Is it considered cheating if you drop a game on emulator and come back to the spot you left off? What's the ethical stance of "fake" passwords and saves?

Finally beat Ninja Gaiden 2 without save states or rewind and it was smooth sailing up until the final boss who made me rage quit cause it sent me back to the beginning of the level. But when I booted up the game again where I left off, I realized the final boss keeps the last phase you fought on rematches, so I kept at it until I won. I kinda wish the game just had passwords or something cause it made the win feel kinda fake.

If you're not using it as a sort of "rewind" feature and just use a save to come back to where you left the game off, then it's not different than leaving a console on overnight to pick up again the next day, and it's technically not cheating imo. There was that one japanese guy who had (has?) a Super Famicom on for like 2 decades so as to not lose his Umihara Kawase hi score. (Not sure how the fucker avoided power cutoffs for 2 decades)
If you load up a save state to go back to the final boss after getting a game over when the game sends you back to the beginning, then yes, it's cheating. Gotta do it all over.

Resume savestates are fine as long as you don't abuse them. Everyone pretends like it's like "leaving the console on" but in reality nobody would leave the console on 24/7, they'd only do it occasionally, and would account for your mom noticing and turning it off or power failures? Also if you start using resume savestates for several games at once then yeah it's definitely out of the original boundaries.

In my opinion, anything other than original software on original hardware is technically cheating, though using new technology like save states to bridge old hardware limitations like lack of a native save function is acceptable. You wouldn't leave the console on 24/7, you'd only do it occasionally. You wouldn't do it for several games at the same time. Occasionally your mom would find out, turn off the console, and you'd get a scolding, so realistcly to account for that you should delete your resume savestate once in a while and put a blanket over your device to pretend that you're hiding the fact that it's still on from your mom. At least once a year you should also delete the resume savestate to account for power failures.

Otherwise you didn't beat the game.

Back in the day, people would just pause their game and leave the console on when they had to leave, or even just leave it on overnight. As long as you don't refresh back to the savestate once you die, it's no different from said method of just leaving the console running.
That said, do whatever the fuck you want, unless you're playing for a competition or other bragging rights, then yeah, don't use rewind or savestatescumming or whatever.

It's cheating and I'm personally against it because I feel like it takes away from the experience... but if it doesn't for you, and you disclose that you cheated when discussing the particular title, I don't see any issues, especially since its single player and our fun will always be the most important aspect about our playing experience, I just feel that for me the challenge adds to the fun of it.

I personally see it less as challenge and more as commitment.
I don't know if I consider it "cheating" if you play, say, a 1 hour game in short bursts of 10/20 mins, maybe less. As long as you play by the game's rules of starting over if the game doesn't have infinite continues, it's fair.
Not using save/sleep mode to resume later doesn't make the game harder, but it requires more commitment since you will have to play it all in one sitting. But again, there's the fact you can also pause a fame and leave it for hours on real hard too.

Nah, I save when I want. Like when some fucker puts the save point before a cutscene/scripted sequence.

Though I tend to play arcade-style games on 1CC without save states since they stop being fun when you're just using endless continues/loads..
