I don’t like most shmups for the same reason. The ones I do like usually let you play as 3 or more character/ships, have alternate levels/branching story modes, and ideally have a few different ways to attack. otherwise you are just playing the same game the same way using the same strategy every time. I think it’s really boring. and it actively discourages playing a title enough to get genuinely good at it.
It doesn’t have to be black or white I don’t like open world games. I’ve never beaten one. Shinobi gets compared frequently to ninja gaiden black for good reason. I appreciate that ninja gaiden black (the only one I liked, I probably liked shinobi more than NG2 or ng3) gives you so many options in how you play. Playing again on hard or very hard mode? Cool you start the game with the nunchucks or no staff ignore the sword if you like. have you played enough to get really good at the game? Cool you can play it completely differently using suboptimal strategies while still having fun having a fresh challenging experience. many bosses have multiple viable ways to fight them. NGB has like 10 weapons to pick from. Most having a large enough move list you can pick what moves you personally enjoy using most. Basically it rewards going back and doing it differently to learn more about the game every playthrough. it’s rewarding to replay. also new enemies on harder difficulty modes.
I personally feel shinobi Ihas too many compounding choices that add up to make it a bland game. Your sword acts as a timer forcing you to play fast. you basically have to use the tate system to beat the bosses within your time limit bypassing or overshadowing the games combat system. not enough attacks for only one weapon. game has great platforming but doesnt let you explore at all. a few alternate paths in a ninja game make sense. just to remind you that youre a ninja. Could have made the missions fun to replay taking different routes.
