I'm that Anon who got a RP4P for $50. Turns out it was priced that way cause of a faulty right joystick but a $5 replacement is on the way. Still seems rather worth it. Anyway, this is my first time using an Android handheld console. Is there an app or something that'll automatically incorporate the bezel project, or will I have to manually apply it for each game? Also, I realize 4:3 integer scaled games look rather tiny on this screen, would it be better to just turn it off and apply some fancy shader? I assume this thing has the juice to run some high end shaders compared to one of those RK3326 systems.

Looking for a budget horizontal. I'm torn between the Trimui Smart Pro and the MagicX Mini Zero 28. How is the screen on the MagicX? Big reason I'm considering the TSP is I have a Brick as my vertical option and it has probably the best non-OLED screen, but the aspect ratio is kind of dumb since it only does up to PSX reliably and just makes it larger than it needs to be, which is why I started considering the MagicX. Anything else to consider?

So I have a 3:2 handheld, an 8:7 (or as close as I can reasonably get to it) and a 16:9 handheld. I'm just looking for the best 4:3 handheld that can do PS2/GameCube/Saturn. Yeah, I tried getting PS2 working on my Slide today to very mixed results. Something like Rampage Total Destruction worked fine. I tried Outrun 2006 though, and even with the low settings, things went bad. At first it seemed fine, it was running at 60 FPS, but then partway through Stage 3 the framerate got halved. I think maybe that is the part where the fog rolls in and that's what did it, I'm not sure. Either way, I wouldn't recommend it for PS2 play.

the ips display on something like the brick is really good for a device that can be had for about $40, and there are other devices like the powkiddy rgb30 and some anbernic budget helds that are also nearly there for another $10 or so. the cheapest OLED display i can think of is the retroid pocket classic for $130 before shipping and duties. its not really a big deal for retro games that people put CRT filters on to intentionally make it look like shit anyways, the only reason id spend an extra ~$100 is for the better specs which is useless since no analog sticks and video out.

Back then, IPS screens were the premium option because all cheap screens used TN panels and those had terrible viewing angles and had a duller color output compared to IPS screens which had crisper colors and a decent viewing angle.

Now OLED is the new premium option, and it indeed has better "blacks", but IPS screens are still serviceable in 2025 in my opinion.

Not sure if this is the right thread, but how do you access the service menu for arcade games in retroarch? I'm using the default mame core, but none of the buttons on my RP4P brings it up and I can't seem to find it in the settings either?

When you get the adapter make sure you do not go past 128 GB. 128 GB can have minor loading increases in certain games (I don't even know which, it was just constantly mentioned when I was searching this myself) and the initial boot gets like 1-2 seconds longer because of it. 64 GB is the sweet spot.

Once you actually have the MicroSDs in there and formatted you can never remove them or it corrupts the entire card so fair warning. You have to format the thing or pull the important stuff off if you plan on repurposing them before you physically remove them.

Forwarders don't require rebooting, but a large library is cumbersome to navigate and takes up a significant number of the ~300 title slots you're limited to.
It's crazy that no one ever developed something like TwilightMenu for the GBA hardware, so you need to boot into a dedicated payload every time you want to play a GBA game.

On a small screen they were designed for, You can hardly tell the fucking difference. On an 4" or less screen, dot and grid are very close with dot looking slightly better since it rounds the edges.

Enjoying my RG34XXSP via muOS, my first Anbernic (had the Smart Pro and Mini Plus before).
Wish it had more shaders though the odd resolution likely means there won't be many made for it, it's fine as is though. Screen is definitely too small for some older ScummVM games though (The 7th Guest was extremely difficult to make out for some puzzles) so I'd recommend the RG35XXSP instead in some instances.

i use flip-horizontal to flip the image before applying sameboy-lcd and then image-adjustment to flip it back because sameboy-lcd doesn't do BGR pixel order like a real gba.

The rp5 can pretty much do anything you want for retro gaming and some high end lile certain switch games for 220 dollars. It's got a vita look to it as well and oled screen but there should be cheaper handheld under 100 coming out soon that might be able to do psp very well.
