The definitive way to play N64!

Based. Even on my mid-end PC, N64 runs like shit on the accurate settings while the inaccurate ones have tons of artifacts and inaccuracies.

N64 emulation on MiSTer meanwhile is like 99.999% perfect

n64 emulates perfectly on my potato computer. You don't need to lie mister is great anyway.

MiSTer owner here, it's about 99% of the way there but will likely never be 100% unless a crazy breakthrough is found that deals with the RAM timing issue. It only effects a few cutscenes in a handful of games though, and I think one game (Blues Bros 2000) has the gameplay break in specific sections, but I don't know if that was also fixed since then.

It's not going to compete with the accuracy of a real N64, though with a MiSTer you also basically get the equivalent of that N64 having an expansion pak, flashcart, HDMI mod, RGB mod, bluetooth mod, USB controller mod, and infinite memory cards (How the hell has nobody made a proper one for N64 yet like they have for the PS1, PS2, and GC?), and of course it supports dozens of other systems.

If you already have a N64 (Especially if it has an Expansion Pak) and don't care about any of the other mods then just getting a Summercart will be cheaper and more accurate than a MiSTer. If you care about doing a HDMI mod, or an RGB mod (Of which nowadays you would need a specific earlier model N64 and a separate mod since it's no longer built into the HDMI ones) it's going to end up costing more. And if you don't have a N64 already then the N64, Expansion Pak, and Summercart can end up costing as much as a MiSTer. At that point it's a case of how much you care about the handful of games that are slightly off in cutscene timing to put the time and money into it. The HDMI mods require an above novice level of soldering experience.

Basically if you value 100% accuracy above all else and already have a N64 just get a Summercart, if you don't have a N64 already or want HDMI/RGB then it depends if the higher cost is worth it to you to use a real N64 over a MiSTer.

No software emulator runs as well as the MiSTer's implementation so far. For example they all run Knife Edge way too fast while MiSTer does not, and they all have the same DK intro desync as MiSTer.

I just think it's too expensive just so it can "fix" stuff only turbo autists will notice. No, I don't notice the "inaccurate shadows" or any of stuff when I'm actively playing the game. This is like CRTfags showing you how better their games look because of a single screenshot/photo they took on the main menu and then zoomed in a hundred times.

I've never heard of Knife Edge and I don't stare at the intro screen for DK64. N64 emulation on pc is 100% identical to my experience on mister and you would have to lie to point out a single real gameplay difference.

Nope. Not even close. The original N64 is the definitive way to play. MiSTer is useless.

I just tested it on emulation and MiSTER and there is no perceptible difference. What specifically is wrong that affects gameplay? It goes the same speed when you look at it with your eyes.
Anonymous No.11913760

Autistic nonsense with no impact on gameplay. MiSTER is great for n64 on my CRT but I've yet to see a single major difference compared to emulating on my PC

Then you're lying or using a fan hack because it runs in essentially fast forward on emulators. This isn't a subtle "Oh, it's running at 34FPS instead of 30" thing, but running as if you have no speed limit set. I just tested it on every software emulator I have that can run N64 games and the result was the same on all of them, except for one that didn't even run it at all.

>>11913773
Yeah my bad I'm retarded. I went past the opening cutscene and the speed up is noticeable once you are in game. Any other n64 games that are that fucked up on normal emulation?
Anonymous No.11913781
>>11913776
AFAIK none of them are that bad, Knife Gunner is probably the worst example. DK64 has desync in the cutscenes and not even the MiSTer works properly on that one, but it only effects cutscenes from what I understand.

Also the turbo version of the core fixes most of the issues, but not all (DK64's intro still desyncs)

MiSter's emulation runs the game too fast as well, the difference is that a patch is applied to the game when booted to cap the FPS in game.

We had another mister thread where the guy went through all the issues so far w 64 emulation on the mister and knife edge didnโ€™t work according to his list. He was still kind about how much the mister does right but it isnโ€™t perfect and Iโ€™ve seen a lot of conflicting reports on here on how accurate it actually is. Iโ€™ll just wait for my analogue 3d and see if itโ€™s good. I can already emulate everything else on my desktop.
Anonymous No.11913959
>>11913849
Yea see itโ€™s all bullshit. Basically any old rig from the past ten or 15 years can do what a mister can do so why not just hook it up to the tv and grab a controller unless u really like the shitty little box thing it comes in unless thatโ€™s extra $$$.

Above your comment is a series of posts where the core developer talks about how accurate the core is and we have a compatability list with known issues. There's no reason for anyone to be conflicted or not know how the core behaves compared to real hardware.
Anonymous No.11913980 >>11913983

Okay so itโ€™s inferior and really no different than emulation on a computer. Got it thanks.
Anonymous No.11913983 >>11914021
>>11913980
Not inferior, it does things that software isn't and software does things that the core can't with current hardware. The input latency difference is really noticable, even with wireless controllers. I have MiSTer and a PC that can run Ares full speed, I would much rather use the MiSter core over that or any other software emaultion option.

Really, what it needs the most is a dedicated chunk of RAM with it's own controller that would not be butting heads with the RAM for the rest of the system, a lot of the edge cases are in there. A slightly larger FPGA would help too, but we don't need a monster of a device here. There was recently updates about the Replay2, which would likely be powerful enough to not only do this but also Dreamcast. I believe the highest-end model is targeting around a $600 pricepoint if I recall right.
