Why was the GBA only around 3 years before Nintendo put out the DS? That's a pretty short lifespan. I thought the GBA was a big hit.

PSP had Nintendo anxious. Like how GBC was a reaction to NGPC and Wonderswan Color

It's not like they immediately dropped it, they literally put a GBA into the DS. There was still a ton of first party games made up until like 05-06

The PSP happened. Recall that Nintendo was getting ready to release an actual successor to the Game Boy around 1997 with hardware somewhat approximating the GBA, but then Pokemon happened and Nintendo realized they could just do the bare minimum and so released a refresh with color graphics so that it wouldn't look too out of date against the competition, and that was enough to maintain their iron grip on the market for a couple more years before finally coming out with a real successor. There was no way they could ignore Sony after the walloping they received on the console side, though, so they were forced to respond with new hardware of their own.

it was the other way around, it last until 2006-2007 thanks to licensed games and being the 6-11 years old designated handheld console.

There are 190 Game Boy Advance games released in the year 2004.
There are 185 Game Boy Advance games released in the year 2005.
There are 130 Game Boy Advance games released in the year 2006.
There are 37 Game Boy Advance games released in the year 2007.

They tried to sell the press on some nonsense about the DS being a "third pillar" and that they weren't actually replacing the GBA. No one really believed it though.

That was just preemptive cope in case the dual/touch screen gimmicks didn't take and it flopped, at which point they would've probably hurried out a slightly stronger traditional handheld marketed as the next in the Game Boy line. They dropped that line very quickly once it became clear it would be a success.

It wasn't too uncommon considering how the GBC also lasted 3 years before the GBA came out. Also the PSP was right around the corner and it mogged the GBA so hard hardware wise that they felt the need to rush something else out to go up against it.

3 1/2 years. That said, the PSP was in development. Had Nintendo not put the DS out by 2004, the comparison between Nintendo and Sony's handhelds would've been far more dire. The DS was a gimmick that Nintendo was gambling on, even going so far to say the Gameboy brand wasn't completely dead just in case the DS was a failure, but it gradually became very successful throughout 05-07 and the PSP on the otherhand couldn't keep up.

The DS wasn't popular until the Lite came out. Until then, every kid I saw in public had a GBA SP.

The PSP's existence and the rush for the DS definitely hurted certain GBA game developments and sales like pic related.
It was literally right around the corner for the DS and promotion for it was small.

Not even a DS bundle to promote the game.
