Was it a proto-Metroidvania?

I think it speaks to the low quality of the Gameboy and it's games when some people defend those first two turtles games when I think they're unplayable garbage.
Anonymous No.11857605
It's a side-scrolling Zeldroid, obviously

As a zoomer I too prefer to interpret other people's basic grasp of the linear nature of time as flawed critical thinking

the Turtles should only be drawn like this; sinuous almost painful-looking muscles with furiously gritted teeth and anger

The turtles were mostly drawn like this only in Konami box art, anon. This was their go-to guy for Westernized covers, famous for his particular brand of safe-for-all-audiences grit. He later specialized in Christian religious art lmao

I like his stuff well enough but TMNT works best either as openly cartoony or as more restrained "serious" styles like the stuff from the original comics that they used for earlier releases

Just invest a fraction of the effort you're using for entrenched stupidity into minimal fact checking of both what you replied to and what you replied with.

It's on topic! Consider it a metroidvania-style thought experiment where you backtrack and unlock the ability to not make a (complete) ass of yourself.

Not that interested in buzzwords but, out of curiosity, does a "metroidvania" need to have been released after SotN to be considered one? Because if not, this game IS a metroidvania, no "proto" prefix needed.

Metroidvania means Metroid + Castlevania, the later referring to the RPG elements brought to the formula. Metroid is not a Metroidvania, because it doesn't the vania. TMNT3 even less so.

Not really, the term as it's commonly used doesn't describe a blend of two distinct gameplay elements, just the titles of two of its foundational franchises.

And they absolutely don't need RPG-style stats to count as Metroidvanias; simple ability and/or life upgrades tend to qualify (and RR includes both)

Wasn't this the very last TMNT game based on the cartoon to be released (until Shredder's Revenge decades later)? Because if so, then giving Shredder his final boss music from the original arcade game was a nice touch. Makes it feel like a final farewell.

I think the Shredder theme was used in all the beat em ups. It’s called Tetsujin which means β€œIron Man” (badass).
As far as the last game it’s either this or the Tournament Fighters games.

You didn't even name anyone anon and you think foundational turtles art is japanese and done by one person. Go back

I've played them all. Shredder gets a different theme each game. Only the theme from the first arcade game got a straight reprise in Radical Rescue.

Ah ok. I think TMNT 3, Turtles in Time and Hyperstone Heist share a Shredder theme then.

I believe NES Tournament Fighters was.

The Tournament Fighters games were more or less a celebration of the franchise as a whole up to that point (Mirage, Archie, 87 Cartoon, Playmates Toys, and Movie (Aska is supposed to be Mitsu from III)), so it kinda fits.

You're a fucking moron if you think they're even comparable. Fall of the Foot Clan is a nice little game, really too short and easy for its own good but an enjoyable time. Back from the Sewers on the other hand is dogshit. Extremely awkward animations and hitboxes, ramped up difficulty consists on endless enemy spam that makes the game virtually unplayable on the highest difficulty, the beat em up sections feel fucking awful to play.

Fall of the Foot Clan: 6/10
Back from the Sewers: 3/10
Radical Rescue: 7/10
