Reposting in the new thread. Any good clamshells models that can run Portmaster decently? Was thinking of grabbing something I can bring to work for breaks. Considered my old Trimui Smart or Smart Pro but I think a Clamshell might be a safer bet for carrying. I do not want to bring anything like my GBA/SP, PSP or Vita where it could get lost/stolen/damaged.

I was planning on getting one, but it being twice as expensive as the Deck is a no-no. It's silly how these companies keep putting out budget handhelds but refuse to subsidize them to actually compete with Valve. There's just no reason to not save up some more money and get a Z2E device, which is infinitely stronger.

That is your price range for wanting 6th gen. The RP4, RP5, RPF2, and Ayn Odin 2 are what you're looking at. It's why it's typically recommended you just save up an extra $100 and get a Steam Deck because at that point you're in the price range anyway and get access to way more.

Valve is in the business of selling games. They're in the business of selling hardware. Valve can afford to subsidize their device, they cannot.

A currently unknown entity sued this Italian youtuber for "promoting crimes" (piracy) because he reviewed Anbernic consoles.
He specifically told his audience (at the start of every video) that piracy was wrong and illegal and you need to dump your own roms in order to enjoy the chinese retro-handhelds.

He's now facing jail time and a 15k fine.

Looking to add a 5th member to me collection. Thoughts?

>Anbernic RG280v, silver
I'm on the go, so this is the pefect device for me. Amazing for JRPGs that don't require much trigger use due to their placement on the corners.

>RG351MP, mintgreen
I got it for the metal shell and screen ratio. It has a nice PAWG weight that screams quality; can possibly bash someone's head in with it. Nice buttons, sticks, bumpers, and silicone grip pad on the back. No contest, the best for all PSX and earlier.

>Analogue Pocket, black
Preordered first run, never going back. It may be the black sheep, but nothing is better for original hardware except arguably their source consoles. No input lag, crisp enhanced display, once you add the FPGA cores it's flawless for NeoGeo and earlier. They have a 1080p dock for it also, and all your 8bitdos are compatible with it. There's a grip installment now too. It's made by two whiteboys in Seattle, not children in Taiwan for $4 an hour.

>Retroid Pocket 2, gameboy colors
It introduced me to the chinkheld market, so it holds a dear place in my heart. It may not have aged like wine, but it served me well and for years. Despite being older it can emulate N64 better than the aforesaid Anbernics, which makes no sense to me.

>Steamdeck OLED, black
Sex in your hands. Feels good. Incredible for emulaying PS2 and earlier, runs most Steam games except those you need a crazy PC for, runs PC games and is literally a Linux computer in desktop mode. Very moddable inside and out. Just like the Analogue, if you want quality I suggest you buy American.

>PSP 2000, white with Vader (Battlefront edition)
Honorable mention. My first true love.

clamshell is the only form factor that isnt listed so probably that. budget options are the anbernic or miyoo SP clones. otherwise retroid pocket flip 2 for a ds-sized clamshell that can play up to ps2 and light switch games.
either that or upgrade from your rg280v to a better speced budget vertical. if you want to keep the screen under 3 inches the gkd pixel or miyoo mini v4 are probably good options, but for verticals in general the trimui brick or the batlexp g350 probably the best budget option if you don't mind getting something bigger. i dont think you need any more horizontals lol.

>Press start when at the console listings, not in the games.
>Scraper -> Scraper Settings -> Bottom to log in.
>Scraper Settings also lets you select how you want them viewed.
>Back out to Scraper and then choose whatever you want on that page and then at the bottom hit "Scrape now".
It by default only grabs from one source which is your choosing. Screenscraper is the best choice, TheGamesDB is only good for things like romhacks or translation patches. Once the scraping is done go back to the main menu and go to "Game Settings" and then "Update Gamelists". Anything it couldn't find will be the filename you had it at.

