>Nintendo creates a masterclass in 2D platforming with a distinct and attractive visual style
>They follow it up with a literal baby game with blurry pre-rendered graphics

What the FUCK were thinking?

It wasn't that different. Hatred of Yoshi's Story is evidence Yoshi's Island wasn't good in the first place.

I actually liked this game a lot when it came out and that’s all that matters as I was its target audience at the time. I thought the aesthetic of the game looked good and a lot of the darker stages look cool and almost ominous even. This is the only yoshi game I ever bothered to complete and I probably have played through it like ten times over the years.

Compared to what? this is like star fox 64 where you can at the very least beat it in a few hours. Even if you don’t like it, it respects your time. Compared to something like ocarina of time or Mario 64 where I never finished either game because I would always lose interest, start a new game later to replay it, would lose interest, start a new game to replay it, etc.

It has a great visual style and the main controls of Yoshi feels fine. Its just that the levels are not that great. I also rather dont like most of the music in it.

Honestly I never have finished a Zelda or Mario game I find them to be boring franchises. they could have scaled down Mario 64 and OOT by 10 or 20% and streamlined it and it would have been better IMO. OOT just felt too large to be bothered to go everywhere and the world was not interesting. It’s just a very watered down interpretation of an old western fantasy world with none of the grit because it’s a Nintendo franchise. you can’t make something more generic than that if you tried too. even in 3rd grade I found it to be a boring world where everything looks boring and is boring. Mario 64 was a fun game in short bursts but for every few good levels there is some shit tier world you need to replay multiple times and if they cut like 10 or 20% of the worlds from that game it would probably improve it. Or they could have just spent a few more months on the game making better stages.

There are things that stand out that I liked about the games I can list but I didn’t find either one interesting enough to complete and I think a lot of it comes down to pacing. Both games have a good start but after a few hours they turn into a slog like walking through knee deep mud.

>yet another thread shitting on the only good yoshi game
It's a fun little platformer to play for a couple of hours on a lazy evening with buttery controls, nice musix and cool pre-rendered graphics. The only reason anybody hates this game is because they were either A) retarded and thought it only had 6 levels, or B) because it's muh baby game, meanwhile the same crowd sucks off Yoshi's Island to no end even though it is, literally, a game about a baby.

The appeal of Zelda is the quirk if anything. It's a very Japanese and a very pleasant interpretation of Western fantasy.

My issue with Zelda games is there is no way to describe it without it sounding like 1000 other generic fantasy franchises. Because that’s what it is. there is nothing about it that is unique or interesting because the entire concept has been done over and over. They didn’t reinvent it or change anything. And even worse they just watered it down to make it as friendly and non threatening as possible. it’s just really boring. There are too many other places you can get the Zelda experience but better elsewhere. I have never understood how or why there is a die hard Zelda fan base. I don’t understand what the draw is or what the secret is to its success. It’s just guy in green pajamas with a used sword to fight monsters in his newest quest 2025 like it’s a fifa game.

It being watered down and friendly looking inherently isn’t even the problem. I like Kirby games. but whatever experience Zelda games are trying to give you are just better executed by other offerings.

This is the difference between games as a kid and games as an adult
when you're a kid you want games to be as long as possible with as much content as possible
when you're adult it's better when games are short and sweet and endlessly replayable

I have never been 5 pounds over weight. I just binge eat sometimes. I will eat clean for like 2 weeks but then eat an entire bag of candy like a bag of lifesavers or 20 cookies. I exercise multiple times a week.

I take it you never played the game then. Yoshi's Story was so dumbed down you only needed to beat a single level per world in order to advance to the next world. You could beat the game in 5 minutes with casual play, not even a speedrun.

The sound and visuals are top notch for what they were trying to do and while I admit the core ganeplay of eating 30 fruits to immediately finish the level was suoer flawed In the end I was the target audience when it came out and it succeeded in appealing to me. Its no yoshis island but its still a great game.

Star Fox 64 is a home arcade game with multiplayer as a plus.
Yoshi's Story is the generational tax write off. All the work for it would have been put on a Wario Land game had Nintendo not obsess over the Virtual Boy/VR32.

apart from the fact all of the Japaneseisms give it a completely different tone to actual Western fantasy, and there's also a very celtic tone about the whole thing.
Plus, you really do rarely see just straight forward fairy tale stuff anymore. Disney hasn't even made that stuff since like the 80's. I'm far more bored of D&D Elves and Dwarves at this point.

Eh, depends what you're looking for. It didn't have as big a library, but it had some really good games (especially for the time).
Mario Kart, F-Zero, and Pilot Wings matured into actual franchises I give a shit about, as opposed to boring Mode7 demos. First person shooters existed, and weren't just really weak ports of DOS games.
And OOT and MM are the best games ever made. No take backs.
