I played on a CRT with an emulator and the n64 blur turned off. So no n64 vaseline. The textures are definitely way worse than dreamcast but the darker parts of the game help hide that

I doubt it's ray tracing. Even SSR. They probably just mirror the final image and emplace it over the puddles. With fixed camera angles it's easy to make sure you wouldn't need to do ray traces like SSR does.

Conker looks good and runs okay on N64 because it came out after Banjo Tooie. Tooie uses all the same hardware tricks, but was considerably more ambitious and overtaxes the hardware to a degree, so they knew what they needed to dial back on.

It is interesting how Rare tried to implement 'fur shadder' effects into their games at that point in time. Star Fox Adventures being the first to implement such an effect in real time. I always thought the effect looked really good for console gen 6 era visuals. I don;t see many games that try to implement an effect like this.

2000s Ubisoft was the best in the business when it came to graphics and consistency. Other studios might have had better artists, but Ubisoft was the best when it came to squeezing performance out of the hardware consistently.
The only other real contender at the time was Valve getting HL2's physics to run on the OG xbox, but they spent years building up to that while Ubisoft was consistently releasing crazy shit year over year.

The NES's PPU had no functions to just draw single pixels, lines, or ability to rotate images other than flipping them completely horizontally or vertically.

The devs of Elite didn't care after having already crammed eight star systems with 256 stars each into 20KB of space on the original BBC Micro version of the game.

No idea, but I would not be surprised if that was the case, it was a thing for some other software in the past, even for current homebrew. IIRC that Overdrive 2 demoscene only works properly on PAL (A LOT of people miss that "No Borders" effect when running it on emulators that are less accurate or in NTSC mode) and that Commodore64 port of Sonic runs slow on an NTSC C64 (though it can run full speed on a C128).

From what I understand they were basically rendering all of the graphics in software on the CPU, so without a co-processor or something on the cart it's possible the NES can't handle the game at anything faster. Though I think the way the NES worked was that the PAL systems had the CPU actually run slightly slower (Though the PPU had to update slightly less often per CPU cycle), so maybe it would have been possible on NTSC anyway.

I am not sure how Rare was achieving the fur effects in Star Fox Adventures and Conquer Live and Reloaded. It looks almost like a voxel effect, but it may be tiny sprites stacked in a row. The lower resolution of a CRT TV screen should have also blurred the fur effect to make it look softer. It is a good effect. Looks better than the weird feather-fur seen in Donkey Kong Bananza. Rareware did it better on older hardware.

>It looks like many small semi-translucent 2d textures layered on top of each other.

Yeah, I think so too. I think the Donkey Kong Bonanza model uses the same effects. I still remember being impressed by the fur effect in Star Fox Adventures when I saw it for the first time. I think it is a good looking game overall. Rare has been using fur shaders in their Donkey Kong promotional renders since Diddy's Kong Quest. It was neat seeing this effect in real-time.

Case in point, you can only see high level concepts.
Anonymous No.11861753 [Report]

I think the bananza model doesn't use that technique actually. At least in the sense that the little sprites aren't translucent. They slap a lot of rim lighting on donkey kong and make him semi-reflective like he's made of plastic or wet or something.

>what colours should you be looking at
More warm hues, like red or orange, coming off those fire particles. Sparks should give off different hues other than just plain stark white, as well. The environment is another boring "Rareware Industrial Shit Zone™" which they overwhelmingly cram into every single one of their games, and it looks uglier than a sewer level.
Literally any other example from Conker besides that slum of rusty iron shit in the webm would probably look better, yet I'm bewildered because everyone is slurping it up like it's the most delicious looking N64 game ever made from that one example. It looks worse than DK64's Jungle Japes for G*d's sake.
