Also, I just started remastered wc1, so far feels good.

Do you think the UED will be returning if StarCraft ever gets a sequel? The force they sent in Broodwar was only a very small expeditionary force, and they didn't even bring their most advanced technology, yet still managed to do extremely well.
Makes me wonder what a full scale invasion of the sector would be like, they'd probably steamroll everything.

Not counting wow expansions, there were a few games in there like Ghost that got stuck in development hell and were canceled. Ghost was a huge running joke bc they announced in 2002 and got around to formally canceling it in 2014.

That Warden campaign is dog shit. Having to island hop with boats and fighting OP Naga. I beat like 4 missions legit I started using cheats fuck that game. You can just bring your OP battleships to fight on shallow water and wreck their base, very easy once you realise this

There is only one mission on TFT that is genuinely bullshit IMO is the Kael one where you start in the middle island and have expansions at the beginning, mostly because you have to siege a very reinforced base with dogshit blood elf units, unless there's something I'm missing. King Arthas (first UD mission) also kinda sucks if you don't know the proper strategy, which is counter-intuitive

I've been working on that. The hardest mission by far was Night Elf, the one where you have to get passed the orc base to get the horn before the undead make it to Malfurion. You have extremely little time on Hard, it's almost unfair.

I don’t remember what I did there I beat it first try but there were only 2 trees left! And the last NE mission is super easy. Immediately get the other two expansions, build 5 total ancients of war, and set rally point inside Human base inside the wall just north of the choke point. Spam Tranquility ultimate every engagement and mass archers. Literally that easy! For Orc base I made 3 protectors and 3 moo wells at a choke point before the base and held there like 3-5 waves. By the time the Orc base fell there was less than 5 minutes left. Don’t lose a hero and it should be easy.

This is a pretty good strategy for the final NE mission. Lots of people (and me, when I first played the campaigns) default to building mass towers to hold back the waves, but demons and chaos damage burn through those way too easily to work well. Using ancients, wells, and cheesing the choke points in terrain is smart.

On another note, Blackthorne is awesome. I was expecting some Prince of Persia knockoff, but it goes way beyond that. I’m playing the 32-bit version on Blizzard Arcade, and it’s solid.

If someone stepped up to make /cbg/ proper there wouldn't be any issues, but you lot are the ultimate begging choosers.

I love Starcraft, Broodwar, WC2, WC3, and this was supposed to be a place where people can enjoy talking about Blizzard when it was good. You can still enjoy Brood War today, and Warcraft 2/3 today on modern PC's, but apparently that's completely unforgivable.

I think a lot of that is either because they don't play/try RTS. or are simply shit terrible at them and blame the game.

I feel RTS can go back into style these days since MOBA's aren't the big new thing they used to be and RTS are just really cool and fun to play. People just don't want to develop the muscle memory to multitask.

I still think War3 is the best entry-gate into RTS since heroes make managing things really easy compared to something like AoE2.

I’ve posted a few times in these Blizz threads since the original /cbg/ implosion, and my positions remains: just talk about the games, I don’t care about remaster or retro wow discussions, they’re fine; it keeps things moving and alive. But now we’ve devolved to the point where autismos have spent most of this thread dissecting archived posts to prove someone lied about some irrelevant nonsense, etc. If this general also dies, I may use the op image and make one myself. Maybe grooby and the og OP will come back once they realize we can just ignore the sperglings.

To me, AoE is the best entry-level rts experience because it has minimal play variables and moves at a glacial pace compared to anything by blizzard or Westwood (maybe Generals is the exception). You have ample time to learn the mechanics and grow an economy without having to worry about constant harassment. The AI is pretty simple. The only downside is you can get locked into a preferential strategy instead learning how to handle rushes, waves, serious resource limitations, and different micro tactics, all of which more sophisticated rts games will use on you—I like building the economy, so it was easy for me to get lulled into turtling a lot; StarCraft broke me in the beginning.

