As a kid I never figured out he went away when you threw the key and waited a bit, so every time Phanto appeared was maximum panic for my kid self!
Somehow I feel SMB2 has a sort of "behind the scenes" vibe, like how it has reflector carwheels, and how there's masks and stuff. The newly added backgrounds on the All Stars remake reassured this behind the scenes idea with the new backgrounds for some of the indoor areas.

In general though the games were good enough to warrant Nintendo reskinning it into Mario and passing it off as Mario 2. No easy feat. I like the whale level.

There's a theory floating around the SMB2 is actually a stage play so you might be onto something
