For me its Gabe Logan.
Who else was more of a Syphon Filter guy than MGS, 007, Splinter, etc.
Sure it wasnt able to transition well to PS2 but on PS1 they were the GOAT.
Having to roll the fuck out to avoid headshots, burning enemies to a crisp with the taser or slitting up enemies throats with the knife.
Multiplayer was so fun having knife fights or running like hell when the opponent has the grenade launcher.
Cant remember much of the plot but I will play the trilogy again.

Aren't these just action shooter games? Why do they get compared with stealth games?

1 was fresh and new like MGS was, plus a little more 'real' and the guy is also wearing tactical shit and does have some sneaking. PS2 game online was hell btw, the whole team had to actually coordinate to do the objectives and you would always have at least one clueless or intoxicated dude who fucked it all up.

It has a few stealth sections.
Its less stealth games but special agent stuff I guess.

For me 2 is the better one.

3 didn't got any proper release due to 2001

Yeah headshots were the most annoying part.

I remember playing the first one at a friend's house, and using the taser to set people on fire.

I played the demo of the first one over and over but never gave the actual games a go

Syphon Filter 1 through 3 can generally be considered to all be the same exact game, just cut into 3 full length releases.

You can't just go around exploding people because in a few missions there are viral bombs. They either go off if you alert the triggerman (one of the bosses is a triggerman) or directly shoot the bomb.
For example, the most iconic boss fight in the first game game is against Anton Girdeux, a guy wearing ballistic armor that uses a flamethrower. He's guarding the final bomb, and you're explicitly told to not use explosives on the central platform or everyone dies.

(You can actually shoot the bombs in prior levels, but it just gives you a game over)

I loved this game a lot as a kid.
It was unironically great but people hate it because it wasn't ShitEye 64

I remember there was a boss fight in a park where you had to shoot the lights out to be in complete darkness (you have nightvision goggles), or the boss would one-shot you.

Are there any games, aside from Die Hard Trilogy, that copied the gameplay style of Syphon Filter, from the PS1 / PS2 era? I feel like it was such a strange crossbreed of at-home arcade-style shooter mixed with a sort of cinematic-style shooter.

Which one had the landfill map?

For me its 3-2-1.
I think only 3 or 2 had a vs mode which was pretty fun.
I started with 3 and then worked my way through the previous ones.
I remember having to beat them on a single run due to no memory card.
Being able to select weapons via a list is sorely missed in 1.

>>11908604
>>11909583
I played this too. Dont think I beat it but was pretty good.

>>11909165
Which is not bad. I don't know why some people have an aversion to games having sequels that are just the same game again.

I didn't say it was bad, just saying, if you really like Syphon Filter 1, it's the same thing for the next two games.

Oh okay.
For some reason you see such a sentiment around such sequels.
While it can stagnate if you stick to it too muchblike in Resident Evil.

Haha I remember that final boss.
Got stuck there for hours until I noticed he still gets knocked back by high caliber guns and then its extremely easy.
My fav mission in 2 is when you have to do the level with a bunch of guys in armor and grenade launchers.

>He's guarding the final bomb, and you're explicitly told to not use explosives on the central platform or everyone dies.
And you beat him by shooting the pressurized tank of flammable liquid he carries on his back. It explodes and he proceeds to burn to death... all ontop of the platform.

I remember the story atmosphere in these games was somewhat serious and adult for it's time and even if too much gore or anything isn't shown, it feels serious how terrorists will soon bomb some place or release a virus if you fail. Compared to at least MGS1-3 where there are serious moments but any time things start to get too dark, there's funny moments. SF lacks the humor iirc there are no butt monkey characters or moments, maybe someone cracks a small joke here and there.

I mean in 3 you are in africa and experience how a bunch of blacks dying due to exposure to the syphon filter virus.
Its kinda fucked up. Plus you can torture people with your taser.

Yes and slitting someone's throat was considered pretty cruel too tho I might remember wrong and SF didn't necessarily have such stealth execution from behind. It might have just been that he does the regular knife animation but it's a 1 hit kill. SF2 also had human experimentation labs iirc and you see some bodies.

They all had stealth levels.
Also the original was developed in tandem with MGS, so it wasn't a knockoff.
What was neat was that you could play some of the stealth levels in a non-stealth way, for example, the Kazakhstan level in SF1.

>Syphon Filter guy than MGS, 007, Splinter
I've dreamed of a cross-over game that had Gabe, Snake, and Fisher in alternating levels.

Each game had a fair share of both mandatory and optional stealth sections. Some maps were not-linear, with intersections and alternative routes. Also some gadgets like night vision, thermal vision, electronic sensitivity device, silenced weapons, armor-piercing ammo, silent grenades like gas.

i was a bigger fan of metal gear however i loved both series. i really fell out of love with metal gear though. and even though i probably havent played a syphon filter game in ~20 years id be much more likely to replay them since they are mostly gameplay and not a kojimbo movie

Stealth kills with the knife play an animation of Gabe slitting the back of the victim's throat.

I actually think Syphon Filter does its story way better than MGS, especially SF2. That game told an excellent story without wasting my time.

They constantly say they are in a big hurry to do something or go somewhere but they stop every 15 minutes and stand still to talk about philosophy and politics for 40 minutes lol. Playing mgs2 again while typing this and this game is especially bad in that regard, at least it's all skippable :D At least mgs3 toned it down a bit, tho cutscenes and conversations are actually entertaining and pretty friendly to anyone who hasn't played the series before.
