It filtered out bad developers (mostly westoids). Silent Hill 2, MGS2, God of War all had effects that couldn't be replicated on lesser hardware.

There's a reason Shadow of the Colossus is the only game of its kind. Only the PS2 hardware had the technology needed to create such a complex game.
Therefore, the PS2 is hated because people know, deep down in the conscience, that the PS2 is the most powerful console of the 6th generation.

MGS2 rain effects looked much better on the PS2 than on the "more" powerful Xbox, same with Silent Hill 2 fog.

It's called Emotion Engine. No other hardware was capable of creating such realistic face animations in real time (not CG).

I thought its graphics looked so old especially in the mid-2000s. With jaggies and blurriness. Especially when you look at what was possible on Xbox and GC. On the other hand the effects it could do are cool and that it had such a longevity, it's spans an era. When you emulate PS2 games you'll forget that.
