Copypasting my questions from previous thread:

Hi /hbg/, I will receive my first chin..gloriouschinanumberone-held in coming days (gkd pixel 2)
I have a few questions tho:
>Is there any repository/list of non-gaming software for it? For instance I saw that Iceway music player which seems pretty nice
>Is there any way to use the console as a usb gamepad (for use with phone)
>Easiest way to program stuff for it?

I have a GKD Pixel 1, however this is going to apply to most chinkhelds:
if it has portmaster then you can get other software for it. if not, then you can't. any functionality or features not built in to the default OS don't exist. it's impossible to program anything for it because the chinks don't share all the proprietary libraries, drivers and dev tools and there is no documentation.

When people say "Use Google Translate" they mean open it up on your phone, switch to camera translation, and then hover it over the screen so that it automatically translates it or prop up your phone in a way that you can read it as you play.
RetroArch has a built-in AI translator but most people say it's pretty bad.

They don't really make up to PS1 performance with OLED screens, they're usually going to shoot for the entire fifth gen at the very least. For that weight class, I'd recommend either the Retroid Pocket Classic or Anbernic RG505.
>Retroid Pocket Classic
It's about $150 after shipping on the Retroid website & Amazon. It's a vertical handheld about the size of a Game Boy Color. Has a nice 4" OLED screen, but it's in a very square aspect ratio that is more suitable for Game Boy or SNES. 4:3 scales fine, but good luck with 16:9 games. It also comes with either 4 or 6 face buttons depending on the model, same price. The RPC is actually the more powerful option as it also plays some PS2 and GameCube, but the downside is it doesn't have analog sticks, so you'd have to either hack together some control scheme with the dpad or connect a Bluetooth controller. Also, no video out so have fun standing it up on a desk and using a controller with a 4" screen.
>Anbernic RG505
It's around $120-$150+ depending where you look on AliExpress, before coupons if applicable. 5" 16:9 OLED display in a horizontal orientation compared to the RPC, and it's about the same shape and size as a Nintendo Switch Lite, maybe like an inch shorter. This is great if you want to play PSP or GBA, but has the opposite problem of the RPC with black bars on retro games. It also has some nice Hall effect analog sticks as well, but it lacks the power to play a lot of the PS2 and GameCube games the RPC does that those sticks would be good for. Again, no video out on this one.

Unfortunately, there's no good OLED options for 4:3 gaming if you're specifically looking for that ratio. However, if you aren't married to OLED screens, there's a lot of devices that still have really good screens that can be had for less than $100. TrimUI devices like the Brick and Smart Pro are an example of really bright quality screens that are surprisingly not OLED and both their 16:9 and 4:3 handhelds go for around $50.

NTA but I prefer 3DS sliders to the oversaturation of Vita sticks on budget handhelds. If I'm going to have to put up with cardinal snapping anyways, might as well have something that I can't possibly mistake for an actual analog stick. Plus I think it's easier to control acceleration and pull off precise movements with a slider over a Vita stick. I do think you'd have to be insane to defend the nub though, the second slider add-on they had for a limited time was unironically probably better to use.

The only way one of those is worth buying is if a) you get it second-hand for less than Ali; b) you put GammaOS on it; c) you're only going to use it for PSP and low-req porn games (either native Android builds or JoiPlay).
Like I did.

Otherwise, it's unergonomic (a rectangular slab with some tiny contours on the back), the controls are kinda meh (dual shoulder buttons instead of analog triggers), the screen is reasonably nice but old (OG Vita OLED), it's not very powerful compared to contemporary designs (hexa-core T618), the colors are disgusting (some pastel-ass Switch Lite ripoffs), and it feels simultaneously durable and flimsy (though I think the colors add to that feeling of flimsiness).

Why would I buy a Odin 2 Portal if it's only marginally smaller than the Deck, or an Odin Mini with its cheap screen, or an Ayaneo device that's probably around the same price of the Deck and has worse build quality than Retroid? The new Anbernic device is a contender for this category, but its like $50+ more expensive than the Retroid Pocket 5 with worse ergonomics like side-by-side shoulders. Might make a Kickstarter if there's no takers but sometimes ideas seem to filter through, so idk. Depends if there's any demand here, I do joke a lot but I honestly might consider it. The colours/ textures and "custom shells" may have to be simplified initially to keep costs down. But maybe if big enough it could be possibly something I would put investment into. I personally like the design and wouldn't seek to change it much if it goes on longer-term. The chip would be powerful and likely define the cost parameters, but again each year brings better chips and savings too.

It has emuelec es v4.7 as it's system according to the main menu.

Download that (No clue on which version. Generic?), use Rufus to mount the image file, target the new SD card, and let it install. Then copy over your files. From Googling for this link it seems like if your R36S comes with EmuELEC v4.7 it's a clone. Most people use ArkOS.

You can't just copy files from SD cards 1:1, there's some partitioning and setup they do to get them to work properly which requires you to reimage the SD card.

Biggest feature seems like the screen translation. I've been wondering for like 5 years now why that sort of software doesn't exist yet. Seems like companies don't even want to try and develop the software until translations are instant, but they're pretty fast already.

