I'm technically a millennial, but might as well call me a zoomie since my brain has been fried by doom scrolling and short-form content online.
Still I love playing retro games, except my attention span won't let me complete one before starting another. It got to the point where I started keeping lists of what games I was in the middle of. This is just 1 list (for the snes) and so far I've only finished two games.
I must be playing hundreds of games right now, and not all of them are retro but most are. Kinda wondering if anyone else shares this brand of autism? I've got excel spreadsheets too, to keep track of which games I completed and what my ratings for them are.

Sorry if this topic isn't strictly /vr/ enough, but the jannies won't do anything about it either way so °_°

Okay. Why should I care?
>This is just 1 list (for the snes) and so far I've only finished two games
Maybe you should only make a list of games you've beaten then. Older games tend to be harder, especially if they adopt any arcade like design. Not as many people will want to play the same game for 5 hours straight if they are just playing it, game over, and get booted to the title screen. So it isn't uncommon to juggle a few games. Maybe you're just falling out with a game because later on games give you more resistance in beating them.

I've been at it for 30 years now and the majority of the games making that list are short games. With most 8/16 bit games, you can easily beat half a dozen games in a single week end.
The Xbox game is Genma Onimusha. I've never been interested in the XBOX, there is maybe 2 or 3 other games I'd maybe check out on it.

Maybe 20% I've actually finished. Plenty more I've played once for maybe an hour and then never went back to. A lot stuff is from bundles or free shit I'll probably never play but its handy to keep a record. More than once I've picked something up only to later find out I already have it on another store.

Man Xbox is what I grew up on, PS2 and Gamecube. I don't even know which gen that is but most of my completed games come from those 3 consoles. Still the first video game I ever played was Ghostbusters for the NES so I don't consider myself some kind of tourist here.
>you can easily beat half a dozen games in a single weekend
True, I guess I tend towards longer RPGs. Plus I play a lot of sports and fighting games (solo) and give myself weird "beat" conditions like finish the Arcade mode with every character without losing once. Idk why I'm like that lol

You're right, it becomes a chore sometimes. I envy people who can pick up a game and play it without feeling the need to categorize it. It's not just games either, I keep lists and lists of everything in my life. Still the sense of accomplishment I feel from completing an entire sheet is nice.

I did have a Dreamcast for a short period of time and also emulated it a bit. I don't think I actually beat anything on it though, the most use I got out of it was playing Quake 3, Unreal Tournament and Powerstone 1 and 2 with a friend.
Maybe I beat Soul Calibur

You must have considerable skill to beat 3 games a day for two days. Or using save statesand rewinds.

This is what I do, I don't finish the games because I feel like I need to. I will drop a game if it sucks or is boring. The list is just how I handle my severe ADHD. I only finish games I like just not usually in a timely manner

How in the hell are you going to remember what you were doing in the middle of Tales of Phantasia?
I have this issue sometimes like I have a file that's pretty far through Bloodborne but when I load up the game again, I'll just start over.

Weird question, but are you perhaps unemployed? I'm not saying work gives you purpose but I never felt like there was a reason to do anything and I felt like a leech to my parents when I was unemployed so I'd never pick up any serious games, only games that have "runs" in them, as in when you die you start over so there's no commitment.

>How do you remember what you're doing in the middle of a game?
I don't always, but usually I'll just run about until I remember. Only time that really impedes me is in dungeon crawlers like Bard's Tale or Might and Magic for NES. With those first person hallways. I might leave myself notes if I think it's necessary. Could be months before I return to it.

>Are you unemployed?
Nah, I've been doing this since I was a kid though. Call me a compulsive list maker.

I do understand not wanting to commit to long games when your actual life isn't going where you want it to. I've actually sold my whole game collection before just because I wanted a fresh start, I wanted to reorient my priorities. That was when I still had hope of finding a good job or a heckin trad family. Now I couldn't care less, this country (US) is seriously going down the shitter and society doesn't care about young people anymore. I do the bare minimum to keep myself afloat, I have no desire to help line my boss's pockets with extra bonuses off my hard work.
(A little tangential but oh well)

If you are 30+ stop typing with emoticons, grow up. Also if you are frustrated with not being able to finish a game exercise some willpower and do it, stop being a spineless dough boy. Resigning yourself to being a dopamine addicted leech is pathetic.

The youngest millennials are 29/30 as of current year.
To answer, no, I don't make lists of anything except daily tasks in my notebook at work. I'm in the middle of playing ~10 games right now, I play the one I feel like playing that day. Sometimes I lose interest and drop some, but I'm a chaotic dude and things like lists are too rigid for me.

I do not do this. There's no need for a long list of unfinished games like that because the old entries (which will be most of them) will all have gone stale already, at any given moment. You'll have to restart those games anyway so why not drop them from your list? Then if you go back and play again, you can just pretend you never played and start from the beginning.

I keep an informal list in my head and in the form of a small stack of games (maybe two to six at a time) that I'm kinda into at the moment. If the games have a lot of story or other continuity-reliant elements then I focus on them and try to refrain from starting any other such games while in the middle of them. You can't go back to the middle of a relatively complex JRPG after leaving the game alone for a long time. With some games though, that's fine. You can do half the puzzles in a Picross cartridge and then quit for a year and then come back and do the rest, no problem.

If your list is only meant to capture history, then it's fine of course. If it's meant to be a useful tool for directing you back to games you intend to resume, then it's a broken tool and you should alter your strategy. Some of the games on your list rely too much on internal continuity to be interrupted for a long time. You need to just... learn to finish things, whether by completing them on their own terms or by semi-permanently dropping them. It's not THAT hard.