If you want to manually scrape something then go to a game, hold A on it, scroll to the bottom, and click "Scrape". The manual scrape scrapes all three sources. If it still isn't showing then go to "Input" at the bottom after you enter the "Scrape" menu and mess around with the name to try and get it to find something. Romhacks are the hardest to find any listings for and they usually default to the source of the romhack.

A Kingston 1GB was the only MicroSD card I've ever had properly fail on me. Outside of that the only other SD card I've had fail was the Vita's 1GB or 2GB proprietary one and only in a weird way with it having issues if left unpowered for a few years (I couldn't really backup saves or screenshots without it throwing errors at me unless I did them individually) at which point I was forced to format it. It still works today though after the format I did like five years ago?

Now, if we're talking HDDs Seagate can rot in a pit. Five HDDs from them have all died within a year of owning them ranging from their higher end externals to their normal HDDs. A brand new external of mine died literally as I was moving files to it getting rid of like 3 or 4 years of documents and pictures. My parents would get them for me when I was younger brand new and I lost so much data because of them specifically. The only one that ever survived for me was a 40 GB from my PS3 which lasted over 10 years before I replaced it of my own volition, not because it was failing.
I refuse to trust them and have stuck with WD ever since with not a single HDD dying in like 15 years now. I primarily only have blues in my computer and bought their 2TB SSD as well which also has no issues for over like two years now. I've only ever had to replace them because they were actually just getting so old CrystalDiskInfo started showing there were genuine write errors starting to appear on the disk so I should replace it.

As with any compressed format, it will have to be decompressed on the fly, which requires more power, time and adds more heat. Besides, should you want to apply an undub/translation patch or a mod, you'll have to decompress CHD because no patcher will ever support it. As a rule of thumb, Generally speaking, I'd say don't bother unless you get a good compression ratio, at least 80% for example.

Also, certain versions of retroarch on these Linux devices don't seem to allow you to switch disks with pbp without creating the cue file. You can switch disc's with chd, you just use the file browser. put all the disc's in a per-game folder and you won't have to scroll.

It's kind of overrated and underrated. Redditors and YouTube shills will glaze it for its CFW and say other dumb shit like "the coziest comfiest handheld for retro blasting", but I don't think the hate it gets is really justified either. It's a system that got a lot right at the time when there was so much slop on the market, it's <$50 and sometimes could be had for ~$30 with AliExpress coupons and sales, and it's for that reason it's still a top seller years down the line and has matured since then with community support. I still think it has the best feeling buttons and dpad among handhelds I have in the same budget category, and OnionOS is pretty nice (though I use MinUI nowadays). The triggers on the Miyoo Mini specifically are pretty bad, but they are a lot better on the Miyoo Mini Plus at the cost of being a bigger device.
However, I will agree there are handhelds now that can do a lot of things better for the same price range, and you should consider getting those unless there's something you specifically like about the Miyoo devices. If you want something that's a similar size or some other micro device, I honestly think the Miyoo Mini is still the best option as similar small options like the GKD Pixel don't really do much better and cost more. If you just want a good vertical handheld with a 3.5" screen or less, the TrimUI Brick is the best option for something just slightly bigger than the Miyoo Mini. If form factor isn't a consideration, just pick something and compare it to the Miyoo Mini and it will probably be better.

It's slightly larger than an SP and the buttons are clicky. Like the others said there's an issue with dome piercing on the ABXY buttons and the d-pad. The revision fixed this on the ABXY buttons but not the d-pad so if you want to make sure it doesn't happen you need to 3D print some washers and then open up the SP and put them on the silicone membranes. You can find more about that:
https://imoskvin.com/blog/rg35xxsp-button-mod/

Stores still have old revision stock so if you want to guarantee a new revision you need to buy transparent white, transparent red, or transparent green.
Transparent blue, transparent black, OG silver, and SNES all have a chance to be old revision so you're rolling a dice on if the store has old or new revisions of those and what they will send to you.

I'd fully expect them to make an "RG34XX-SP Mini" to copy Miyoo since they removed their sticks as well and the #1 complaint about the RG34XX-SP is that it has sticks. The #2 complaint is the awful tapering for the screen which they could also probably fix.

