Origin of Sakura's little dance
it's clearly rotoscoped from something, but I can't find where.

It's suspiciously similar to Axl Roses' dances from his 90s music videos, but I haven't found a 1:1 exact match yet .

Proof they've used rotoscoping in their games. This is also legally a grey area but no one's going to complain about 30 year old games.

It's rotoscoped with some minor tweaks. Look at Elena's feet: they make zero sense because it's copying a woman with high heels.

Rotoscoping is literal tracing of the figure over a still. The sprite here is referenced frame by frame, not traced, this is not uncommon in animation. The proportions are different, the horizon line is lower, the figure is heavily stylized.

It's definitely rotoscoped, rotoscoping doesn't have to strictly adhere to the underlying model. Some of the most famous instances of rotoscoping in early Disney animation feature rubber house ghosts lol.

If it were just referenced then the timing would be different, this was roto'd then put closer on model after.

Lol. Just imagine all the trouble animators had directing all sorts of animals - never mind dinossaurs and dragons - so they could literaly trace their frames to put on those outstanding old school rotoscoped animations.

90's Capcom had an obsession with Guns 'N' Roses. It's across almost all their games but there are a lot more obvious references in the Mega Man X series.

Thats not rotoscoping, thats just referencing the timing. You can tell because the poses end up being more elaborate and have more pop while a normal roto'd animation feels too "real" and smooth but not in a good way

But anon, that is what rotoscoping is intended for. And to better reference complex perspectives and anatomy. The person "tracing" is actually an artist who have freedom to use the referenced frame as he wish, on an actual drawnboard.

It's this or you believe oldschool animator found dinossaurs and dragons to trace on their rotoscoped animation.

Anon please, go watch a ralph bakshi movie and tell me its on the same level as a renaissance disney film, video ref is just a tool not the end goal. Think of mocapped games vs hand animated ones, you still can use reference but they results are night and day

>go watch a ralph bakshi movie

I watched Fire and Ice, which is also rotoscoped, so? The frame referenced is just what it is: a reference for an artist to drawn whatever detail he want. As low in detail as a Bakshi animation or as high as a Disney one.

It just happens that you are clueless about what you're talking and felt to the "rotoscooping animation is just tracing characters" meme.

Pic related: a non dwarf dancing in a rotoscoped animation.

> tell me its on the same level as a renaissance disney film

Yeah, you sure seems to know what you are talking about. Lol.

>Better than ultra realism but every character filtered through it looks so uncanny.
It's the mixture of vivid, cartoonish aesthetics with somewhat realistically-proportioned characters and a subtly sexual vibe. It's like those videos on youtube of weird norwegian people acting our adult situations in childish ways while wearing bizarre outfits and eating food, with the cameras constantly zooming in on their mouths and exaggerated facial expressions. Both give me the same vibe, and it seems overtly sinister and malicious.

I've dabbled here and there. But i can't find anyone else caring. It was always jarring to me since it looks very 3D when the rest of the game is very flat, so like Elena's win pose I believe it was taken from something.

That is basically creating a visual script with skilled actors so you can also get ideas for poses, anatomy, facial expressions, and acting itself instead of trying to have animators just do it all themselves

Rotoscope is just capturing the movement, not tracing.
As in you can choose to rotoscope a snake dancing out of a human reference. You can rotoscope a lemon being sliced with a katana and animate a human head. Or a slim jim wiggling and turn it in to a penis. None of that is tracing, you know what tracing is, if it was tracing we'd call it that, it's called rotoscoping because it's a different thing, it's about capturing the movement, not the form. Obviously you can rotoscope and also trace it, but don't make me explain the distinction here. The only thing you can't rotoscope is a PS3 game.

Anonymous No.11938959

The distinction being made is that one involves drawing directly on top of source video, which is what is typically meant when somebody says something is rotoscoped, while video reference implies that the footage serves as a visual aid, while the acutal image is drawn to the side, and not directly on top of the footage. And yes, rotoscoping can range from drawing exactly over the contours, to using the footage as a loose guide for drawing other forms (on top of the reference). Rotoscoping, no matter the style, will GNEERALLY result in a more fluid, less animated, and often more realistic style of motion which, for people who know what rotoscoping is, often jumps out, especially when used in conjunction with more traditional cartoon animation techniques (like some Bakshi films). Of course every example is different, but when somebody says something was rotoscoped, they typically mean the animation was drawn DIRECTLY ON TOP of the video frames.
