/vm/ - V.Smile Thread
V.Smile is a 6th gen console and if Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox and GC can be discussed on this board - so can the V.Smile, so let's get a thread going!

>sold more units worldwide than the Dreamcast
>had a longer support window than Xbox and GameCube
>unfathomably based for still using cartridges, when everyone else went to discs
>unironically really nice controller (actually better than the GameCube's)
>not region-locked
>almost 100 console exclusives, more than GC and Xbox
>suitable for kids with no goon slop

some 10/10 games like
>Batman Gotham City Rescue
>Kung Fu Panda
>Mickey's Magical Adventure
>Spiderman Secret Mission
>Superman The Greatest Hero

What did you anons play/are playing on your V.Smile?

I was too old for it, but my parents got one for my younger brother, and I found the reversible joystick design of the controller interesting.

So this thing got 4th place in the console wars, over the Dreamcast, as it sold more units lmfao
No wonder SEGA quit console making, this is embarrassing.

Unironically this was a pretty good system. I'd rather have my kids play this for a couple of hours on the weekend, than give an iPad or a phone to a kid to watch youtube shorts and tiktoks

Not as impressive when you consider the fact that the sale numbers for all of it's variants including handheld versions and the Wii-ripoff V Motion were combined together and it was on the market for twice as long as the Dreamcast yet all that barely got it a 11M compared to the Dreamcast's 9M.

I like collecting these weird ass things when I come across them at thrift stores, but the names all blend together for me unless its a Pico. The ones I found interesting, was the one that had 3D games on it, but used discs instead of carts, but they were like PSP UMD discs in that they were full size, but still were encased inside a protective plastic casing so the read-side was protected. Honestly would have loved that for every disc based system. It also had a standard game pad, but you could pop out the middle section and flip it around so it could accommodate left and right hand players.

The other one that stood out to me, was a hand held that opened up kinda like a clam-shell GBA SP, but I think you were primarily suppose to hold it like a book (or maybe both ways depending on the game). The unique thing about it, was the control scheme. It was a circular groove that you ran your finger over, almost like a rotary phone dial. That one always seemed like something you could do cool homebrew stuff with.

I guess you could also count the Pixter hand-held devices in with these as well since they had their own game cartridges.

That was a Saturn marketing campaign, not Dreamcast
Also, just putting things into perspective. You really think the Dreamcast would not have sold at least 11 million if they had kept it on the market for 6 years? Especially if they made an updated model like a slim version that could also play DVDs or something like they made handheld and motion sensing versions of the V Smile?

>SunPlus SPG200
>proprietary CPU running at 27MHz
>16(?) bit instruction set
Now assuming that the 200 is close to the 220
>2 backgrounds with 256 sprites and blending
>24 channel PCM sound
My god, they sold the ultimate 4.5th gen console at shitty cell phone and video adapter era radio shack.

I really wish there was a big homebrew scene for these machines, just to see what they could have been capable if they hadnt been strictly marketed at educational hardware, or really if devs had just designed regular games on it.

Agreed. Considering that those same SoCs were used in a lot of plug 'n play consoles with solid arcade ports, there's a lot of potential. Same goes for the Casio Loopy since you can still get GCC to target SuperH, and there are a bunch of based frenchmen writing homebrew for their SH4 graphing calculators.

The lady who babysat me had one for her son. It was ok, I remember the Batman and toy story games actually being quite good and as a lefty, the controller fucking rocked.

I have a bad Mandela effect of this thing having Crash Bandicoot despite that really not being possible. like I have only played it 2 or 3 times my whole life but I VIVIDLY remember playing it with this controller. probably just weird little kid brain stuff.

I was thinking of getting one soley to do homebrew, it probably has decent 2D graphics and you can get them super cheap, I just didn't want too much clutter around at the time. There was a video talking about the potential of it, the same guy who made demos for PC FX and Loopy.

>>11913501
I was reading the docs from some guy who wrote an faq about the Loopy, sounded like he would get super triggered if someone tried to port Doom using his documentation. Its CPU is not the SH2 like 32X but an earlier weaker one but it might still be able to do it.

Wasn't there a 2D sonic game that was a platformer on something like this. Almost looks like a DD64 in a way. I've seen newer ones with a og gameboy formfactor.

There are atleast 2 Sonic games on edutainment systems im aware of, but not for the V.Smile. One is based on Sonic X and i think the other may actually be a port of sorts of Sonic 1.

Bro, the problem isn't the the dishonesty of including all the variants under one umbrella. The problem is that the Dreamcast's sales performance is comparable to an edutainment platform to begin with.