Interesting. Thanks for letting me know. Anbernic's solution seems to work across the Android OS, though. That's obviously more useful, and it's what I meant when I said I've wondered for years why a similar software doesn't already exist. I guess for phones it's because every app on Android and Iphone is so sandboxed, but I don't see why there isn't some software with real-time machine translation for on-screen text for Windows or Linux yet. I wouldn't even mind something like Anbernic (or Retroarch as I'm now learning) where there's a dedicated translate button or button combo to summon the translation service.

Well ACHUALLY, the Dimensity 8300 in the RG477M mogs the fuck out of the D1100 used in the RP4P. In some cases the 8300 is even preferably to the chipset used in the RP5, at least when it comes to PS2/GC emulation. Where it falls apart is Anbernig's shitty Android builds, Switch Emulation, and the fact that it doesn't have stacked analog triggers for GC/Dreamcast.

People still buy the Miyoo Mini all the time though, so idk why they would even discontinue it in the first place and use the parts for a shittier product. It doesn't even have a headphone jack. I only got a RGB30 and a X28, but the RGB30 is the single worst RK3566 for that reason, the battery percentage keeps locking up and there's a noticeable powered off drain no one can figure out how to stop, which gets significantly worse under mainline kernel to the point it dies in a day from a full charge. I can imagine their faulty design extends to other models, although my X28, for all its crippling faults, has zero battery problems.

Handled is way bigger than I expected somehow, screen and buttons are nice, dpad is ok but too big (or rather, has huge travel course). IUX is garbo but emulation station is alright, at least with rogue os.
It's surprisingly comfortable for me to play tate (maybe because my fingers are both thin and long), if you flip it so that the buttons are on the left side it's fine to have both thumbs on the left and the right index hovering the shoulder button. Played a bit of Valkyrie no Densetsu like this and will probably try to learn the 1cc on it.

2 main gripes I have with it that reviews don't mention at all: it's lukewarm on use (and with the metal body it feels weird to hold), select button cannot be held and pressing left/right because it adjusts brightness which can be an issue for some games

Don't buy unofficial products like these if the person isn't going to be careful with them to some degree. These things are not meant to withstand even simple drops unless they're the $150+ models and even then it's iffy how well the thing stands up to drops. Screen's getting knocked loose, stuff just outright breaking, the cheap plastic cracking, and so on are all real concerns with these devices.
I've read at least two posts on different sites where the screen gained a brand new vertical line after dropping it or buttons straight up stopped working after dropping it.

Buy something meant to be thrown into walls like a 2DS or Switch Lite.

The metal part can slip out of alignment with the plastic. Its oblong or whatever so when it moves out of position it stresses the plastic and cracks it.
I don't think its a materials issue, just QC. Makes sense why the clear ones seems to be better with it, since they're easier to check the position of the hinge during assembly.
So if you develop a crack just drop in a drop of smartphone screen glue and let it cure, should take care of the issue.

Rookie mistake. Worry not, I got you.
First things first, you only need 3 romsets in your device:
>gameboy
>gameboy color
>gameboy advance

Alright good. Now you have a seemingly infinite amount of random games you can start and mess around with when you are on the commode.

Step 2: put on some retro childhood favourites
>"B-but I've already played my favourites"
They're your favorites for a reason. You like to play them. The idea is to fill your device with games you want to play so you'll use it more often. Put in your old favourites

Step 3: pick your 3 favourite genres like RPG or Shooter games. Google "top 10 genre games for X console", legally purchase and backup those, then repeat for Y console. At the end you'll have a good chunky collection of classics you can try out. Well over 100 possibly new games, much easier to pick than 30K.

Step 4: add Ken Griffey Jr Presents Major League Baseball (SNES), Wild Guns (SNES) and Ridge Racer Type 4 (PSX).

You're welcome.

that is not exactly a lie, but it needs specific circumstances for that to happen.
chd is a compressed format, and as such, it needs to be decompressed to be usable, that decompression happens on the fly and if the device in question is not powerful enough to decompress and emulate at the same time, you can even lose performance over it.
3ds in specific is very storage speed starved, that's why it works well there. but you can get the same results using pbp, for example, for ps1.

My PSP is aging and starting to suffer from worn components and a short battery life. I was looking into a replacement for it since I mostly just use it as a way to emulate.

Are there any of these newer handhelds that have an exceptional battery life on them? I'd be fine with something that can only do NES/SNES/PSX/GB/C/A, but I would want something that can last for a very long time on a single charge and hopefully doesn't weigh too much from a huge battery. That was one thing I really loved about my GBA SP, a single charge could last me 10+ hours it seems, my PSP topped out at 5-6 when it was new and now gets about 3 at most.

If you like the PSP form factor, get Trimui Smart Pro, it isn’t ideal for PSP but supposedly is good for GBA and the screen is big enough for 4:3 to still look good and the slightly bigger battery makes up for around the same time as the smaller screen devices

Dunno. May have been a way to pull a fast one on the publishers. “Our gamu vely rarge preaseru rook forwararu to it” or someshit, but nearly every PSX game is loaded with junk data. CHD is lossless, including audio tracks, and you can expect around 50% space savings on average with major outliers on either end. Sometimes you can only save like 5-15%, sometimes bullshit like 75%.

I’m sure there’s some hardware reason also, but I can’t be bothered to look it up.
