King’s Field
IMO King’s Field aged like fine wine. Very smooth control if you’ve ever played any other first person games from that era, especially Baroque. The exploration is amazing and accomplishing something/progressing just feels so satisfying.

King's Field 2 (JP) is my least favorite honestly but I still think all of them are worth playing. The original Shadow Tower is good too.
Never played Baroque but apparently it's like a 3D Mystery Dungeon game, it looks cool

Shadow Tower is one of the next games on my list. It’s a very well executed concept of lonesomeness and darkness.

Baroque is also worth a play if you haven’t tried it. The translation is very accurate and well done. Kinda does function like a mystery dungeon title with how it’s all randomly generated. Items can make or break an entire run and it feels incredibly satisfying to use things to their full potential. Incredibly eerie and lots of lore.

I thought KF1-3 were fantastic but I can't get into Shadow Tower.

the secret to enjoy ST is to use the ''infinite durability'' cheat code (it's included in Duckstation by default)

Barocuck sucks ass, fuck whoever hyped it for years spreading the ''it's better than the remake!'' lie, it's far worse slop

Weapon durability and repairing your shit with HP can be very off putting at first

Durability is only an issue in Human and Earth World. After that you get so many items and opportunities to heal/repair that it's a non issue.

I finally got around to playing Kf3 and I’m not sure how I feel about it. The early game is boring, and then it got fun for a while but then the late game’s puzzles were really lame and just felt pointless.
The exploration in the second game was more intuitive, but I think the main pronlem with 3 is just hardware limitations. Their attempt to make the game feel bigger just ends up feeling like I’m moving from one large square room to another large square room which isn’t very exciting. I don’t like the tweaks to the combat either.
My favorite is still the first one. It reminds me of the first LoZ. Just simple adventurering with a some easy puzzles to break up the action. Lots of fun to blast through in a few hours.

wtf am I reading, 2 is by far the most confusing because it lacks thematic coherence and the level design goes in every direction (often to go nowhere)

>I don’t like the tweaks to the combat either.

3 has some of the best combat in the entire series because it's the only one which has smart enemy placement and enemy combination which forces the player to change up tactics constantly instead of just "attack, walk back or walk to the side, repeat"

3 certainly does have some confusing sections but 2 is just a fucking mess. More often than not you are just running in circles trying to figure what the hell the game even wants from you, it doesn't feel like you are actually exploring stuff like in 1, 3 and 4, it just feels like absolute shit. Also the game for some reason just constantly speeds up and slows down (which is also the case in the prequel demo of 3 called Pilot Style) and before some fag tryhard who hasn't even played the games tells me
>it's because you are emulating
it's same on hardware. This game is just shit compared to the rest of the series

I literally had zero problem with the map in 2. It really isn’t that big of an island. I think you guys just got filtered, or maybe have short term memory problems.
The map in 3 is just objectively boring. Nothing more than a bunch of big open square rooms divided up.

give it the 60fps treatment like they did mario 64 and it'd be perfect

This guy gets it. 1 is a great straightforward dungeon crawler with a nice cryptic story. 2 has the best atmosphere, just sinking into the doomed swamp island and figuring out where everything is. 3 had good ideas and was trying to be the biggest one (going back to the first game's map was fucking kino and unexpected but overall the focus on wide open areas just sucked and the actual labrynths were often unsatisfying
Ancient City, not being part of the Verdite trilogy, is just a streamlined Shadow Tower game and its fantastic
