If I'm emulating a Nintendo on something with this button layout (where the bottom button is the "primary" button) is the right way to do it by making the right button the "primary" button (since that's where A is on a Nintendo pad)?
Anonymous No.11915602 >>11915673
To use OoT as an example, I map A to A and B to X. If it's a SNES game then it's easy since it has the same button layout, but if it's an N64 or GCN game then you have to just use what feels comfortable. IMO the primary button should just whatever is bottom-center.

the right way is to map the buttons in whichever way you fucking want because (you) are the one holding the controller, not us.

360 made the B&W buttons LB&RB. I don't think there are any games that have B&W have some sort of logic in their placement.

I do it by position of the emulated system's controller. This is because games sometimes line things up according to the position of the button on the controller.

I'm only talking about the "diamond".
Anonymous No.11915667 >>11915697
It depends on the game. For OoT I make the right stick the C-buttons.

I agree but for me having the rightmost button be primary is most comfortable

Oh. You put them where they are positioned and just remember that you're using a controller that's different than the game you're emulating. Most games have buttons in certain places because of ergonomics.

>fires arrows with the analog stick
what a retard.
use the buttons, you have 4 extra buttons to map all c-buttons.

I put A in R shoulder, B in L shoulder, R in R trigger and Z in L trigger (and L in back)

I'm not OP, I use Sony Dualshocks so I don't have those extra buttons but I'd probably do the same with one of those xbox ones. C buttons on the stick is very manageable, even intuitive, you just release the stick to shoot.

There no such thing as a Nintendo

For SNES, load up Super Smash TV. If your face buttons don't fire in the same directions they're arranged in, then you've mapped them wrong.

Japanese read from right to left. Americans read from left (libtards) to right (redpilled). Therefore, you need to make "A" the confirm button, because "A" stands for "America".

I usually go with the following mappings for Xbox Controllers

NES, SNES, GB, GBA, DS, 3DS
B > A
A > B
Y > X
X > Y
L > LB/LT
R > LB/LT

N64
A > A
B > X
C Buttons > Right Stick
C Down > B
C Left > Y
L > LB
Z > LT
R > RB/RT

Gamecube
A > A
B > X
X > B
Y > Y
Z > RB
L > LT
R > RT

I dunno, I don't really have problems with that because I can easily visualise the controller in my head

>I use Sony Dualshocks so I don't have those extra buttons
you do.
assuming cross and square as A and B, the buttons you have free are.
>triangle
>circle
>R2
>select
so, you can assign all C-buttons in oot and mm to a button.
i personally use.
>triangle for C-left
>circle for C-down
>R2 for C-right
>select for C-up
you can still use the right analog for ocarina songs if your brain is too dumb to know which button is which. if you are not playing on ship like you should and activate dpad as ocarina notes.

I don't understand this autistic layout. what's wrong with just using the right analog stick? It never gave me issues.

Or just use a Saturn pad
>A = A
>X = B
>B = C Down
>Y = C Left
>C = C Right
>Z = C Up

I use this controller when emulating something like that.

I never realized that this was probably even easier for Japanese players since not just the crystal positions but also their colors would line up with the face buttons.

DKC 3 was developed in the UK and the PAL SNES used the same design and colours as Japan.

How did Japanese players read the words on the controllers if they didn't understand English?
Anonymous No.11918073
>>11918023
So we just got screwed over in the US.

Why? Did they think kids in the US would not want the controller if the buttons had colors? Come to think about it, the UK SNES also had the same design as the Japanese one too, why was it only redesigned in the US? I would have preferred the RGBY buttons to purple and... lighter purple.

Though I prefer the US design of the console

I've had this qualm with Dynamite Deka on the PS2.

All the QTEs are in Japanese but if you want to configure the buttons you have to understand English, which makes no sense.

For systems that have 4 face buttons in a diamond formation, I find the best practice to be just keeping the cardinal directions mapped consistently, regardless of the labelling.
You might need to remind yourself occasionally what the prompts mean during gameplay, but I'll admit it's a problem when you're playing games that very frequently display the inputs on the screen such as anything with QTEs or input patterns.

It's a matter of preference, but matching the physical controller's buttons to match the software's labels could result in the face button layout being awkward to use.
