Gotta say, I agree. The kart models themselves look especially bizarre for some reason.

>>11899513
They fit just fine, especially if you play on a CRT where their 2D nature is obscured. It's especially a shame that they would just port in the Bowser model from Mario 64 when Mario Kart 64 upgraded Bowser's design so much that his MK64 look became the default for decades after. MK64 Bowser is practically perfect and thoughtlessly subbing in his derpy Mario 64 model with zero refinements is a poor choice.

the gameplay looks so much better (and the original was already amazing), but i find the mature setting to be generic and lame
yeah cutesy japanese artstyle is cheesy and extremely overdone, but it's overdone because PEOPLE LIKE IT!!!!!11111

it must have taken a lot of optimization to get this many explosions on screen, and looking at the way he codes he is literally insane
https://x.com/SokZaJelo/status/1918052632230506540/photo/1
for some reason he REFUSES to use pointers unless absolutely necessary, every function takes in a u8 index of the entity array rather than just an entity*, and instead of the entity struct having a member like "void* vars" to point to the variables unique for an individual object, he just has these generic reusable members called "varA" "varB" "varC", and he doesn't even have the decency to use C macros to give them readable names, OH WAIT he probably can't because:
https://x.com/SokZaJelo/status/1853824097098088781
which probably explains why nothing is statically typed, AND TO TOP IT OFF, the code is filled with magic numbers, look at how he multiplies like EVERYTHING by 256, i'm guessing he's treating s32 as fixed point and using the lower 8 bits for the decimal.... WHY NOT JUST DEFINE A MACRO FOR THIS????? (and personally i find gcc optimizes bitshift and bitwise slightly better than multiply and modulo but it doesn't matter unless you're a cycle counting autist)

My first instinct was to defend his indices because there's so many great things you can do with them like validation, block transfers on old platforms, cache management on new platforms, swapping the Zero/Direct Page on SNES for faster access... but he's not doing any of that. He's using it like a pointer but worse.

I'd be concerned he's actually slowing things down by using u8 indexes on a 16-bit system but I don't know the Motorola 68000 or its compilers well enough

https://www.timeextension.com/news/2025/07/developer-of-new-e60-mega-drive-genesis-game-accused-of-using-stolen-artwork
>Kai Magazine Software, the developer of homebrew games like Metal Dragon, Life on Mars, and The Secret of the Four Winds, has been accused of using stolen artwork on its upcoming Western-themed shooting gallery Death & Lead (alternatively titled Dead & Lead).
>Some examples Krokodyl highlighted, for instance, include Kai Magazine Software lifting animations from classic video games like Shinobi III (1993) and Wild Guns (1994), and perhaps more egregiously copying the work of a Vietnamese pixel artist named Dwayne Tran.
>We tried to reached out to Kai Magazine Software on three separate occasions for a comment to see if they had any response to these allegations, but have yet to hear back.

Krokodyl had previously busted Rod Merida "translating" several games for Retro-Bit which were sold on cartridges by stealing ancient fan translations and hex editing them to insert his name in credits (but forgetting to remove names of old translators).

I tried working out how the battle menus would function. It's not perfect, but it gets the job done.

Side note: The entire battle screen uses 242 out of 256 background tiles (assuming a Japanese font). That leaves only 14 tiles to spare. Needless to say, VRAM is pretty tight.

Sup /hbg/ ; around 2 years ago, i started a SimCity SNES romhack adding mouse support. I was updating this thread constantly with progress and about 90% done with the project when life got in the way and i was dealing with some nasty frustrating scrolling bugs. Anyway, i've picked it up again and have ironed out the scrolling issues finally. Thank god.

This hack is fully featured, autistically detailed, tested on real hardware, and the game plays with the SNES controller the same way it always did, but you can use a mouse now by plugging / unplugging it in at any time: It's basically a replacement for the original game. It was a ton of effort and i'm very excited to share it with the world soon... I'm ironing the final details now. Expect release in August. for real this time i swear!!!

