we were talking about this in the previous thread, whether or not looking up secrets in the OG wads is cheating or not

personally i feel like a senile old man and i feel bad doing it i'm surprised people are defending me

compare it to a metroid 100% completion game or something

thing is my stack is too low for my level of skill to clear e1m6 on UV -fast with nightmare reflexes so i need to either get way better or look up the secrets

Yeah that's not really "cheating" especially if you're playing with a custom ruleset or a restriction that is meant to be tougher. Unless you've been playing both the IWADs day after day constantly for decades I wouldn't be too hard on yourself.
I remarked a thread or two ago that a lot of the community wads that people tend to pistol start UV are much less tedious once you know at least some secrets to help out with some wild encounters (probably by design since UVMax is a ubiquitous category).
That might be a little unrelated but I think would still apply to that nightmare reflexes mod you've got going on there, especially if you end up playing Final Doom.

You're supposed to have knowledge of all secrets before tackling vanilla maps on UV, especially on pistol start. Way too many crucial resources are hidden in them. There's no shame in looking them up either in online guides or by opening the maps in editor to cut the time waste.
Your skills have definitely deteriorated, looking at this webm. Two advices:
1. It's better to use chaingun precisely by firing it in bursts of two (single tap) against weak and compact enemies like imps and hitscanners.
2. It's better to maneuver so that only about a quarter or a third of enemy's sprite is visible at all times from beyond corner so that you can precisely attack them while they won't attack you.

btw, to whoever said you need to know where all the secrets are to beat the OG wads on UV, i don't agree. i beat doom 1 ep 1-3 and the first few levels of doom 2 collecting very few things, just fighting the bare minimum i needed to clear the levels

The first two episodes were great.
The third episode was good too, but I had to look up how to exit two of the maps (E3M6: Mt. Erebus and E3M7: Limbo, as stated in the last thread).
The fourth episode was pretty bad and I cheated just to get it over with.

Any option settings that are green, are non-vanilla. Turn them off for the port to act closer to Choco.
With DOS you might be able to run it on DOOM32.EXE, and also the olde BOOM with vanilla compatibility switch.

Just play on a lower difficulty. Seems weird to worry about, "is looking up where the fuck the exit is considered cheating" and then use cheat codes. Especially doing it, "just to get it over with", which sounds like you didn't enjoy it at all.
While I'm giving unsolicited advice: play Doom II and don't worry about vanilla purism or never looking up maps. If there were any Doom settings that could make it 1994 again we'd have found them by now.
Also consider pistol starting on lower difficulty. It's how the games were designed and tested. I found it makes a lot of levels more interesting, particularly weapon placement.

I'm assuming you lads have tried different alternatives? Gamepad suits some, and some gamepads offer gyro input, which can be a good substitute for mouse.
Otherwise, there's non-disabled people who absolutely SWEAR by trackballs and say they're much better than mice, depending on your situation, maybe alternatives like those are worth considering.

Yep, and even with controllers I've got a bunch including a steam controller, which is pretty handy in itself.

The lunging attacks Imps have make some fights pretty bad. Seeing as those fights were designed with you being able to comfortably maneuver around, but those lunging Imps can make some ambushes or close quarters fights instant death.

Not that the vast majority are even that bad people, they're not, but most don't tend to have all that much interesting to say, and when that gets dotted by the absolute fucking idiots and the real assholes, it doesn't make for a very compelling climate overall. To me, anyway.
Site culture there also doesn't particularly tolerate the type of shittalking and sensibilities you'd see really anywhere on 4chan, so if you do want to spend time there, mind your manners/"manners" and lingo, I don't always say everything I actually think when I do visit.

That said, there are a fair few people on there who REALLY know their shit about editing Doom, and who will gladly help you and teach you how to get things done or how to fix problems. There's shit I can talk about Doomworld, but they do have that going for it, and I'm personally legit thankful for that, even as a bystander I can learn from those interchanges. Some of those people are even cool dudes, but even some of the assholes are 'scholarly' in that sense.

Doomworld is also one of the biggest and most visible hubs for Dooming, so if you want to publish Doom content and have people actually see it, it's your go-to. Maybe you don't like the people there at all, but publishing there will still help your work get around, and it's probably the biggest reason of all to use it.
You really can just use it for only that and then ignore the rest of the site, and some people do just that.

I never disliked the mod. The version I am mostly familiar with is many years old now. It had a very loud shotgun sound compared to the rest of the guns. I also found the go fuck yourself taunt funny a few times. The melee kills also look alright and its not like the game forces you to rely on them the way the new Doom games seemingly do. BD is one of the most annoying topics because everyone is wrong.
On one hand, you had game journos and fans who knew shit about Doom and its modding, thinking it's what classic Doom should be (Based on a misrepresentation of a Romero quote) or that it invented features that other mods and ports had.
On another, most people only know BD drama through second hand info and barely talk about the mod's actual technical problems (Funny enough, only /vr/ talked about the issues and bugs and that was during 2017/8).

