There are games that just start right with no long intros and shit. Medieval 1 Total War is another one.

>Just learned about a Gameboy port of Diablo
How the fuck was that supposed to work? Yeah it's only a prototype. But I'm just trying to picture how they would have actually handled it.

The GBA SP had Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. Absolute gem. They've managed to transfer some of the PS2 music, including the voices, and the video below doesn't do it justice compared to when you actually play it on a handheld:

It's the closest thing to Diablo for me, but the item drops aren't random, and the enemies always spawn in fixed places and amounts. Same for the dungeon layouts - always the same. That's how they have managed to save some space on the cartridge while mainting cool visuals across three acts.

Postage stamp sized mono pixelated mess like all gameboy titles that you needed to be in bright light at the right ange to even see. How the fuck did nintendo get away with it. Anyone who says the gamebut was good should be forced to play it and only it for five years or until suicide and burial. It does not hold up.

Diablo 1 was great but the nicest memory is the guitar jingle in the vllage.

Thank goodness you've returned!

Much has changed since you lived here, my friend. All was peaceful until the dark riders came and destroyed our village. Many were cut down where they stood, and those who took up arms were slain or dragged away to become slaves - or worse.

The church at the edge of town has been desecrated and is being used for dark rituals. The screams that echo in the night are inhuman, but some of our townsfolk may yet survive.

Follow the path that lies between my tavern and the blacksmith shop to find the church and save who you can.

diablo 1 was a tile based turn based game, before dropping the turn based but retaining the tile based. it would have done fine control and gameplay wise, although losing all the graphics and atmosphere it probably wouldn't have been successful.

>Players achieve maximum range by equipping range adder 4 polearms and spears, giving them range 5 when attacking size 1 monsters, range 6 when attacking size 2 monsters and range 7 when attacking size 3 monsters.
I don't know if D1 was exactly the same but it's quite interesting how they handled the grid in D2.

I think all melee weapons have 1 range in d1. you're kind of overthinking it though? your range just goes to the edge of their model? so a unit that occupies 3 squares, although they're centered on 5 squares away, you hit them with 3+ range weapons?

you see how CRT monitors work seeing that there is no washed up fullbright whites here as d2 when you boot it nowadays

probably has more to do with the renderer he's using. the game looked the same to me in 2000 and 2020 because I always used the poor people renderer that became the default as the game's lifespan continued and -w became the standard.

Anon, no matter the renderer, this game was made with glide, and glide has fullbrights due to 16bit palette shenanigans, it isnt a direct3d game like nox

idk bro there were 3 video options in the vidtest when you first launched the game.
I never played it with glide. I tried sven's wrapper for a bit when I was into plugy, but I just went back to d2d.
and then d2d was the only option when you ran in windowed mode until the glide wrapper came around years later.
pretty sure you needed an expensive computer to run glide too, and I was just using my dad's expired work hand-me-downs.

I'm not overthinking anything it was a quote from amazonbasin. Here's the sizes for comparison. The way they explain it is monster size gives you a +0/1/2 range modifier. So technically you only need to be able to reach the collision area of a monster instead of the target area.

What I found interesting is that range 1 is this larger area since the grid cells are so small. It gives them more granularity than if the ranges had been simpler like if range 1 was a simple cross or diamond shape. The grid doesn't get in the way of gameplay even if you can feel it's there when you play. A larger cell size would've made the game feel extremely clunky.

I tried going back to Diablo 1 but it's aged so poorly it's hard to get into. Even with the new ports it's still pretty dated.