>anyone that wanted it to be a perfect replica for gba games is retarded
The entire point is that it's a nostalgia device which is why it's in that shape in the first place. It being able to play more systems isn't the draw because the focus is specifically to play GBA games like a real SP without the limitations of an SP. That's why the 34XX is so appealing in general: It's literally just a GBA with more buttons. I do agree with you that the bezel does make it feel more "authentic" and I think going down in size is actually worse in terms of adult hands. I think the RG35XX-SP is the best implementation of the SP model so far.

And I don't want it to be anything other than a GBA. Games are more enjoyable when you play them on a device that excels at being what it is, not a

Well, in the 40's case it's more convenient and not exactly a crazy high price in addition to being a dedicated device. In an ideal world we'll see a Linux-based one for better performance and with a slightly better chip. I'm wondering if the Knulli team is going to bother supporting the 40 since the firmware is handled on the external SD card in addition to the fact that the chipset already has support by them in the 28 and the Trimui systems.

The whole thing is hacked together from the crappy proprietary stock launcher because of this bullshit "good enough" mentality, as a result the settings and apps menus make no fucking sense, and sometimes you get crashes and can't fix the bugs causing them.

I have both the Flip and Brick and honestly I'm a bit disappointed by the Flip V2 build quality aside. The CFW for it is pretty underwhelming at the moment coming from the MM+ and TrimUI's options, and I've overestimated the usefulness of having a clamshell form factor and the sticks. I really want to like it though as I think aside from the hinge issue it has better buttons than the Anbernic ones and it doesn't have a GBA-specific aspect ratio. I'm tempted to just return it or put it on a shelf for a while until the CFW improves it. Literally never even heard of this site. They seem to have a 1 year repair and replacement policy though, so I wouldn't really worry about it. By the time that warranty runs out, the CubeXX would probably become cheap enough to just buy a new one instead of paying for replacement parts.
Also, if you're going to become a handheld slopsoomer like the rest of us retards, you should try to familiarize yourself with AliExpress, because it's gonna be the cheapest place to get handhelds generally. The base prices are typically about the same as the MSRP on the official handheld sites, but the shipping is usually free, they always have like a million coupons, and you can sometimes stack them with their weird virtual coins on the app. It has a reputation for sketchy shit and long shipping, but everything I ever ordered arrived in 2 weeks at most, and you should be fine if the vendor has a good rating and reviews for the product.

In general the transparent models have to potential for the plastic to be more brittle than anything that uses solid plastic. I personally have a transparent white RG35XX-SP which had the plastic screw posts completely disintegrate on me when I went to open it up to do the button mod making it borderline unusable as a system but then the new one I got (Same color) has been just fine even opening it up and my Glacier RG34XX has also been fine doing the tape mod I mentioned earlier. If plastic quality or durability bothers you then just go for the solid models but that usually means sticking with an SNES, Famicom, or GameCube control scheme.

>Even on the ones that are upwards of 50$?
Even $100 systems come with completely unusable SD cards. MagicX is like the only one I've seen who actually intentionally goes for legit Samsung and Kioxia cards and there was a very short period of time where Anbernic got a stock of Kioxia cards that they've since stopped providing. Never ever use the included SD cards unless they say Kioxia on them and even then you should wipe the whole thing and start anew.

The SD cards are typically faulty rejects of the proper manufacturers so their lifespan is limited, they're prone to corrupting random parts of the card, and they're prone to simply dying at random out of nowhere. It's never worth it to waste your time on them, they're e-waste used as a selling point for people who are technologically illiterate.
>Everything I looked at worked, but of course we only clicked on a tiny amount of what was listed
When they advertise the "20,000 games on the card" what that means is you're getting every single possible region variant of that game, any budget release variant, pirated Chinese romhacks of popular games, and duplicates of the game in every single system it was available on including knockoffs and Chinese pirated ports of them so that they can pad the list out as much as possible. In addition to this nowadays they're not including Nintendo games out of fear of lawsuits since they sell the systems on western storefronts or through western vendors.

