You can emulate and collect all you want, if you weren't around back then - you'll just never know what it was like.

You can emulate and collect all you want, you'll never relive your youth and the good times will never come back.

Gen X, Millennials and Zoomers alike... We can't truly go back bros.

Oh fuck, OP, you're right.
I can't ever go back to wasting 10 hours a day on public school and the mandatory busywork they handed out.
I can't ever go back to living according to the whims of shitty parents, who arbitrarily decide what you're allowed to do and when.
I now have to suffer through a world where any piece of media I ever knew about is now freely available to me, in addition to content from around the globe that I never heard of.
A world where I can watch what I want, play what I want, and have any meal I can think of delivered to my front door with no effort at all.

Life sucks, bros...

Notice how only people with terrible parents and childhood don't want to go back. That or tryhard "self improvement" larpers like >>11935303

Every normal human being born post 1950 that had a decent to good childhood, looks back at their youth fondly because it was a simpler time, with more freedom. Other than school, what other responsibilities did one have?

My childhood up until I was 15ish was playing outside or vidya with my family and friends, going to the movies, going to the mall, experiencing all the new tech and significant changes in the world, discovering and exploring places, just enjoying life.

After 15 I got into shitty relationships and teenage love stole a lot of time I should've used with family and friends and I missed the final chunk of my childhood focusing on pussy.
After that, the feeling wasn't the same and I dropped out of college and had to get a wagie job to get by for years.
My life is better now, but besides the first 15 years of my life and maybe the last 2-3, the remaining 15 years were fucking cancer.

You're damn right I'm interested in /vr/ mostly because of nostalgia and wanting to go back.

For me it was getting a modded PS2.
We didn't have good internet back then in my third world hellhole so you had to buy burned games with badly printed covers from the local stores.
So it was similar to the legit way only cheaper and with extra steps.
Now I can download and burn whatever but its not the same.
At least I didn't grow on gacha and live service trash like zoomers so cant complain.

Nothing lasts forever, things change, I got to enjoy the good times, I still engage in all the good things I did back then. Having regrets and longing for better days isn't new, you're not unique for feeling like that, it's human nature.
Learning to live with it and weaving through life without letting it consume you is a burden you have to carry until you pass, make the most out of your time because the end will be the same.

for underground millennials the motto always was FIGHT THE FUTURE

I mean, making a culture out of living in the better past today, or in the most lite terms, consuming media from the past. Every true cinephile will mostly go to pre-70s movies for example. Happened to 80s indie musicians also. Don't even get me started on tango culture in south america.

I was around from the NES onwards and there's a lot of ways to share that with zoomies or aoomies now wether be emulation or collecting. The later is for me the best option. There's something about looking, browsing and touching all that colorful cardboard and plastic before enjoying the games. A little extra that makes the experience complete.

Stop pretending you are an oldfag, you aren't, just because you have some stuff on your collection you just want to show off but you never played the games and will never do.
Emulating and playing the games is great and a fun way to get anything, if you aren't enjoying and want to pretend you relive shit you are a lying piece of zoomie shit and nothing else.
How arcades worked in the past
>you were the frail nerd that gave money to older guy so he won't beat you up.
>you were the older guy escaping from chores and reality playing games.
>you were the drug dealer in the corner selling drugs to anyone in the arcade.
>you were the little slutty girl owner of the toilet that was sucking cocks for pocket change.
That was the common thing on arcades and i doubt someone wants to relive that past.
The console owners well.
>son of rich family that had latest console so got lot of visits from people that took advantage of him.
>lonely guy that didn't had friends so was playing alone on his room with turned off lights to scape reality.
You are fooling yourself if you think someone wants to relive that (until this day people of my age are still afraid of me and won't give me a job because i beat the crap of lot of people when i was a kid at the arcades).

>"Being an adult is awesome"
>"I want to go back to the past"
Why are these mutually exclusive? You think I want to be a child again? Fuck no. I don't want my helicopter mom deciding what I wear, what I eat, how my hair should be cut, and frantically driving around looking for me if I dared wander off from the culdesac only to scream at me later. Yeah, I definitely missed all of that, and the hordes of shitty fairweather friends I had over the years, or the kids who made fun of me in school, or the various dumb cunts I swapped spit with who never amounted to anything... Why the fuck would I miss any of that? Being an adult is awesome.

