Guides + FAQs
Anyone else enjoy looking through old guides on Gamefaqs and similar sites? The authors often put alot of their personality into the guides, making little jokes about the series or characters along the way. They would update them for a few years with new easter eggs or tricks to help players, then stop and presumably move on with life. Some guides are even left unfinished, authors planning ASCII maps of the levels, or comprehensive item lists that just never quite got done before life got in the way. An era of the internet and videogames that is truly passed.

Yeah, there's an earnestness to them that you no longer see for fear of being branded "cringe".
Anyway, here's a pretty good one that fits the mold. Very informative and full of little quips:

I was looking through some old guide on GameFAQs recently and the author was like, I don't know if any of this is correct because I wrote it form memory. Motherfucker, then you shouldn't be writing a guide.

Stuck on a boss, check old FAQs
>Anyway level 5 boss [off-topic rant]; as for what happens in the game [spoiler about what comes 3 levels later]. Anyway this boss is really easy you can do this, especially if you use savestates ;)

Check guide for an old RPG
>game expects you to be level 15 at some point
>guide recommends to grind to 25, which would take roughly 10-15 hours to do
>recommends this insane grinding again and agian throughout the guide
Every single time

Who remembers the shin Megami tensei walkthrough that was updated years later to denounce the game because the author converted to Christianity? I've been looking for it for years

Yeah, it's a time capsule filled with detritus from the good ol' days of gaming authored by dumbass teenagers. Glad gamefaqs is still a thing.

As evidenced by the hordes of insufferable, middle-aged assholes on this board whose vocabularies consist mostly of the words "zoomer", "retard", "faggot", and "reddit"?

He said there "used" to be. It's not the case anymore because of zoomers who have zero reading comprehesion, like in your case, so there is no point in using words they wouldn't understand, which inevitably makes us fall back to calling them (You) retards.

I used to buy games then just rawdog them blind and had fun. Now the first thing I do when playing a game is look up a list of missables so I can 100% the game even though I don't really care and it's not a fun way to play.
Anonymous No.11921283
I used to download all the FAQs on GameFAQs for the games I was playing. But now I prefer reading wiki for games I'm playing. I even contribute to some wikis.

always do your first playthrough blind

if for some reason you're so autistically captivated by the game that you feel a need to 100% it, then do a second playthrough

An excerpt from a Morrowind character creation guide that has stuck with me for over 20 years:
>[Orcs] are, however, butt-ugly, so if you're
a vain player you might want to play a Redguard instead (unless you're a vain,
racist player, in which case play a Nord, and get some therapy.)

I remember reading a guide for windwaker where it mentioned that the guy who sells you the sail is iceman from megaman 1 and that tingle tuner doesn't allow to bomb tingle at all, so it is broken.

To this day, I still refer the guy as Iceman

I used to be like you, then I just stopped doing things I didn't enjoy in games. Dragging out every fight in a FF so I can steal from the enemy? Fucking. Boring. I just stopped caring. Oh no, I missed an item that could make an already piss easy game even easier! Who fucking cares?

In my defense, the only gun we owned actually took clips, and RE2 had its handgun bullets in the boxes.

Mainly for fighting game or if I get stuck since I usually don't want spoilers. A fun thing to do is copy the text file onto a floppy and view it on a retro computer such as an Atari ST which supports pc formated discs.

I've made a few that are on gamefaqs. I wrote my first guide for Hunk in Resident Evil 2 at the age of 12, but it was for a fan site.
Honestly I've dabbed in a bit everything, wrote guides, made levels/mods/romhacks for games, dumped some games, contributed to tcrf and mobygames, etc I don't know what I'm still doing on /vr/ to be honest this place used to be people like me but since the attack now it's just retards and shitposters

The oldest original guides are from 95 at most because that's when the site began. There are guides going as far back as 1991 scraped from elsewhere: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/pc/564664-the-adventures-of-willy-beamish/faqs/1906 The faqs/* part is the order in which they were added at some point.
