Anything I should know before starting this?

I beat Zero Mission and Fusion and found them both pretty mediocre as action games and wasn't a fan of shooting and bombing every surface to proceed

Zero Mission and Fusion are much more linear and thus easier. You may enjoy Super Metroid more.

>wasn't a fan of shooting and bombing every surface to proceed
About 2/3 of the way through the game you get a hidden X-Ray Scope item that quickly lets you scan around and see if surfaces are bombable or if there's hidden passages.

if you have no taste for any visual narrative with the gameplay, you're going to basically see alot of the same.

man, i'd hate to be as reductionist as this...

old metroid in general are not focused on action, if you like exploration i think it's pretty good and it's a game you can beat in a few hours

Metroid is NOT an action game. The fun is in collecting and exploring. It's basically side scroller Zelda in space.
Either you appreciate that, or should just give up and go play some run n gun

It's just a series of samey generic rooms with colored blocks. There is nothing to explore or uncover aside from just another generic copypasted missile capacity upgrade.

One of the GOATs of vidya. It's been too long since I played this gem.

The game has a good difficulty curve but its not an unforgiving nigger of a game that doesn't give you save points.

He's right though. It's cool to optimize your route and sequence break but there is no sense of wonder, discovery, or exploration. You pretty much know what's going to be around every corner

the game doesnt hold your hand in terms of exploration especially compared to fusion and zero mission.

This is completely subjective. When I played the game in the 90s I had a ton of fun with the exploration and discovery. Maybe you're just jaded.

What >>11933220 said, just play Mega Man instead. Clearly Metroid is not for you outside of maybe Metroid Dread (not retro) which actually leans into the action and railroads the player.

Super Metroid will not change your mind, it's even less action oriented and progression is even more cryptic and you still bomb/power bomb everything. There is at least the X-Ray scope to minimize this but there's no guarantee you will even find it since it's an optional power up that is completely missable if you don't explore.

Never really got the appeal of Mega Man X. It definitely feels polished and inoffensive, but the level and boss design is just kinda bland and forgettable. The game is also just way too easy with no replay value.

Super Metroid was never really a heavy hitter like Link to the Past was though
Anonymous No.11933739 >>11933747
the post super games don't put much emphasis on action, a lot of it's too easy/trivial, but I struggle to think of any game out there that really replicates what it offers. sidescroller with 8 way shooting that occasionally emphasizes timing instead of just contra firehose spam. I wish that game did exist, super metroid but actually a really tight action game, but I don't think it does.

Fusion, yes, but the former? Discounting abusing obviously unintended exploits, they're each about as flexible. ZM is just a very short game with a dense playable area

Zoomers don't realize how common sense works. If you were born after the 90s or too late in the 90s for SNES/Genesis, you're Gen Z, period. They seem to think it can be anything else because they're too high on prescription pills to think like an actual intelligent creature.

I've seen somewhere in the ballpark of two orders of magnitude more people complaining about zoomers than identifiable zoomers on this board. I only see one side trying to start flame wars, and it's not the zoomer boogeyman. I also suspect you're one of the people who ebin ween new on-topic threads with some approximation of "who the fuck cares, why did you post this" first posts way faster than is normal for this board. Do you sit around all day refreshing the catalog? Because that's the impression I'm getting

I started it tonight... mid so far, just like the other two Metroids. All the Metroid games have a unique sense of exploration/progression and a steady drip feed of upgrades, but that's really about it... combat is just a pointless afterthought, jumping is super floaty (you have to hold jump for like two seconds to make higher jumps), and really only exists to traverse through the map rather than offer any fun or challenging platforming, movement feels jerky with very sudden starts/stops, environments are just a bunch of colored blocks, and I've never been a fan of pixel hunting for destructible tiles, especially when certain tiles are just arbitrarily chosen as destructible with no rhyme or reason.
Anonymous No.11936728 >>11936739

None of those games is "mid" because that's not a word in the language that I speak and that you semi-competently pretend to speak. Instead of farting out more generic complaints, answer the question you were asked.
