The game has a lot of merits, it's one of the firsts "cinematic" action games on the system, came out before Ninja Gaiden, and mixing 3 different gameplay styles like this before others did it on the system too. Shame the beat em up sections lack depth but again there weren't that many beat em ups on NES/FC at that point in time yet.
The difficulty increase in the US version is ridiculous indeed, AFAIK it was the first time Konami changed the difficulty for the western audiance so I feel like they didn't have the right formula yet and overshot. If it wasn't for that it'd be remembered as a classic.
I wish there was a romhack that combined the best elements from both the FC and NES versions.
