What's the best way to experience Mother 2 these days? I remember Maternalbound being liked, but there seems to be several new ones superseding it

What's the best way to go about it?

Flat out the SNES original

There's only a couple of censorship changes I don't like, but you should experience the way most everybody else did, and I'm talking about people emulating the game as far back as 2000

I've played it before, I know what the original is like, if I wanted a pure experience I would've downloaded it (well actually that wouldn't even be a pure experience considering the script isn't the most faithful so outside of the Japanese original you're still getting a romhack either way)

These kinds of answers always appear when people ask about romhacks and mods and are pointless.

Keep in mind that "Perfect Edition" is out of date slightly on RHDN, look up the creator's name online, he posted his google drive link around. I also wish he used Giegue instead, maybe as an optional patch in the future though..

Anyway Maternalbound Redux is a replacement for og Maternalbound, so don't consider the original.

As for Perfect Edition vs MB Redux, neither's perfect imo. Haven't gotten to compare the scripts between either (its a long RPG mang), but PE's author claims MB Redux's retranslation felt unnatural and a bit fanon-y with still keeping localization changes too, so i dunno. Maybe someone else autistic has compared the two more thoroughly.

Play the US original (or JP original if you can read Japanese) as your first playthrough, then MaternalBound Redux with MSU-1 audio thereafter.

If anyone has never heard it and needs a laugh, go listen to the msu-1 music on Youtube. Holy shit, if they thought that was good then you know they aren't stopping there and they found a way to fuk with the rest of the game as well.
I really don't mean to insult anyone here, but wtf are you thinking listening to that.

translation also very weird
>ness's hp are maxed out
>instead of just writing ally or party member they write to one of us

Literally just sounds like the original music but in CD quality, no idea what you're talking about

Hit points are, not "hit points is"
"One of us" is translating the Japanese

colloquialisms.
i get what you are saying, but these just aren't regular ways of saying things and come off as awkward

Certain instruments are completely different, for example the brass being one of the most glaring, and the sound design as well as mixing is drastically changed. If you really like it, fine, ignore what I said.

While I see what you're saying, a lot of the flavour text in EB is in semi-first person, so I reckon "one of us" suits it better than it would any other RPG.
And I don't know, I've always read, in every game, exp, pp, mp and hp as points so I always use plurals to talk about them, even in speech so it looks natural to me

yeah, i see that there is probably a certain subset of fans who might like that and for people who play the game over and over it's no big deal to try different versions. i shouldn't be so hard on it

Honestly, I'm not fully certain myself on which to pick (I've heard good things about both MaternalBound and Perfect Edition), but I know for certain MOTHER 2 Deluxe is ass. Do not touch that one

Learn Japanese. Maternalbound (not redux) is close, but it misses a bunch of stuff and has broken English in places. Not sure about the others.

You must not look at /vr/ too often because there's always some chucklefuck asking what shitty romhack gives the best first playthrough experience. Your question does not imply you have already played the game.

This may be a hot take but I don't think using a mod for a first experience is a bad thing. Maybe if it's a shitty mod or hack but general improvement or restoration hacks are more than OK most of the time.

It depends on the game. If I were to show my friend Secret of Mana, it'll be with one of the romhacks, because despite my nostalgia, I know it's an imperfect game and could be fixed.

If I wanted somebody new to play Earthbound, it'd just be the original.

By first playing Mother 1 (original version, of course)
