this game is a lot harder (and spookier) than I expected. Im starting my file over again as i didnt realize you get no fucking ammo in this game and Im already screwed, i have nothing but my knife. am I supposed to just run past everything? use my knife? aim for headshots? why do some zombies respawn and others dont, is there a way to know? I end up getting fucked when I try all of those strategies. is the game easier for first timers with chris? I always go for the waifu choice.

the note from the groundskeeper was kino and I enjoy the 90s VA. discuss re1 ps1 edition.

Chris is hard/normal and Jill is easy mode. Jill gets a new weapon and several puzzles are optional. Chris is the real experience.

The only tip I'll give is that the first Bravo team member getting chomped on can net a whopping 30 rounds if you go search him immediately. If you don't the zombie eats the whole body, and presumably destroys the rounds. An extra 30 roudns really helps.

Search around more. The game does give you a lot of ammo, but you need to find it

The game gives you tons of ammo and the knife is almost as strong as the handgun, what the hell are you doing?

You're supposed to think strategically about when and where you will kill monsters. Its a game of risk management and fretting about resources. It's really great the first time through if you understand that's what the game is. It also holds up on repeat plays as you come up with new approaches.

I'm going to recommend going with Chris even as a first time player. His adventure is better as he does not get bailed out by NPCs or good luck, and consequentially has fewer cutscenes. His mission is lonelier and more atmospheric.

That's actually terrifying. Imagine a virus that turns people into Styrofoam while still being functional. Or even just a monster made of Styrofoam that's alive, like some kind of abomination of cheep 50s scifi movies. You laugh and point as it slowly moves towards you and you think "it's just Styrofoam... Lol wtf, how could a styrofoam monster be living. Fucking weird." Then it starts eating your flesh and you scream and start bashing it's styrofoam brains and you notice your hand becoming styrofoam.

Play the Gamecube Remake, there is NO reason to play the PS1 version, regardless of it being directors cut, dual shock, or the nintendo DS version. The remake is better in. every. single. way. This isn't like other remakes where they add nu things to ruin the classic experience. The remake just just 1 but with better voice acting, graphics, atmosphere, music...everything. Just everything is better.
Anonymous No.11863160 [Report]

Nah. I prefer the tacky 1960s mansion vibe, creates a more surreal atmosphere. The remake mansion is very "haunted mansion"-esque that changes the whole paradigm. I never really thought too much about it until my last playthrough. I definitely enjoy the original over the remake.

Chris can actually absorb more damage, so while Jill's scenario was traditionally considered to be easier, Chris might feel easier depending upon what you're struggling with as a first time player.

I didn't find it very hard but I also played them out of order(2, 3, then 1) so going in everything was already very familiar

For sure. RE1 iMo is the spookiest of the PS1 Resident Evils. Silent Hill absolutely mogs the RE series in that department tho

rebecca death is fucking toned down in the remake, both gore and acting-wise. she is really panicking in the og, trying to run but realized she is cornered, in the remake is just an anti-climatic quick almost generic death

In case you dont know:
Use the shotgun by pointing it up. It can blow zombies heads.
Right when you start, go through the left side of the second floor and follow the path until you run into Rebecca. Ask her to remain there. She will be able to give you a full heal 3 times.
Try to master the knife. Generally speaking you hit once, backtrack a few steps and knife again. If the zombie is near and you missed the knifing DONT try it again, backtrack and try again or you will be bitten.
Dont waste bullets on the dogs. Shoot once and then get close and knife it. Dont waste bullets unless there are other dogs.
Dont be afraid to save often. Game is actually very generous with saves. So dont be afraid to say clear a room or 2 of zombies and save.
DO NOT leave a room until an enemy bleeds. If it is bleeding on the floor its dead otherwise its alive and will respawn with full health.
If you can avoid enemies do it. Typically just kill the ones that will get in your way like hallways with a single road.
Play as Jill if needed and you can play as Chris in NG+.

They haven't made a game like RE1-3/SH1-3 in a long time, so I'll try to explain the basic idea.
You are not trying to kill everything, you are not even trying to kill most things, as you have experienced often-times if you do kill enemies, some other locked door halfway across the mansion will respawn them when you walk through it. I think RE1 is kinda nice about this and only restocks the enemies once you leave the mansion and come back a few hours into the game, but 2 and 3 and the Silent Hill games will absolutely respawn enemies on you for no reason.

Your logic when you go into a room should be this:
>try to identify and count all the enemies
>determine which ones you can just walk past/juke with terrain
>determine which ones are mandatory kills to get past
>kill the enemies you need to kill
Knowing what gun to use on which enemy is important too. Never use the shotgun when fighting one zombie, but when fighting multiple, use the shotgun and aim up for a 1-shot headshot. Enemies aren't dead until they bleed out, and the "kick the enemy to death" animtion isn't as consistent in RE1 as it is in the later games/Silent Hill, so when an enemy falls down, if they don't bleed out, switch to knife and stab the fuck out of them until they do.

Enjoy your time with it OP. RE1 and Tomb Raider were THE KILLER APPS for 3D and PS1 in 1996 (and Saturn too, they just didn't kill anything over there.) Shit was groundbreaking, even more than Quake and Mario 64.

Beginning is hardest. By mid game for re 1-3, you just have so much health and ammo piled up that it becomes easier.

how the fuck can you count enemies you cant watch in prerendered zones?
>determine which ones you can just walk past/juke with terrain
again
>determine which ones are mandatory kills to get past
again. you have no idea where to go, how the fuck you know you have to get past that zombie to go to that door or corner only to find nothing or be locked?
>kill the enemies you need to kill
6 enemies, narrow corridor. you dont just fucking shoot that one enemy, the other 5 get in the way

again

I never understood this meme, I have never ran out of ammo in any RE game except the first time I played CV.
You are given plenty of ammo in these games I don't know what you are doing to waste all of it. Both as Chris and Jill you get buckets of bullets and I believe Chris gets enough to theoretically kill every non-respawning enemy in the game. Jill might but idk I rarely play as her.

re1 is only hard if you're going for bonus objectives like getting the stars guy the antidote or playing for a high rank. if you just want to get to credits it's not very difficult. dont waste ammo on zombies that aren't a likely threat and don't do pointless inefficient saves. worst case you'll need to do a few runbacks and you'll get your head lopped off by hunters a few times.

I really miss games where enemies were simply that an enemy, an obstacle between you and the goal. something there to oppose you. not a checklist task, not a resource pinata you're obligated to engage with.

I dunno back when I played RE games I would make it my mission to kill all the zombies, I didn't take into account whether they would drop any "loot" I just felt it was my mission to kill all the enemies. Running from enemies or "juking" them always felt inherently wrong to me.

Easy: play the director cut version(the "normal" director cut version only, NEVER play the director "dual shock" version because that one has horrible music).

Now, when playing the "normal" director cut version put either the game on easy mode or in the difficulty select screen use the cheat that turns the words to green color to get double ammo in expert mode.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbQ2N5JPWik

Now, after you either choose the easy mode or used the cheat in expert modem, have a nice hunting.
