What's the best way to start with Megaman? Originals? Are there any other remakes besides the genesis one? I mostly just want to get to Battle Network but understand the references.

Just play them in order, original versions. Even the worst ones are still great games. The first one is probably the hardest and if you can get past that, the others will seem easy. I wouldn't bother with Wily Wars (remake of 1-3 for the Genesis) or Powered Up (Chibi style remake of MM1 for the PSP) until you play the original versions. Enjoy the ride.

Original Mega Man > Mega Man X > Mega Man Legends > Mega Man Battle Network > Mega Man Zero > Mega Man ZX > Mega Man Star Force

Man it's weird how people who browse /vr/ even ask questions like that, it's not like Mega Man is a fucking RPG/action-adventure series from the 80s, they are basic platformers made for Japanese children, just start with 1
Anonymous No.11933250 [Report] >>11933389
Start with either Mega Man 2 or Mega Man X. Those are the easiest and most accessible. Then, if you enjoyed those, play the NES games in order.

What are you being insecure about? Mega Man is like a rock band with dozens of albums across decades and spanning entirely different styles. It's as valid a question as asking how to get into David Bowie's or Pink Floyd's music or something.

What I'm trying to say is that even the first game is still really easy to get into for someone who's never played a Mega Man game so if you want to get into the series there's no reason NOT to start from the very beginning

Only the first two or three NES games are really worth playing

You *could* do that and it would be a valid choice, but MM1 is also janky, has shitty music, boring levels, is short, and missing a lot of bells and whistles that later games added. You could just as easily make a case for starting with one of the later games to ease you in.

>but MM1 is also janky
Never understood why people say this honestly, it's kinda no different from 2-6? I don't know I genuinely don't see why it's supposed to be jankier than the rest of the NES lineup

11 is a great starting point but it's also one of the best games in the series so playing the others may leave you disappointed, so start with 2 and then just go in order
the other subseries that aren't rpgs have a connected story (except maybe legends? idk i never played that one) so you should play those in order though

2. If you liked 2, then play 3. If you really liked 3 and thought it was better than 2, then play any of the others. If you thought 3 was a downgrade, move on to X. Play the first X game, then 3. Skip 2.

Legends is sort of an 'epilogue/aftermath story' to the entire franchise but I don't think it references any of the other games aside from some small nods

Don't listen to them OP, don't start with 2. Rockman 2/MM2 on Hard aka the actual game is just as hard as the first game and 3-4 are even more challenging. Don't be afraid just play 1

>Battle Network can be enjoyed standalone from the original Classic series. Occasionally a character with the same name and theme appears, but that's about the extent of it.
>The Genesis remakes of 1-3 are not recommended over the NES originals, they are basically ports but not made well.
>The Gameboy games 1-4 are not exact ports of the NES games, but they do reuse and remix a lot of previous concepts while also sprinkling in new types of traps and enemies occasionally. The fifth Gameboy game is a fully unique title unlike the previous four.
1 is hard.
Either start with it and swap off of it if you feel like you're banging your head against a brick wall, or start with 2 from the get-go and play through a few more games in the series to get some experience before making your way back to 1.

Ok so 1 for the nes seems to be the best option, I'm not that interested in playing the X series unless it's also referenced in the BN games and I don't see the point of starting with 2 just because it's better just to "downgrade" to 1 next.
I was hoping the remakes were good.
>>11933308
Dunno seems like that game happens after they were done with BN.

>Battle Network can be enjoyed standalone from the original Classic series. Occasionally a character with the same name and theme appears, but that's about the extent of it.
Yes that's the sort of references I like, I played BN1 a long time ago and knew a few big name robots like Gutsman were from previous games but no idea who everyone else was supposed to be.

Also I didn't knew there were Gameboy games.

You start with 2, with no guides or help with the exception of having an older brother/cousin of some sort who has played it before and you can ask them for tips, watch them play it and copy. That’s how we did it when we had to walk up hill both ways to school and that’s the proper way. Plus 2 is all anyone played anyway, I’m utterly convinced the series ended there and every other game is just some weird psy op.

Play them in release order. Mega Man 1 to 5 on NES, then Mega Man X. Then Mega Man 6. Then Mega Man X2. Then Mega Man 7. Then Mega Man X3. The Game Boy games you'll have to add in-between. Someone will have to correct me if the order is wrong. I recommend that you do not play the original Mega Man games from 1 to 11 unless you have played X, Zero, and ZX in between though.

What everyone said but I recommend the Complete Works version at least for MM3 because on the NES that game lags a lot and it's extremely annoying, while Complete Works fixes the slowdowns. That was the PSX release which I think only exists in Japanese, but it got ported to the PS2 for the Anniversary Collection in English.

You really think that 4 is the easiest? I don't know why but I find it to be pretty hard, I'd say it's the hardest numbered classic MM games except for 9

>You really think that 4 is the easiest?
Right after posting I looked it up because it's been a few years since I last played these games and I first played them in order back on my PS2 when they were new. I guess playing 1-3 complete works without slowdown right before it made 4 look easier in comparison, but I think it's mostly the Wily fortress stages not being as frustrating, the regular stages do look harder than I remember. There's also a little bit of having the charge shot as a good enough weapon from the start instead of having to use the pea shooter until you get something better from a boss.

they don't have enough of a story for play order to matter.

Rockman 2 is a good one to start with

Is there any Rockman game that doesn't have a sick cover art? It's often the international version that decides to fuck things up for no good reason, this is a common thing especially with capcom games overall and I never understood why.