But does that mean I'm not nostalgic for the things in my troubled adolescence that were actually good? Absolutely not. I don't play old video games and watch old DVDs on a CRT because it takes me back to some amazing time in my life, I do it because A) I enjoy this stuff compared to modern alternatives for various objective reasons, and B) because it reminds of the good things I had in an absolute sea of miserable adolescent experiences.

I'll grant you that dudes who entomb themselves with old Nintendo Power magazines and plushy dolls and toys and all of that shit... yeah, they're mentally ill. For me, I see no harm in saying, "Wow, I really enjoyed playing my N64 on that little buzzy tube TV back in the day... I should do that again", and then proceeding to do it. I'm not trying to avoid adulthood by doing this, I'm just reliving something good from the past. Reliving the past is not a problem, the problem is when you use it as a replacement for the present. The modern world is incredibly cucked and there's plenty I hate about it, but there's also plenty I like it about. I'll continue merging the best of both worlds until I achieve some kind of gnosis.

In all honesty, the "authentic" experience was often kind of shitty, and emulation is a god send.
In PAL regions, the authentic experience is you paid full price for a game that ran slow.
The authentic experience of many old games was being stuck with ridiculous localisation changes, or just bad or less than perfect control schemes.
On top of that, the PC gaming scene has always just laughed in the face of the idea that there even should be an "authentic experience". You want your games to run good, fast, and your way. Not "the right way".

im pretty sure i've been there with all the 4th-6th gen consoles when i was a kid but goddamn, it's only when im a grown man with some disposable income to afford them used is when i'm reminded how much they used to suck sometimes. i don't miss the fucking dualshock analog sticks breaking, i don't miss disks getting scratched to shit and carts not functioning until i have to blow and clean them up, i don't miss having to set them up and fiddling with the AVs with a CRT that weighs like a rock. and i definitely don't miss the nightmarish cable management. but somehow i enjoy playing and collecting the games for older consoles and i don't even mind playing them on an old piece of shit TV. hell, i played Dark Cloud 2 with a fat PS2 on a small CRT and it's somehow more enjoyable than olaying the port on PS4. chalk up half of it on me being a masochist, maybe but nostalgia's one hell of a drug

Its only in the last ten years that most movie and games have become too shit to bother with with very very occasional ok thing and the last five years that civilisation ended. I always liked old arcade games and coomputer games as much as the latest good thing though.

The wy I see it with this digital only, must be connected, you donlt own it, dlc world is that I have all this stuff no body wanted that I really enoy, I must have 5000+ video games, movies, TV series as well as consoles, TVs, cotrollers, computers, light guns, wheels, joysticks etc etc. I have something like 2000 books as well. I got it all for very very little at one point you could buy used games and DVDs by the lb or kg when all the rental stores shut down. For *me* it covers 90% of everything good every produced in games and media and all the literature I want. I even picked up my top 500 albums on CD although music is just about the oly thinng I also keep in digtal format on computers.

>>11941719
Culture in the 90s was dogshit and the economy was not strong, it was breaking. The internet bubble grew and bombed but industry had largely left. Jobs were harder to get in the 90s. By 2000 rent was high, and jobs were scarce.... that didn't happen when y2k rolled in, it was happening in the 90s and if you watch 90s TV... or 80s TV or 70s TV... you noticed... a lot of complaining about cost of things... and even advertisements in the 1950s. Because getting to the anomalous decent economy of 1950s was because the U.S. basically robbed out Europe after the war. People were still dealing with the poverty of the 1920-30s... 1940s gave a manufacturing boost and we used Europe to make money and steal their intel and research... by the 1970s wages and productivity decouple and things are downhill with all the union busting... Economy gets worse and worse each decade until we're back in the normal of the 1920s era oil/rail baron oligarch shit that the U.S. has basically always been, except it's tech ceos now holding all the internet railroads. The short prosperity only happened because the unions had a win in the 1930 and then failed to follow through and we spend the next 100 years ripping that win apart.

