>navigating desert area is pure trial-and-error meaning it could potentially take dozens of hours to get past
What were they thinking?

you'd ask your parents permission to get on aol and look it up, or pony up the cash for a strategy guide

I got the game around the same time as one of my friends and we shared a lot of tips. I was stuck at the desert for a few days but he figured it out somehow and told me. I was ahead of him up until that point and overtook him again after he told me. Much later on he became a bit cagey and stopped helping out as much. I mentioned I needed to figure out how to find the other digi-egg and he said he knew where it was but he wasn't going to tell me. This continued for a week until I found it myself. I assumed he'd quit playing because even then the game was a complete chore. I later found out his mom had sold his PlayStation and all his games for drugs.

I kinda with I hadn't found the other digi-egg because the circuit boards are a horrid mess. It took years for someone to figure out how they're connected and stick it in an understandable guide. IIRC the PAL version has a whole post game with even worse circuit boards.

I haven't played this but always wanted to as a kid, but never got very far.
As an adult, I've beat all kinds of SMT/Wizardry/Etrian Odyssey games, so I'm not really put off by it being confusing or cryptic.

Is this worth playing? Googling circuit board maps makes it seem like a chore of chores.

You don't ever really need to go to the circuit board from what I remember, it's just meant to be a fast travel system but it fails spectacularly

Maybe there's a couple places that require it to be reached but that's it

This game is a horrid backtracking padded mess.
At least the music is great.

How does 3 stack up to 2? I played 1, loved it, and then played 2 and found it boring.

I reached Amaterasu as an ESL kid with no internet or guides so that bit can't be that hard

i feel like i've already said this, but me and my best friend used to rent DW2003 from Blockbuster every weekend. We'd go to the library to print shit. he's dead now and we never finished it.

anyways, it's the best jrpg ever.