You're also not getting the "official" dumps of the games. It's usually random garbage that has been floating around for years on random surface level rom sites that won't match any known CRC hash which could potentially lead to in-game issues, crashes, or corruption of saves and make it incompatible with real systems.

Always go for the lowest value SD card (Or even better, no SD card) because it's destined for the trash as soon as you get it. Unless you don't know how Google works you are paying money for nothing.

Unless it's explicitly stated that it uses a name brand card like SanDisk or something, generally yes. Don't get me wrong, the SD card will probably at least work and you could get by with it for a while if you were desperate enough. I just wouldn't expect it to last very long without corrupting your data, and some ROMs might be missing. I know Mario and other first-party Nintendo titles are often missing on these cards due to Anbernic and other companies not wanting to get their ninjas on their ass as an example.
>SF3000
These are kind of dogshit honestly. I'm not sure where you're getting S_way from, the company that actually makes them is called DataFrog, and their handhelds even struggle with more demanding SNES games. They also don't make Miyoo devices. $30 is not really even that competitive considering you can buy a horizontal handheld like the Anbernic RG35XXH or TrimUI Smart Pro that can play up to PS1 games perfectly with some N64 and Dreamcast too for only like $50-$60.
If you want my advice, if you're looking for a PSP form factor similar to the SF3000 you posted with a nice quality wide screen for <$60, return or cancel the RG CubeXX order and get a TrimUI Smart Pro off AliExpress with coupons. Pic related is how much it costs me in the US. Then get a 64-256GB microSD from a good brand like SanDisk and a microSD to USB reader if you need one to hook up to your computer to download ROMs and custom firmware if you want to install it.
>What is the situation with Anbernic in general?
Anbernic is fine. They make dozens of handhelds that mostly do the same shit in different form factors and performance tiers, but they all generally work well. If you're really curious about different devices and brands, I'd try to compare the specs and features you want on a handheld on a site like RetroCatalog, and also just lurk moar.

They can also be pre-patched with cheat codes or trainers, ruining the experience.

Well, if you haven't cancelled it yet the Cube is still a solid system overall and I believe it's one of the models of Anbernic systems that comes with a Kioxia SD cards. All you would really need to do at this point is go to Amazon and buy a 128-256 GB micro SD card from a reputable brand (Which are beyond cheap at this point, two 128s is like $15-$18?) and then simply source your own roms either through things like the Tiny Best Set or just actually source them in general.

That's a good reccomendation, but I'm going to stick with the CubeXX
The smart pro has slightly better internal specs than the CubeXX it seems
The battery is 5000 mAh compared to the cubes 3800mah, CPU and GPU are a bit better too
I think overall as a pure handheld it probably is slightly better

But the Cubexx can cast to TVs or video out with a cable to a TV or monitor
It can receive casting from a PC so you can play a PC game on it while you're sick in bed or in the garden or something
This guy in pic related is using his PC and Cubexx together multi screen for 3ds games

I could take this thing to work and play Street Fighter on a wall mounted TV in the break room
Or take it to a friends or relatives place and quickly stream to TV
It has a square screen which is good for different aspect ratios too when actually using it as a handheld

>I'm going to stick with the CubeXX
That's fair, both are good options and play the same games. I just wasn't sure if you wanted something cheaper and in a similar aspect ratio to the SF3000 you saw. Nintendo can try, but they probably canโ€™t. Itโ€™s probably nigh impossible for foreign companies to try suing certain entities in China, and what would be stopping Anbernic from feigning bankruptcy and then reopening under a new name? I donโ€™t think Nintendo can easily sue AliExpress listings either, shoot one down and another 10 will grow in their place. If you can get over that, it's better than the cube xx, but I just don't know if it's worth it when all the extra power is good for is making sure GBA audio doesn't crackle. Notice how the Mini requires no extra grip due to analogue placement? Something we all know, yet always seems to get monkey's pawed. We're constantly being told not to expect perfection. That past times when they get a quality or detail right they cannot repeat it in future models. I could attempt to steer design choices and ideas, like many before me have here. But I wonder what the point would be? They listen, until their business decision strips us once again of our current endgame design. We all have what we individually are after design wise. All they'd need to do would be to provide replacement parts, update the OS' and upgrade the chips every year. Just make a perfect quality device.
The AI aided one I drew leaned toward the idea that future ultra wide screens could still have a foot in the field of retro. A 4:3 as second screen would keep the black bar crowd happy while the top 7:3 screen could also house perfectly a 4:3 alongside a 1:1 display. Also, wider screens and longer units have so many benefits. Port access, more space for internals more batteries, ergonomics, extra buttons/ controls.

