Whose blood was this, anyway?

I think in the backstory it was a researcher who was bit and bled out by the fireplace

Kenneth J. Sullivan. Likely attacked by a zombie, and then chased into the room next door where it over took him. Zombies know how to open doors.

It's not in Chris' scenario in the original game, you only find the blood with Jill and Barry.
I've always taken this to mean that Chris had somehow made it into the dining hall before the others and had defended himself from a zombie before fleeing (the gunshot we heard). Wesker left to find him before Jill and Barry could, and he did before betraying him, knocking him out, and throwing him in the lab prison. Barry's like about it being Chris's blood is probably some sort of hint as to who caused it but it was lost in the translation and voice acting.
In REmake it's just part of the prerendered background rather than a bloodstain rendered on top.

For Chris, the gunshot comes from Kenneth.

I always thought the same: the closest dead body to that room is the one of kenneth, so for sure the blood is from him.

It has a needlessly complex event system, so that each playthrough as a kid felt really fresh. Occasionally I'd get a "wait, what? I've never seen that!". A lot of things just felt really random. Recently some youtubers have documented every single event trigger.

The remake streamlined everthing.

Probably but it was never nicely accessible. It wasn't on gamefaqs or any fan site, and most of them are pretty pointless. As a teenager, I would randomly get new scenes, and never knew why. Or years later I'd watch a youtube clip of something I've NEVER gotten in RE before.

For instance, I had no idea that Rebecca could die in the mansion. It literally didn't seem possible but I saw some cutscenes on youtube. It felt like some cut content or something. Turns out, the trigger is whether you ask Becky to follow you or not. It seemed random to me and pointless so I never made the connection.

If you say yes, she follows you into the guardhouse and presumably stays there before venturing to the lab. If you say no, she stays in the mansion and then gets surrounded by hunters and may die.

I think there is one on PC, or at least itwas in the works

Anyway swapping the model files so you can play as whoever you want is super easy to do both in the PC an DS versions. In the DS version you can even play as the alpha team guys because the models are used in the shitty mini game

I mean there's a mod to slap the DS models onto the PC version and it honestly looks pretty great. Getting to use them with the normal PC version and everything makes it feel practically native since the DS had to work with such low resolutions in mind.
