There's very little of that in any of the two discs, there are minor deviations but all of which are on the basic same path way from Point A to B. Plus most of the FF9 side quests tend to expand multiple discs, the coffee quest for example can be completed as of Disc 3, and you start it after leaving the ice cave in Disc 1. The only two major things you can do for most of FF9 is just Chocobo Hot & Cold along with Tetra Master, otherwise very little side content besides "spend most of the game collecting these"

Friendly monsters too, then you have little side objectives in the instanced areas. I'm playing through it now and when the world opens up to me I'm always sure to deviate. Heck, even if the story gives me a moment I'm not railroaded I explore and will find neat things (hidden treasure, new character interactions, things like that). There are definitely times where it is heavily railroaded though. The infiltration and escape from Alexandria is a big one that lasts a while, but its a lot more open then, say, FF XIII.

I did and "le love letter" meme was a marketing ploy of game magazines, 95% of the 9fags barely played 7 and 8 and most didn't even finished them and simply rolled with the publicity stunt.

I expected to be able to have jobs but instead it had one of the shittiest systems, and oh boy was it also SLOW. The graphics are nice but hardly a callback to the previous games. Why was the world full of weird furries and midgets in cramped shanty towns? The story was more like wizard of oz+DBZ than anything resembling classic FF. Way too much railroading too and wasting time on stupid shit, yet what fans would have actually enjoyed, e. g. fighting the fiends, was gimped down to cutscenes. Ridiculous.

Thats not what I was saying at all you fucking retard. It was literally Sakaguchi's swan song and departure from the franchise, which was the end of both the PS1 era and was followed by a series of wild departures going forward. It was quite literally the last legacy title in the franchise in multiple ways. It doesn't matter if you got filtered by it, but you absolutely did, just like some people did when it came out. Its not a generational thing, you're just fucking stupid.

Being filtered doesn't always mean the game was too hard for you, it also means you're too fucking stupid to understand anything in the game that's not shoved down your throat. People get filtered by not understanding things like subtext or moral/ethical quagmires constantly. Its ok anon, we all learn to appreciate things more as we expand our perspectives.

5 was the last game he directed, while he was the lead writer in 9. It was also his last project before leaving to form his own company and making not-retro titles.
>his "swan song" was The Spirit Within.
You truly were not alive when that movie came out. It was lambasted for not being Final Fantasy constantly at the time, regardless of people giving it a fair shake years later. Swan song doesn't literally mean the last thing you do, it means the highpoint at the end of your career. Spirits within was the death rattle that followed.

Juat beat it last year. Charming game. Funny writing. Zidane is a proper non-mopey hero (except in that one part when he is mopey). Treno is kino. Kuja's desert lair sucks as a level. Quina's enemy skill copy was really fun to use. Tetra Master is dumb. Fantastic music. Annoyed that I missed the secret library boss. Those black sheep were assholes. Overworld was a little restricting. I can see why millennial art hoes loved this game in the 2010s.

>while he was the lead writer in 9
Sakaguchi conceived the base story (aka overall concept, similar to VII's), but didn't write the actual scenario/script used in the game. Kazuhiko Aoki did. Hideo Minaba also created the worldview and setting based off Sakaguchi's initial outline.

>You truly were not alive when that movie came out.
I was but not sure how that changes anything.

>It was lambasted for not being Final Fantasy constantly at the time
Ironically enough. https://shmuplations.com/ffix/
>As for themes, the theme of FF9 is the same as the movie The Spirits Within. Their worlds are completely different, but the core theme is the same. I didn't directly try to make them the same, and there are differences to be sure, but I wrote the scenarios at the same time. The first draft of the story for FF9 was written by me, by the way. Two other people were added to help finish the final draft, and it's very different. The latter half, in particular, changed quite a bit.

Yep. I didn't even say anything negative about its story or theming, just that it was terribly received, even by people who fondly recognized his name. You actually used irony correctly, because it wasn't his:
>Copy and pasted swan song definition from wikipedia pt 1
Here's the rest of that thought since you're a disingenuous shitter:
>The phrase refers to an ancient belief that swans sing a beautiful song just before their death while they have been silent (or alternatively not so musical) for most of their lifetime.
Its used to point out a plateau shortly before retirement.

I miss so much when games set up cute couples and actually followed through with them. No will they wont they crap. No ambiguous endings. Just wholesome romance before everything had to be gay and "sibling coded".

Thats one of the big things I'm noticing going back and playing old rpgs. Most had romances set up and satisfyingly followed through with in the most wholesome ways and 9 was like the epitome of that. You genuinely don't get this anymore and it sucks. I dread a 9 remake as I'm sure they would absolutely ruin this portion of the game.

Also it made me sick watching some commie meet up and them proudly talking about destroying depictions of traditional marriage and relationships.

Pot calling the kettle black. It means he had jackshit to do with the game from a game design standpoint.

>Do you not know what collaboration means?
I know what it is and that's not what happened here. It's more akin to when Kaneko wrote the original concept of SMT IV and then handled it to other Atlus writers to make a game out of it.

>Here's the rest of that thought since you're a disingenuous shitter:
That's only pragmatically correct, you imbecile. A final performance is a swan song by definition, regardless of its quality. You're prioritising excellence over finality, but this is only valid if said work was a masterpiece to begin with, otherwise you won't count it as his swan song. If a brilliant director's last film is a rushed, poorly-reviewed flop, people are less likely to call it his "swan song" (notice I also put it in between brackets in my original post too). It's like saying Blackstar wouldn't count as David Bowie's swan song if the album sucked just because you want to remember him fondly.

Besides, FFIX isn't even his best work at Squaresoft and the game is pretty mediocre to boot. And the bombed movie is what made him leave ("die") Squaresoft altogether.