I don't understand this mentality. Why is it that you think cheating in an emulator is somehow more valid than cheating on original hardware?

Not the same guy, but it's a pretty simple view
>Why is it that you think cheating in an emulator is somehow more valid than cheating on original hardware?
>Alternatively, what is it about emulation that makes you think it's inherently incompatible with the intended gameplay experience?
Because a free cracked game on an emulator is already a far deviation from the original game and hardware, it's inherently a form of cheating and stealing, and it's an unorthodox and creative workaround
You are several steps away from the intended gameplay experience already, so now that we are down the path of modified software and hardware it makes sense that those that are able and interested would further modify the games. The original hardware was limited by miniscule processing power and small size memory, so now that the hardware specs are gigantically better there is freedom to add colour or extra game elements

If you put the real original cartridge in the original console it wouldn't have these thing
But you are playing an emulation, so who gives a shit

Clearly not
The emulator program is a completely new software, so is the OS on whatever handheld you have
The PC you use to download and install these things, you and the others in the community that provided them, all the software involved at every stage, the internet servers, your modern windows OS, your browser perhaps a torrent client and zip program, you used all of that to get hold of the games
>>it's inherently a form of cheating

The games cost money originally - free hacks are theft, you cheated to get them
>>now that we are down the path of modified software and hardware
>Again, the software is 1:1 unless you go out of your way to change it. The same goes for the hardware being emulated; anything other than stock is an option you choose to enable.
A PC is not the original hardware
Playing the Japanese game on custom handheld hardware from a different Chinese company is a total deviation from the original experience, not 'stock'
>>now that the hardware specs are gigantically better
>That's not how emulators work.
What does that even mean as a sentence?
The original gameboy had an 4mhz CPU, they were severely limited with hardware
Google says - Cartridges for the original Game Boy range from 32k to up to 512k in size, while standard sizes for Game Boy Color cartridges are between 1MB and 4MB
Kirbys Dreamland 2 came out on the original gameboy when hardware was microscopic
If adding colour to games is so bad then why did Nintendo create a colour Gameboy and colour games when they had greater capacity of cartridges?

So it looks suspicious. How can they can offer that hardware at that price? More powerful than the Trimui smart pro, Anbenric Cubexx, or the powkiddy rgb30 which are equivalent in price

Those specs are 60 dollar range anyway. The e6 max has the same chip and also around that price. The reason anbernic sells their h700 stuff that high is because they can get away with it. Powkiddy only still sells the rgb30 for that much because they consider it a novelty device in the first place. New/Lesser companies also have to stay competitive with telescopic controllers as those are getting better by the second. The rgb50 also wants to sell at that price range to do well, but it seems powkiddy doesn't like the a527 as much as they thought.

