The problem with VMUs had nothing to do with people "not getting it" and everything to do with the fact that they needed two button-cell batteries that barely lasted a few months and made it emit an irritating beep every time you turned on your Dreamcast if it's batteries were dead. Nearly everyone I know with a DC including myself had VMUs with dead batteries because they would die so quickly and those batteries weren't exactly as cheap as a 20 pack of AAAs.
Yes, the PocketStation used button cells too, but just one, it lasted longer, and it didn't make irritating noises every time you powered on your PSX with one that had dead batteries plugged in. Also it was an extra accessory, not the standard memorycard. In the case of the Dreamcast the VMU-less memory card was basically the exrta accessory to the VMU.
SEGA always was stupid about battery usage in their devices. The Game Gear had the same issue with how fast it drained batteries, the Saturn had a button cell that powered the clock AND the internal memory, which died quick too and took your saves with it. You would think they would have learned to either find a way to make the VMU power efficient or make it a bit bigger so it can house AAAs instead or something. Hell, the fucking SegaCD had a RECHARGABLE button-cell in it, why didn't they go that route with the VMU?
