Early shmup arcade to home conversions on the NES and PCE didn't have auto fire and it was quickly apparent that pressing a button 5000 times with your thumb is a very different level of strain than tapping a button on a table 5000 times with your index finger. Look at shmups on the Sega Genesis and SNES, all of them have auto fire in the options including the SNES Kiki Kaikai games. Turbo switches on the PCE are just a hot fix for early dev dumb decisions and most games since never bothered with auto fire because they knew you'd have a controller with turbo. There is also option is to buy an arcade stick btw which is why games that had auto fire also had the option to turn it off for a more arcade like experience.
Don't feel bad about using turbo on a shmup if you are playing on a controller, save your thumb the strain.