The device is also not registered to the included google play store
There is a menu button for the OS that works in game as a double function pause button + quit game button, the reviewer felt the need to mention his dislike of that

Seems like there's a trend for devices offering high level inner hardware at their price point, that they have poor outer hardware, design, and QC

This thing is just horrible and pointless
The reviewer says it's a bit uncomfortable to hold in every position
5,600 mAh battery - Just under 2 hours gameplay for God of War 2 on the PS2
He said he couldn't get the touch screen to work properly on both screens, for DS and 3DS - He thinks it might be due to Android trying to emulate Nintendo business
It's memes on top of memes for $600, if you want to play 3DS games that badly you could go buy a 3DS and still have enough left over for a Nintendo Switch and a Retroid Pocket 5

Despite all the clever transformation folding the screens can't be angled towards you when playing, which is the only folding option you need. If they had just made it a normal clamshell they could have used the space better and put a bigger battery in it, and still had 2 screens that you could lean forward to deal with glare
It's got a bunch of hinges for breaking
on top of that IT HAS NO HEADPHONE JACK

Anonymous No.11886371 >>11886424

And on the topic of the ad
They put a white girl and a black boy in the ad as a couple, so this is copying recent western multicultural advertising in a hamfisted way, especially American
They want westerners to get hyped and buy this thing like it's a polished international operation, but they're making retro handhelds that play pirate software

With the build they are doing a clumsy attempt at the Nintendo strategy of developing fun, novel, and creative platforms like you get with the 2 screens of the DS, the detaching controllers of the Switch, they're aiming at a sort of Nintendo mix up where they do something unexpected and change the scene
But they're also going for the Android functionality too, and sort of like a two screen PC - You can Youtube on one screen and play a game on the other

So it's like a Retro Handheld Nintendo Phone PC but it doesn't fully succeed to complete one of the lanes properly
They've tried to go super high effort and polished but it's just too messy in the end
It has two different power buttons, and two different volume controls, due to the folding pieces covering them up - but they didn't put a headphone jack on it
This thing is really fucked up

Yeah like other anon said, I play drastic and I've never had that happen.

Lower end PS2 like that could probably play well even on a RP2S. I had Soul Nomad running perfectly on 405M which was mostly comparable and it drained battery about as fast as a PS1 game. That's just a rough estimate though, maybe one of the review videos would have better insight.

Is there a need to make a Linux boot card for RP5 or has android emulation reached a point where it can handle most everything PS2 and below?

The emulators are still out of date on Android compared to Linux, especially with regards to things like PS2. It's better to jump through the hoops to deal with Linux than to be lazy and deal with Android. It doesn't mean it can't play it, it just means that performance won't be the best you can get and you'll have issues that were fixed months if not years ago on Android you don't have on Linux.

What emulator do you use for Switch games on ARM Linux?

Android is good enough for me, the only thing I'd put linux on my flop 2 for is xbox. I had good taste when I was a teen so I never got to try most xbox exclusives.

There's exceptions, obviously. I'm speaking more in general. Switch would require Android but generally it's better to stick to Linux if possible.

So... has anyone jailbroken the PS Portal yet? Can I play PS1 on this thing somehow?

isn't it just a screen with a controller?

Supposedly for a small period of time it was able to be hacked to play PPSSPP on it but I don't know what the performance was on it at all.

It's essentially an official DualSense controller with a screen glued onto it, and the DualSense itself is in my opinion the best official first-party controller with the only flaw being the d-pad. If they made it with the Vita d-pad it would be perfect. So having something that can emulate games with an official DualSense controller instead of these weird Chinese takes on them would be a good thing.

Eta prime figured out the touchscreen. Russ confirmed once again as being an idiot.

Wasn't that the retard who came up with the idea of putting a copper heatsink on a battery in his RG35XXSP video?

Can't access those posts you referenced. Can you tell us wth tape it is? Can we get it from chinky-express?
Fuck that tape autist, I was one of many to have asked him months ago.

Any custom firmwares available on the RG35XX Pro already? The stock OS feels like total shit.

Second guy said it could be PTFE teflon tape which is what I went with and it looks close enough. I got it for about $5 off of Amazon. If you want the exact listing I bought:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09GP39Q6B

Like I said in the post you quoted though, don't go fully half way into the button. I can do that thing in Pokemon where if you tap the button you pivot in place instead of moving way more than I feel is normal and sometimes the menuing feels "off" with the inputs not always registering. I think if I just pull the tape back a tiny bit back it would get rid of that issue entirely.