Sadly seems like nobody is bothering to put any more work into fully dumping/reverse engineering getting that game working now that they have the stop-gap solution of a modified version of an RA core and MP3 files to take the place of proper sound emulation. Obvious "go here and try your new ability" vertical shaft is just spike walls that can't be navigated, to the upper-right of the boss room is a bunch of kihunters that kill me if I look at them wrong and it looks like the road to the Plasma Beam area in the GBA game, so there's nowhere to really press through but the Gravity Suit SA-X here, and it doesn't seem like there's anything past her.

Yeah, got stuck on that SA-X for a while. Died many times trying to aggro it back into the left room or making it speed booster into the right wall but pulling those tricks off didn't do anything helpful. That review is pretty accurate, it is technically impressive but the difficulty and execution demands so early in the game hurts the presentation a lot. The dialogue is also atrocious. Spotted a review complaining about the long unskippable death cutscene (that can be skipped if you press L+R+Weapon Cancel).
It reminded me of that shitpost hack "Super Metroid But I hate You" and that one has logic that once you've "died" for the first time (fake insta-death on touching spikes), subsequent spike collisions have quick animations and put you back at the start of the screen, almost like many SMW hacks.

Yeah, in-game documentation goes a long way.
Not retro, but my dumbass played Celeste 3D without playing Celeste first, and legit did not know how to progress past the opening sequence because nothing in-software tells you that you can perform wall climbs or what button to use. That info only existed on the Itch.io page iirc.

Modern software usually gets this right if a player starts pressing buttons during a skippable cutscene; a bit of text saying something like "Hold X to skip" appears. It prevents accidental skips and it lets you know that you can skip, and how.

Yeah, contextually showing a character an item in OoT was a design flaw. Although the game does tell you that you should show the item to a character (showing the royal letter to the Kakariko guard for Death Mountain access), it doesn't have proper context.
It isn't too hard to figure out putting the item on a C-button, and pressing the button in front of the character after talking to them, but this was apparently enough of an issue that Majora's Mask implemented specific functionality for showing an NPC an item mid-dialogue. Some players still mucked this up though and would accidentally drink a red potion in front of Koume instead of giving it to her, because of confusion in how to do it.

Yeah, i just booted up 1.0 tonight, why does a random fucking slug one shot me kaizo style when bosses take away like 40 / 60 health per hit? This is dumb lol.
I feel like this is what happens when you work on a game for 10 years and don't have anyone else test it, you get ridiculously good at it and think it's too easy until the difficulty is just ridiculous.
Also, Metroid Fusion itself is flawed: Save stations should not restore health. It's impossible to balance a game like that constantly getting full health every few rooms: it makes health pickups and health upgrades generally worthless except in bossfights, or, worthless because in this game a random slug is just a one hit kill lol. You can't have a fair and challenging game that way.

Older hacks that weren't made with the current SM64 modding tools that work with the decompilation source code, were known to have a bunch of issues like not running on real hardware often because they did things that were only possible on emulators.
Even if the code was fully console safe, they might too things like try to render too many polygons, so real hardware's performance would tank whilst an emulator could use speedhacks.

Years back, Kaze Emanuar did a port of Super Mario Star Road to get it working on real hardware.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQjn4nVJIJw
The video mentions a tool that works to fix older hacks to work on console, but there was a lot of manual fixes for Star Road's custom code and performance problems stemming from inefficient geometry.

Maybe that tool can fix Star Revenge 6.25 if it's a pre-2019 hack (I'm not familiar with it).

I'm not the biggest fan of the Samus and Adam development in vanilla fusion anyway, so I'm fine with that mostly being gone but it is really surprising how much of the fusion setup he skipped. While it was obvious you should play vanilla fusion first and this game was going to be a massive reimagining too different to call a remake, it's actually to the point where you won't understand what's going on without having played vanilla fusion or at least seen the Dread prologue.

And yeah I did notice the game was more like super than I expected. It's a super romhack at the end of the day sure, but when he called it a crossover between the two games at release, I thought he was exaggerating. Then he brought in almost every super boss. Most of them were great but Draygon and the rehashed giant metroid rescue felt extremely forced.

Look, I get it, you are under 20, you weren't there in the 2000s, but Parallel Worlds was blindly praised because "the first ever AlttP Hack" with custom graphics and new mechanics, which btw, they weren't any, it was a Skin Mod, but with awful level design, late game enemies early on and more enemies per screen regardless of how it would run on real hardware, as a matter of fact, PW was designed like those early SMW hacks, to be played on Zsnes and with design that relies on Save States, I played trough this hack back in 2007 and yes, I beat it, and guess what, even back then I knew it was way too hard.

