Most early RPGs had some random sci-fi bit in there somewhere, since most early RPGs were based off of or ripping off D&D, and D&D had some early modules that had sci-fi elements.

It's disappointing most ports turn it into a sky castle (MSX2 doesn't). It was such a standout moment. It was probably done to cut corners by reusing castle assets instead of making a new tileset.
Thinking about it, the Wonderswan was the first port to do it. Maybe it was necessary there to fit the game onto the rom. And because all the following remakes use the WS version as a base (directly or indirectly), the sky castle ended up sticking around.

They changed it? That's bizarre. A certain non retro game seemingly follows up with the original versions sci-fi elements. Does the pixel remaster even make it something other than a space station?

>Why was there a space station with robots in Final Fantasy 1
There was a massive fad in the 80s and 90s to mix scifi and fantasy because of Starwars. In everything. Point and Click, RPGs, Novels, Movies, TV shows, etc. A lot of them fell into obscurity because they made no attempt to seamlessly merge the two concepts in the way Starwars did.

There was a /lit/ guy once who showed that mixing fantasy and sci-fi in literature used to be the norm, long before Final Fantasy and perhaps even Star Wars. In fact, both things were just called "fantasy", there was no "sci-fi" distinction the way nowadays we pretend like both things should no mix.

As for the FF1 remakes they changed it because all remakes have to do something to make the game worse, pretty sure it's the law.

Zenithia is great.
The sky castle in the remakes of FF1 is boring and makes no sense. It barely feels like a castle in the sky, outside of being able to see the sky around, because of course that's not what it was supposed to be. They deleted a lot of things like computers and didn't even replace them with anything. The glass hole in the floor which let you see the planet from above was awesome, instead they replace this by a giant "magic crystal ball"; and the room that revolves around itself makes no sense anymore either: it doesn't revolve on itself because they wanted to do a Zelda style forest maze, it revolves on itself because it's in space (pic related), so now it doesn't make sense anymore.

Might and Magic 1 is about figuring out the world you are on is actually a spaceship colony, and the king is actually an alien convict in disguise. Might and Magic 2 is about chasing that alien convict to another colony spaceship, and stopping him from making it fly into a star. I wanna say the 3rd one is where you finally put a stop to Sheltem(the alien convict). And just about every M&M game has you fighting against robots at one point, as well as being able to acquire and use laser pistols.

Actually in japan, sci-fi styled settings were not only more popular, they came FIRST. Think Astroboy influencing a whole lot of media that takes place in utopian or dystopian futures. Only when D&D showed up did fantasy start taking hold a little but there was still a lot of sci-fi elements in japanese fantasy. You can see it in a lot of games. FF isn't the only one. Chrono Trigger has the future, FF essentially became sci-fi from FF6 onwards (with a skip on 9 I guess), etc

It's been awhile but I remember the concepts about two planets feeling like they could be scifi but it dressed up in pure fairytale and fantasy wrapping. Sometimes fantasy/scifi is like that where with a few different words it could change genre. My favourite example is how Baten Kaitos (made by monolith soft) takes the idea of a disaster happening to earth and people living in space from Xenogears and making it fairytale like and flying islands instead of spaceships or colonies and magic. But even that has mecha.

Final Fantasy 9 also has a transforming robot summon based on one of Sakaguchi's first games which was a mecha game.

>Why was there a space station with robots in Final Fantasy 1
science fantasy was big in the 80's, especially in japan. think star wars. also the lore of the game is that a more advanced society got bombed back to the stone age by the four fiends, the same people who built the airship and the submarine you use also made a space station before getting ganked by tiamat. that's also why you have the chance of running into the WARMECH and eating a fat NUKE if you're unlucky

Ok, so, if we take the whole of Sumerian, the ancient Veda's, the myths of giants, floods, wars, etc. we get...Advanced civ comes to earth, maybe more than one. Wants to colonize, set up a base, explore. Finds gold...not that there isn't more gold out in the system alone, more than 4000x over but, yeah gold (assumptions are now coming forth that gold is actually needed as a catalyst to refine AM). There is some kinda conflict among the sides and a war breaks out, this war can be interpreted as Aesir vs. Vanir, Deva's vs. Asuras, Ennead vs...well, themselves, and finally Titans vs. Olympians, in short, the Titanomachy. This conflict was before we were "made". Established who had rights to run the operations here. Some fuck all kick ass epic space war...based on Von Dieken, Sitchen et al.

After everyone's heels cooled. The working class of the aliens were tired of working, because, fuck, you know...an advanced race of beings who can stride the stars like we can walk from one end of the street to the other apparently fail at making automatons. So, a few of the "gods" find a primate that is close, but not quite the same as them. Based on interpretation, they either decide to Zeus the females or add some of their DNA to them, and presto! The perfect slave race to serve them! They had a bunch of advanced cities around and in between the Sinai and as far East as the Indian subcontinent...which conveniently have all vanished, including the ones in the sky (3 of them according to the Vedas) and that really, really neat one that Solon heard from some Kemet priest that he told his grandson.

Well, based on some things the sand people were going on about, humans were very busy fucking and making more of themselves, in part to mine that rock and...serve (?) and were making way to much noise and making the "gods" nervous. Probably thought there would be another revolt. Anyhow, they decided to flood the planet. Where the amount of water for this came from is debatable, but basically, they figured their chimeras could not swim. However, one "god" did not want the project to go to waste, and convinced Noah, Atrahasis, Deucalion, etc. to build a craft that could ride the storm out. What really happened? Probably Younger Dryas impact near Canada did fuck all to the ice and parts may have struck nearby.

Meanwhile, in the land where people shit in the streets and plot to fuck us all in ways the jews couldn't imagine, had two really long stories called the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, tl;dr, there was this global civilization that consisted of 7 or so really advanced cities (a few in the sky?) that were about to be embroiled in a really nasty war...not as bad as the one that happened before us, that one btw took out the fifth world, ruined Mars and Venus, because they were like Earth or something, closed Saturn's portal, gave it its rings, and a bunch of other bullshit, but hey, you had to be there because it was EPIC, but anyway, this war was about to go down and there were still some "gods" or their kids running around and decided to help one of the two factions. The cause of the war? Someone dropped the baddest "your momma" of all time and that just caused one side to chimp out (Hanuman?) like no other.

So, the war happened with the remains of the tech from the "gods". In fact, some of the tech was so fucking dangerous, it was hidden in a land to the SE of India, Astralaya, (Australia, the oldest of the continents, according to geology, why? Because they say its so flat and featureless, some people say the Earth is flat too, but really don't care because hate flying and don't really see a need to travel too far) these weapons are the surviving left overs from that space war the "gods" had and one of them actually fucking sounds like a lightsaber. Also, personable portable mini nukes, aircars, power armor, mind controlled drones, and one weapon that sounds like a AM bomb. This war lasted 18 days, killed 1.8 billion, destroyed the flying cities (one crashed, causing a giant wave in a land West of India) and the 7 other major cities worldwide and gave us a probably incorrect description of nuclear radiation based on a weapon that sounds more like a curse or spell. Also, we are still recovering from this conflict to this day and are now supposedly learning back those "wonders" we lost.
