>Best retro game you played so far?
Maybe Black Tiger, it's pretty damn fun. It just hits enough things for me to really dig it.
>Disappointements?
Maybe Crossed Swords, but that's probably on me lacking the muscle memory to quickly block high or low to mitigate damage.
>Hopes?
Maybe beat a few more games this year.

I would have to say that the best retro game that I played for the first time this year would be blackthorn. Great game, probably the best cinemaformer in my opinion. Though, my most played game is morrowind.

Megami Tensei games are massive overrated

My disappointments were Chrono trigger and one of the PS1 survival horror ones I can't remember. Chronic across wasn't necessarily a disappointment, I just didn't really enjoy it enough to keep the playing very competent game though. The survival horror one was crap. It had these horrible cutscene trigger moments for everything. I though it was going to be freely traversable 3d, not some fmv of prerendered 3d.

My hopes are that I get more time and energy to continue modding and playing Morrowind and also to mod the millennium falcon into frontier elite.

Let's see.

Finally got the .hack series completely off the backlog... it was... well, something.

Played all the 3d Zeldas, ending on Skyward Sword was bitter sweet as you could really just feel the passion dying by that point and there were a lot of aspects that just weren't cooked to completion. Might be playing the GB/GBC/GBA titles next just cuz it left me hollow.

Finishing up FF9 now which would have been my favorite had it not been for locking the end game gear behind a mini-game that just isnt fun.

I attempted Phantasy Star 2 again but dropped it. I beat the first game but really want to actually play through that series.

Feels like the next games a toss up between reattempting Phantasy Star 2 so I can appreciate Phantasy Star 4 when I get to it, Zelda Ages/Seasons, BoF3, or Klonoa 1 and 2 just for a shorter game to change the pace. Haven't decided yet.

The amount of games I played is absolutely terrifying, even if massively skewed towards early short titles when randomly picking stuff.

Best I've played is still standard stuff, got to replay NFS Porsche and rolled Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

TX-1 was unexpected in 1983, good 2D racer that started the branching track trend. Togepi's Great Adventure is a decent marble game for a fad system. Star Speeder is probably the only thing to recommend on the SCV (bit backhanded). Lady Killer is an arcade porn game with some actually decent, yet simple, arcade gameplay.

Got to play the 5200 and 7800 quite a lot and those are definitely disappointing. Otherwise I'd give it to a Hong Kong original, but can you be disappointed by those?

I hope for less Nichibutsu and Nichibutsu in drag mahjong games. Cancer of the 80s.

My best discoveries this year has been the Saturn. Vandal Hearts, Baroque, but above all else Shining the Holy Ark and Shining Force III. Best games I've played in a long time.

I've also been seriously playing Game Gear games for the first time and there has been some good stuff, especially ShinobI 1 and 2.

>disappointments
I keep trying to get into Master System games only to get pushed back half the times

>discovery
3d golf on gbc, pretty advanced for 8 bit
Lemmings on gb, really fun
Daffy Duck GB, really nice music, its by Sunsoft so no wonder

>disappointment
Mario golf, only 4 courses and the ai is almost impossible to beat legit

>new games
got Zpf on genesis, it put me onto trying other shooters as a comparison so now I'm trying to beat Darius 2 along with Zpf

>hopes
beat BattleToads, the last couples of levels are not that fun really
mod my neo geo controller with a turbo button to beat that 1942 looking shooter
Play more dos games, want to finally beat quake 1, never did back in the day, I'd just shoot stuff for an hour and get bored
mod 2600 joystick to have microswitches and extra button for jump

Phantasy Star 2 is quite tough, it's closer to a dungeon crawler with crazy labyrinths. Prepare that around Climatrol, you will either have to draw maps or download them (unless you're playing the PS2 Sega Ages version). If you're playing the Genesis one, please for the love of God download a patch that removes screen flashing during fights.
Another tip: weapon stats in the game are broken. For this reason, swords actually suck. Initially, guns kind of suck, but they pick up after you start fighting robots, as they ignore enemy defense stat (much like magic does).

>best retro game
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
>best discoveries
Secret of Monkey Island (VGA floppy)
>disappointment
Monkey Island 2 - way too obtuse and the ending sucks
>hopes
I'm working my way through a list of games I need to replay/discover so I'm hoping I'll be done with it before the end of the year.

Its less the dungeon designs and more the weird effects used to obscure their routes that really bothers me. I dunno if it gets better as the game goes but the foreground objects that you are having to peer through and try to make sense of the dungeons is just such a buzz kill. Still, its annoying because I love so much about PS's aesthetics and world. From the designs of the characters, to the pixel art, to the ost. All of it is great but man do the dungeons feel awful... which is such a weird step down from the first game which has aged surprisingly well outside of a couple ambigious ways forward.

>NFS Porsche
First time playing the NFS games. I'm on High Stakesright now, kind of surprised how little content there is.
These games are very short.

>Disappointements?

>Best discoveries?
Ogre Battle 64. Started as a love/hate relationship, but once I finally learned everything I loved it.
>Disappointements?
I finally sat down to play Majora's Mask, but ended up dropping it. A lovely game ruined by the mechanics. Shame, I thought I'd like it more.

>King's Field
I'm about to try this one, or Vagrant Story
Anonymous No.11912031
>>11911907
There's a reason why King's Field often scored low. It's just a really slow game with simplistic combat that devolves to circle strafing enemies that are too slow to turn, or walking in for a hit then backing off for your gauge to refill. Sadly the influx of new Fromsoft fans overhyped some of their older games.

You can always keep racing afterwards if you want and on PC you'd have online play (and mods). They'll get a bit bigger as you go on, but you're not going to run into picrel (not retro) which is the flipside of the coin.
