PC version with the rebirth mod.

PS1 longbox version because it's challenging and therefore more tense. I find the original Japanese version and all of the other ones to be significantly easier

Patched MediaKite version. It's uncensored, has door skip, fast screen transitions and you can enable quick turn, which would otherwise be the only real advantage the NDS version has over the others.

It really isn't. It's not even in the top 10 bestselling PS1 games. Famous, sure. One of THE most famous? No. Super Mario World, Myst, Final Fantasy, Goldeneye, Banjo Kazooie, Tekken, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Sonic, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, NBA Jam, Pac Man, Frogger, Tetris, and Legend of Zelda all take precedent over it. Resident Evil is like a tier 2 famous game, while all the ones I mentioned are essentially Tier 1.

The US version uses the longbox difficulty too which makes it a decent challenge

Remember Ourbreak had unlockable costumes like Bunny girl, for Cindy PE uniform for Yoko or Ada's clothes for Alyssa.
They wouldn't allow that at all. No current gen Ashley panties either. Dont think they even had her full cleavage alternate outfit.

The DS version is casualized too, even if you play on "classic" mode you have the 180° turn and the quick knife at all times, the zombies and Hunters have different AI and the Hunters were made a lot easier (with the shotgun you can just hold the shooting button and you'll automatically shoot them again as they get up)
As for the revamped DS mode, the new puzzles are literal toddler tier (insert square shaped object in square shaped hole...) and the first person knife fights are shit (spam diagonal to win... works every time.)

as for the new 3D models I think they're more miss than hit

Don't get me wrong, back when it came out I was glad this version existed. I was at my first year in college and I had no internet connection and only a shitty laptop and a DS, I did many playthroughs. But saying it's RE1 is like saying those GBA versions of Final Fantasy 1-2 are FF1-2.

When you open a ingame text document(a note, diary, etc) the japanese original has a unique background image for each of them depicting what that document actually looks like instead of the pure black screen with white text from the international versions

that's the whole reason to play this version imo, it plays better. And rebirth mode isn't retro and definitely not factoring into my assessment, I don't disagree with your points on that.