I wish I could talk about HoTS and Diablo III, but not retro. Bump.

A year or so after D2R's release I started writing a hero editor for it but the .d2s format is a bit of a clusterfuck and I gave up not long after getting to the items part.
Everything else worked, but even after cheating by reading the source code of other editors, I kept having wrong bits in a bunch of places and couldn't figure out what was going wrong.
I'm really annoyed that the most popular editors now require you to be connected to the internet and upload your file to their server. Thankfully not all of them.

I launched 1.14d to play on battle.net and it bricked my cactus. I can't launch any other version now. I can't be bothered troubleshooting but I probably need to just delete some of the 1.14d specific files out of my cactus launch folder. idk. shit is real weird these days.

but back to hero editors, zonfire (or mastadex or hero editor whatever you want to call it) has lots of bugs too although it's compatible with versions that launched after it. I also tried adjusting its parameters to work with plugy increased stash size and it can't really handle that. I just like to make infinite refilling arrows, bolts, and tomes for my characters.

I disagree. sc2 is probably the easiest one to get into. heroes and upkeep and exp farming are bloat mechanics in wc3. something is possessing me to learn an rts but I don't really feel like jumping into a 20 year old game like sc or aoe, and stormgate is still not in a playable state and may never be. it also looks like a worse version of sc2, and I'm not particularly fond of their art.

I don't know enough about aoe though as I've only played the campaigns or random multiplayer maps against computers 20 years ago. same with stuff like red alert, total annihilation.

I've been playing Warcraft 2 and it's absolutely KINO. I skipped over this gem back in the day as my path into Blizzard games was

it has been a good experience leveling as nova. getting to 12 started to get rough because I didn't farm the tower, I just kept pushing, but with a few points in static, frost nova, and the occasional melee kill, it wasn't too bad. finishing act 1 and progressing act 2 was a breeze. the only real problem area was the act 2 sewers, all those burning archers wreak havoc on a weak little sorceress. just finished looking for baal man, and the fight went way better than I expected, I've forgotten how op static can be. hopefully I don't have too much of a problem with the blow darts and souls in act 3. my resists are still awful.

I don't know if it's just because I haven't played in a while, or because I was using this setting, but I did not like this. my skills felt delayed, it's like in DotA 2 sometimes I can't cast the skills as quickly because it's quick cast on key up instead of key down, and it feels like Diablo 2 is using key up and that I can cancel the cast sometimes by clicking to send another input before it casts. back in the day I was very good at scrolling the wheel very precisely to the skill I wanted, and didn't use hotkeys other than to have my wheel scroll through them, but it's like modern mice make their scroll wheels for little girls or something because they offer no resistance or tactility to the clicking of the wheel, so I don't think I can scroll as precisely, regardless, I think it will establish bad habits against stuff like namelocking. and holding or spamming a key on the keyboard instead of having that hand available to micro your potions didn't feel great. I have thousands of hours in MOBAs, MMOs, and other ARPGs, that all use quick cast and skills bound to the keyboard, but it just feels off in Diablo 2. I think it's because in other games your skills have cooldowns so it doesn't feel as awkward to use the keyboard to cast them.

I'm very curious what other anon's experiences and opinions of the Quick Cast Skills setting is.

When I was a kid I thought Act 5 was mind blowing because there were barbarians out on the battlefield.
I remember reading that there were originally plans to have many more NPC interactions in the world, for example, unused voice lines indicate that you were meant to come across rogues who are in the middle of fighting Blood Raven when you arrive.
I can see why that type of scripted event was dropped, but I wish they'd had more people roaming the outdoor world. I'd always try to escort all the barbs to the end of the first outdoor area until they bug out on the wall.
Regarding the music, the whole act has an entirely different tone. I wish they had given these guys more time and money so that Act 5 could have taken it's rightful place before Act 4. It's dumb that you play Diablo and the final boss is his brother, who is a gay Mr Burns spiderman.