I also don't get why people watch Kaizo streams. What is entertaining about watching someone die 500 times on the same screen, only to get to the second one two hours in?
The original Kaizo was good and used a lot of original ideas at the time. Instead of just repeating it again, they should try making their own sub genre, like the original Kaizo author did.

Metaquarius thought he was making Metroid Souls, that's the issue.

I unironically believe dark souls was a very big mistake. It influenced so many games but in the wrong way. Open world wrpg like skyrim did similiar kind of damage to other games and genres just as wow did. These devs dont understand what makes that game good, all they see is a single aspect of it and they try to shoehorn that shit into their slop.

sometimes it can work. you are forced into a very small section of the game with no way to backtrack and you only have a handful of rooms to progress so your choices are limited. later in the game, right before it opens up you are in a weird part of the game where you have the choice of progressing through a hellrun situation or look for an alternative way to progress. that part was dog shit and his patch didnt really adress it. he should have closed up all doors right before the hellrun so it would have been more obvious but he decided to just nerf some enemies which didnt really help imho.

unfortunately it's gonna be a totally different answer for every game. audio code is the least standardized thing on these old machines
(assuming no existing documentation is available here)

one way, if the sound is synthesized:
try running a code logger while the sfx plays. I know Bizhawk has one for Gen/MD
ideally you do this when nothing else is going on, eg. a sound test menu, otherwise it may also grab other code.
this will log what bytes in the ROM were utilized, and whether they're code or data
you can also log a neighboring sfx separately to look for differences and filter out anything common
and then once identified, you can try and either wipe it all out with $00s in a hex editor and hope nothing breaks
or do a bit of reverse engineering to figure out the format for the sfx data/code and change the pitches/volumes/etc.

if the sound is sampled:
same idea but then it's just PCM data of some kind which can be replaced with any other PCM data of the same type

||I was bored so I tried finding it. using a "Eliminate Down (J).bin"
I'm guessing you're talking about sfx 38 in the sound test
at $4F44E, the bytes $23 00 00 03 31 02 00 09 00 1F 1F 1F 1F 00 all seem to affect sound in some way, especially the last 2 bytes there
specifically turning the first $1F at $4F457 at $00 seems to disable it entirely
this also affects sfx 37 as well as 38. it's possible this is an instrument setting that is also used elsewhere in the game

other potential ranges to try goofing with:
$4F44C 29 bytes
$43D91 12 bytes
$35B2 24 bytes
$3606 12 bytes||

good luck
I also see a major hack of this game was just released less than a month ago called "Eliminate Down - Remix Mode", maybe reach out to the author for help

Super starts you with everything but the dispersion beam and omega suit. Omega does NOT start you with everything either. Super is the easy mode of the game, Omega (in spite of all the additional stuff you start with) is intended for people who've mastered Normal (specifically in terms of world traversal and item collection).

iirc, the main gimmick of his metroid suit is that you can stand in green lasers to shoot hyperbeam, while also granting cold weakness. So, in effect it's like a mix of the phazon and fusion suits.

What strikes me as odd is that its description claims it's just made of a verdite alloy, not somehow biologically linked to metroids. Makes it feel a little forced.

it's been a while but I think the lore book said that the ship you find the metroid suit in was researching metroids in order to build weapons, so it's possible it still incorporates metroid dna in some way, while also using verdite to have more resistance or such.

>>11933851
>I'm also trying to learn python, is Cython any good?
nta, but Cython is pretty niche, it compiles python-like language to C. Unless you're trying to optimize a python program I wouldn't worry about that.
You should probably learn some C regardless of anything else.

The site started development at a time where's RHDN's future was uncertain (when only news could be submitted and when the site's filehost was at risk of getting shutdown). And despite RHDN
eventually reopening submissions, however, ROMhack.ing still serves as a decent alternative (and is even considered by some as RHDN's spiritual succesor).

An advantage that RHDI has over RHDN (in my opinion) is that they have a bot that informs people on Twitter and Bluesky about any new submissions (hacks, translations, news, etc.), which may help them get a wider reach.
