I recommend you to play the """"retro"""" game over the non-retro one since you're asking on the retro board
Anonymous No.11932305 >>11932326
The remake initially seems like an honest effort to modernize a classic but it manages to fail in some really important areas.

>Gameplay
The game has turned insanely easy. You get +5s in any attribute you want, no matter what class you play as or what skills you've been using. By level 15 you'll already have 2 maxed attributes which is insanely good. The distinction between Major and Minor skills might as well be a fashion choice as now Minor skills also contribute to level ups which makes leveling really fast and futher renders the class system pointless. Weapon swings downgraded to what i'd call "combos" For example, instead of being able to slash away at a boar with your dagger, now your character does 2 slashes and a stab, even if you clicked more than 3 times. The worst offender in this is two-handed weapons which are locked to a couple of swings only and it sucks ass. There's also smaller stuff like power attacks with certain weapons having extra effects like bleeding or giving you Shield instead of the old stuff like knockback, disarm or paralyze, giving The Lord and other signs huge buffs. The only objectively good gameplay change was making daggers scale with Agility instead of Strength which makes it more appealing for ninja characters.

>UI/Quality of Life
There ARE some neat things like disabling the zoom-in character faces while in dialog, showing both the shop and the player's inventories at the same time, colored icons on the map but there's also a handful of fuck ups. Items and spells are somehow not properly sorted like in the original. You browse through your inventory all items tab and you'll find both potions, armor and gems all mixed together, not grouped seperately at all, this is a mess and inexcuseable. There's also a few other UI related things that escape me at the moment but in general its one step forward, half a step back.

>Graphics/Audio
Adding more voice actors was unexpected but really welcome, it really brings new life to dialogs. Some SFX also change, nothing crazy but welcome still i suppose. Graphics wise the game looks gorgeous, besides the stupid ass color filters one can mod out, the game looks faithful to the original and even improves upon certain parts, making them look more immersive. Caves and dungeons really shine in this and look very detailed due to how they're modelled but also thanks to a few details like bugs crawling around, sheen on surfaces etc.

My personal verdict is that while on some parts, the remake is spot on, it really failed on others and its a rather different experience in comparison to the original. The remake is for modern audiance so, take that as you will. Wish someone ports the new voice acting to the original one day.

Original has charm out the arse, and unlike the remaster doesn't look like every other AAA game released in the last few years (thanks UE5!!!).
Also I suspect this is not actually retro either way.

Oblivion has full voice acting and built for controller support so it translated to modern audiences with minimum effort. They just harnessed UE5 around the gamebyro engine, tasked some french video game art asset making studio to make stuff and shipped it for big $
a Morrowind remaster would take a ton of work and Daggerfall remaster would require making a whole new game (that isn't very good)

The remaster could have been a lot worse bit as it is, there's absolutely no reason to play it over the original especially when it's 100gb while the original game is like 7 or so.

That would require a lot more tuning to make either remake more palatable for their current audience. Oblivion is basically "proto-Skyrim".

It's a remaster, not a remake. It's relatively modern, so it just needed upgraded graphics.

Leveling, armor/weapon design, using UE5 are just the 3 biggest issues.
To go further they changed the some of the VA's but then also kept some of the original ones leading to some weird ass sounding actors that feel extremely out of place. They introduced new bugs (while also leaving in almost all the old ones).
Like on it's own merits this game is extremely middle of the road, but in the context that it is a remaster it's more expensive for an objectively worse experience, anything you would like from it's "QoL" changes could already be done through mods for a game that takes up 10x less hard drive space. It's just a pointless purchase to make when you have a better, cheaper, and far more enjoyable experience right around the corner.
Also worth mentioning I had more crashes in a single playthrough of the remaster than my entire time playing turbo modded oblivion for the last 15 years.

Nobody plays Oblivion for the gameplay, the story, or the graphics.

Oblivion is only a classic because of it's pure soul artystyle, it's hilarious AI jank, voice acting, mods and sidequests.

Remake completely ruins it. You will be wondering why the fuck people even like this shit, because oblivion is a fucking awful game. The remaster sucks all the soul out which is the reason the game clicked with people.

I said the artstyle was soul, but yeah now you mention the graphics have aged pretty well. The graphics look like shit, but there's something about the sheer ambition that reminds you in 2006 Oblivions graphics were pretty mindblowing and revolutionary and pushing Tech at the time. The remaster graphics are impressive, but they aren't pushing anything, it's just the same high fidelity UE5 slop that every modern game has now

It was in the context of consoles, oblivion came out when the 360 was still fresh, and for consoles, it was an impressive game. PC players already had their mind blowing titles, but most of those never got or got a console port way after. Like I said, the most technically impressive thing would be the HDR, which personally I barely noticed, but everyone else seems to have found it impressive.

The "leveling" problem is the fact the level scaling in Oblivion is fucked. You can easily overlevel yourself without being strong enough to actually fight the creatures and if you go over level 25 or so the difficulty of the enemies becomes ridiculous to the point that you need to start doing a lot of cheese to fight them effectively.
The other side to that is HP gained from endurance is not retroactive meaning to get the most benefit you should build and level your character to maximize endurance early, this was changed in the remaster to be retroactive. There's plenty of other more minor issues with the leveling system such as random bandits wearing daedric armor, low "tier" mobs disappearing entirely from the world.
The remaster did not fix any of these issues, it simply applied a bandaid to the easiest part to fix, the best mod I've seen to fix most of these issues was "Level Scaling Unclusterfucked" or something to that effect, it also has issues but it's far better than the base game.

So it looks like they tried and failed to fix two of the bigger complaints about the game (level scaling and combat feeling more like wiping your sword on people). I can't say I'm really mad about that since the jank was part of the game's charm.

Speaking of graphics, the original is playable at 4k native even on a now potato spec 4GB RX570. I'd recommend trying it since the added detail can be pretty neat.

These issues come from how you make your character, if you make a combat focused character that levels with combat you will probably be fine, god forbid you choose a non-combat major because it ain't hard to level alchemy early on and push your character to level 8 before you've done anything.
To say "lol never happens to me" is completely irrelevant, you could also just drop the difficulty to nothing and never have these issues. It's a poorly designed leveling system combined with aggressive level scaling that results in a shittier experience even if you're still blasting through the game.
I've played this game with about every class you could make and I can say that there's always an easy option to trivialize the game but that doesn't mean the system isn't complete shit.
I mean shit nothing is stopping you from grinding half the skills to 100 before you even leave the prison at the start of the game. Does that mean it's a good idea?