Necromantic Thirst is absolutely gigantic but I've been thoroughly enjoying it, currently on MAP19. Right now I can only play one level before getting tired with how much great work was put into each map. The only one I didn't like was the slaughtermap on MAP15, but that's only because I hate slaughtermaps. And it was still visually stunning. By NES standards it's rather forgiving, you have a fairly long healthbar, you have a laser whip for close combat, a pistol for medium range rapid fire, and grenades with splash damage which you can throw pretty far.
Ammo drops are frequent, and you get unlimited continues, so even if you die to a boss and run out of lives, you can try a level from the beginning again. Oh yeah, and you can use your weapons while climbing ladders.

It also has very nice presentation, great music and graphics, similar to Batman and Ninja Gaiden, just without their higher difficulty.
If you wanted something more chill and easygoing, but still fun, it's a good choice.

I've been playing it infrequently and found the maps pretty fun for someone who hasn't played much of the community stuff, but FUCK Pipework-Powered Pillars. That last part with like 75 enemies staggered in packs of 6 or so with pillars that descend into the lava while also giving you no health can go fuck itself. Maybe my stupid fault for trying it on Nightmare but had to save-scum it.
Rest of the maps are good though, it's visually different enough from Q1 but not in a jarring way and mostly plays great.

What is the first FPS to properly show the weapons being used by the player's model?
I believe it could be Quake 2 since the Ranger still had a made up weapon attached to his model.
But I think Quake 3 took this more seriously because of how detailed and colorful the weapons are.
As if they were specifically designes to be recognizable during combat.

People submit literally who releases to the newspost fairly often. I think it's mainly that few people want to self-advertise that way when they know they're still noobs learning the ropes, and you'll see that here, people posting their noob .wads without replying to the newspost.
Then you conversely have people looking through recent releases on forums, see something they think is interesting, then post it here.

I'm certain also that some people from said forums will secretly self-advertise this way too, but it's not like there's any way to stop that, nor that it matters all that much either, their entry inevitably rolls off the post in time, and there's countless releases where, at least me personally, I'll give them a quick look, think "Meh." then move on and forget about it, even with stuff from bigger names.

The newspost is also apparently an appreciated feature even by people who aren't regulars to /doom/, like people who will just swing in and look at that post alone every so often.

Never had that happen, and that sounds like it's a bug, either on the port end or on a mod end. The stuff which makes me drop a lot of frames is the huge open landscape stuff with lotsa detail, you know, the kinda big bad epic maps which Lainos makes.

Also not always, and it'll depend on the given area. Usually it's not that it becomes a slideshow, more that it goes below 35fps here and there and stops being smooth.

My idea was more a conventional industrial base but with a lot of emphasis on making it look like sewers and a sewage treatment plant all around, and then the big sector toilet would be like the surprise at the end.

Yellow key fight made me sweat a bit, not gonna lie.
Not saying I was disappointed, but way more in my wheelbarrow than the MAP09 finale.
I was getting really worried after a while of that.
My usual blind run strat of running like hell and turning the most defensible corner into a killzone ended up being crazy strong. Only the yellow key took more than two lives off me.
15 deaths in all iirc, still took fewer tries than that fucking arena

Christ, you weren't kidding about the marines, the Prometheus ambush was ridiculous! I ended up bashing most of them to death with a pickaxe because it was more effective than shooting. The rocket launcher also feels kinda flimsy compared to Doom and Quake's. The 8 Ball Gun is a lot more satisfying, especially how the sound amplifies when you fire multiple rockets/grenades.

I think Gryphon adds different damage types, and the armor certain enemies (marines especially) wear absorbs explosions. But I did find the eightball more useful overall since enemy AI became a lot less agile, so it's easier to load all chambers then peek around a corner and dump them into someone's face.

It's nice that the mod allows for respecs. I went for a more speed-based character at first, but soon enough I stumbled across some marine armor and a powerbelt, which made me feel like I was playing FPS Space Hulk, so I put every skill point into the two strength trees and became nigh invincible. And I agree on the eightball. I grabbed the special one in the water temple and never looked back.

Love that thing. I have the hardest time letting go of it and the special sword from the other temple. The upgraded 8ball in >>11909679 is also nasty: Feels like it's loading rockets twice as fast.
I actually haven't played the traditional mode of the mod in a while, I've been stuck playing the XPless "classic" version. It might probably be a fun idea next time I replay all these level packs to keep some progression going from mod to mod.
