What are some good ones? The Sims 1 actually makes it 3D, it's good. Is Diablo good on PS1? How about C&C?

It happened with the original Xbox. All the PC games got moved to the Xbox, and became PC/Console hybrids that don't really have the strengths of either. Genres that didn't transfer over cleanly, like RTS, got killed entirely after a bunch of failed attempts.

That cover of Wolf 3D is single handedly the worst one of the bunch. I just chalk it up to it being a generic cover for a random canceled game that they reused because it would be more fitting for some shit like commandos or ikari warriors than Wolf.

C&C was pretty good. The fact that it is slow paced and not exactly micro intensive helps ran to a crawl in big skirmish games though. Pic was solid as well. At least i have no negative memories of the ps version.

I miss that era because they knew they couldn't do PC faithful sims on console so they gave them quirky plots and they were like spinoffs. Nowadays sims on console is just the pc game on console afaik and what self respecting person plays basically the same game but with a controller

I started with Command and Conquer on the PSX, but after playing the PC version some years later I can't help but find it completely inferior. It's far more clunky and less feature complete than the PC versions, it was serviceable for a single player runthrough when you didn't have a PC but not useful in a world where you could just play the PC version.

I even got a friend over to play via link cable on Red Alert, and while it was enjoyable it still wasn't as great as playing a big match on the PC.

I still have a cartridge of this, I got it from eBay way after the fact on the idea that me and my friends loved Starcraft and might want to play it together in the same room outside of a LAN. It's pretty clunky though.

It's funny, I ran through both campaigns too but I skipped several of the expansion missions. I did all of GDI's Covert Operations but NOD's ones were too hard, and in Red Alert Retaliation I skipped around and played each mission for a few minutes before losing or moving on.

I played the absolute shit out of the ant missions though, I loved the idea of needing to build a base and turtle against waves of enemies.

Big fan of console strategy.

Despite having played Civ 4, Civ 2 is what got me into the series. I was away so this was my only 4x option on PSP for a while keeping me sane.

Its too bad that later title became more bloaty for me and the real sequel to civ 2, civ rev, was a ds/ios/xbox exclusive.

Civ2 on the playstation was surprisingly feature complete. I found the UI for Civ2 on the PC sort of clunky back then, so the PSX one wasn't a big turnoff despite it taking more navigation to get to things. I never played Civ Rev though, how was it?

>how was it?
I will be honest, I never played it as religiously as Civ 2 but from what I saw it was the Civ 2.5 that I always wanted since

>finally more victory conditions instead of your kill other empires or send ship
>Deity is actually hard instead of REX strategy in 2
>Some graphical variation between Civs and their units
>cultural borders
>can stack units and make "Armies" by stacking 3 of the same units to get a *3 strength bonus,
>kept the FUNdamentalism civic

To add to all that, it was one of last civs where Sid was personally involved and actually said in one of the interviews he always wanted to build this kind of a game.

So you have to buy an extra peripheral and then move your PS1 and tv to a desk to properly use it, and in the end you still end up with worse control since you can't use keyboard shortcuts.

I used to think that k&m were always better, but nowadays I prefer a controller whenever it's an option. I don't play competitively or anything, and controller gets the job done conveniently and comfortably.

Also I think controller dislike partly stems from those old shitty ports with a slow interfaces for two button NES controllers

This one is legit good. I was expecting just the exact same game as on PC with some cut content and framedrops but there's plenty of changes that make it pretty arcadey and feel at home on a console, like the scoring with multipliers for killing several enemies with one shot, or the lives system. My favorite FPS to play while lying on bed.

I loved the first to death but dropped the sequel not even half way through, it had none of the charm of the original, no compelling face for the gpolice like Orten or factions like krakov or nanosoft (the earth's military reinforcement who show up at the end of the first game are actually the bad guys). No interesting stakes and you have missions where you pilot a mecha which is not interesting... Utterly forgettable. Maybe I dropped it too early but what I played was not good.

The Doom and Final Doom soundtracks on PSX are awesome. Same as with UFO Defense and Terror from the Deep (at least there's mods that fix that for OXCE). The Command and Conquer games are serviceable also thanks to the soundtrack. Some of the Might and Magic and Wizardry games have the best versions on consoles.

Until winXP, console ports were a must and a great deal.
Dealing with win98 PCs and all sorts of incompatibility issues and crashes was a pain in the ass.
The simple plug and play was a monumental cost-benefit solution on the 90s consoles.
