What the fuck were they thinking when deciding to have one of the coolest characters getting killed off in the first game?

Kojima wasn't planning on making more sequels initially. Also imagine being outraged at a villain dying.

The game has a huge ass sequel hook at the end
If any game was ever intended to have a sequel from the get go it was this one.

Not really. More like a last-minute plot twist than a set-up for a sequel. Besides, MGS2 pretty much tanked the first game's plot anyway.

The fuck is a "last minute plot twist"
They pretty much say THERE IS ANOTHER VILLAIN, LOOK FORWARD TO HIM IN THE SEQUEL
It can't be more in your face.
>Besides, MGS2 pretty much tanked the first game's plot anyway.
Irrelevant to this argument

And what did he do that was actually villainous? Last I checked, he was the one who cancelled the bombing on the base.

As respectable as it is to avoid milking a franchise, I always felt like there was never enough MGS. The stealth gameplay style of the first two games is really fun, but there's barely any of it, and it's always being interrupted by action and cutscenes. I would've gladly played several more games just in that style, and a couple more in the style of MGS3.

*Hit the button too early, but Solidus only became the bad guy in 2. Before that, it wasn't clear what he had planned beyond getting REX's data and mopping up Liquid's crew.

Bro
There is another fucking Snake, and the only villain who survived the game is in cahoots with him
But nah, Kojima didn't mean anything by this, his perfect vision was finalized, he just wanted to retired to a hut in alaska but woe is him he was forced at gunpoint to make a followup and make another billion dollars and become even more famous in the process, enabling him in the long run the creative freedom he has today, poor guy

I guess the virtual missions are kinda their answer to that. No plot, just sneaking (or using gear)
MGS substance has a shit ton extra missions, I have fond memories of trying to get gold on all of them.

It's a great game but storywise everything about MGS2 except for a couple moments feels like filler, including its main villain. It feels like Ghost Babel (which isn't canon I know) and Portable Ops in terms of importance honestly

Kojima wanted Metal Gear games to be serious and sure there was some unintentionally comical stuff but I seriously don't know what he was thinking with that Liquid Ocelot shit. This is long running shonen tier writing, there's just no way he didn't realise how fucking hilariously dumb this was

He had just read 1984 and wanted to use the concept of doublethink in his plot.
That's his MO, his plots are dictated by whichever movies he had seen or books he had read and liked at the time.

Kojima is a freemason and therefore woke.
In the first game he mentions racism

Second game has gay suggestive scenes

third game he makes the strongest character in the whole series a woman who defects to the USSR

Kojima is a really bad guy. Of course, he's going to have the only blonde character die in the first game.

MGS5 literally had covid 19 propaganda in it "a virus that makes you want to go outside"

Death Stranding had tons of stuff mocking trump

The greatest will to create media comes from jealously. You're so angry at reality that you're willing to create a maze of code and graphics to flip that reality upside-down.

>I'm going to write a compelling, thematically appropriate end for my villain that you face in several life or death struggles instead of a sequel bait contrivance
>WTF WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? ARE YOU INSANE?!!
It's fine enough to think liquid had potential and they maybe could have justified using him again but fuck off if you think a single mainline entry isn't good enough to encapsulate a villain. mgs1's greatness is enough.

Game end with a sequel hook. And they started work on MGS2 during MGS1 development. The super early version of it was shown in the Making of video and still used Snake from MGS1 as a model.

Liquid Snake is kind of a dork compared to Solidus and The Boss. He's got a goofy British accent and his entire motivation is centered on envy for Solid Snake that isn',t even warranted because he did in fact have all of Big Boss's dominant genes while Solid Snake was the throwaway and Ocelot knew didn't tell him because he was secretly working to gather intel for Solidus (who happened to be the president of the United States at the time).