I miss this time period not just for games but just for the older world in general. The 1990s and 2000s feel like such different times compared to today that it basically feels like an entirely different world. it’s like we hit the 2008 financial crisis and everything stopped and pivoted and by the mid 2010s we had entered some weird bizarro world alternate future timeline. The optimism and energy of the 2000s in no way felt like what it was leading up to was the world we got post 2012. I have NO idea what the fuck happened. When I think of how much simpler and more calm people seemed in the 2000s from today, it’s almost like hearing about the 1950s and how simple life was back then from the perspective of the 2000s. Shit really seems to have changed THAT much. Socially economically and in just about every other way. But people will argue things are better today because we have Amazon prime uber eats more powerful computers, and whatever other shit. the trade wasn’t a net positive.

The issue, in part, was civilization on a whole began migrating online. It's fine when the internet is just a seperate tool, but when the bulk of your population now lives in a hyperconnected state, without the discipline to use it properly, you get the state of existence we are in now, and corporations fucking love it.
Anonymous No.11943164

Yeah I don’t think we ever needed to have 100% of the population using the internet regularly or a daily basis. Until around like 2007 or 2008 I’m pretty sure like 30% of the population didn’t even have home internet. The charts are out there. I don’t think people were ready for it. If the internet had stayed a thing were you use it for a few hours a day, no social media or at least it not being a thing like today. There were simpler forms like MySpace. It could be different. I’m rambling point is ppl are exposed to too much on a daily basis and I think it negatively affects them. Maybe if data speeds didn’t ramp up so fast so you couldn’t stream a video every minute like today.but the brain rot of society is real.
One of the main examples I use is the gym. I’m 2007-2017 recording yourself with tripods and shit was basically unheard of. You could go there and lock in and just do your thing without being in someone TikTok video. People were pretty open and chill more so than most other places. Now you have a bunch of guys saying they refuse to use public gyms because of women thirst trapping trying to “catch” guys looking in their direction to post online for social media points. so you’re paying membership fees to actively avoid retarded shit like this while you just want to lift weights. All aspects of society got fucked by the mass adoption of the internet imo. same with dating. young dudes say they don’t want to get turned down and made fun of on social media, so they don’t bother flirting or talking to women. Women get upset saying guys don’t approach them. But then post “creeps” on their social media who so flirt with them. Again I’m rambling but now people say gen z doesnt even date and it’s because of things like that. The internet being used by every single person has not been helpful in any way. We just have a more paranoid self conscious depressed society.

Was uncharacteristic for him to ever be negative about stuff.I really don’t understand how people make the case that today is better unless they simply do not want to be around other people or ever leave their home in which case today is probably pretty kino to some people who can order everything and live online.

I remember when I was a kid catching a frog or toad or something outside and not understanding it needed high humidity and lots of water more than a lizard or something, and I put it in a bug catcher box and forgot about it for a day and it died. Still get sad thinking about that toad but I was only in middle school. I caught it before going to church and when I got back forgot about it and my dad found it later asking me about it.

There was certainly a real carefree fun to the 70's and 80's that seemed to fade away in the 90's. You would get up on a summer morning, head off with your friends all day just doing whatever, no tracking device in your pocket or having your parents micromanaging. Even though the world was more dangerous in many ways, it was more laid back.

The change to the environment is the biggest, most awful thing and the saddest thing is that many younger people don't understand because they don't remember how different things used to be. There were toads all over the place here, almost any window well would have several in the summer. When you went on even a short drive in the country you had to clean the car off from all the bug on the windshield. That part now is really fucking creepy.

So for a while anytime I went in the backyard there were praying mantises you could find everywhere if you looked hard enough.

With how tightly everything is regulated now I wonder if you can even still buy stuff like that? I’m pretty sure he just bought it from Home Depot or some kind of store like ace hardware or whatever from the gardening section. always thought praying mantises were super sick and loved them. Youll probably still be posting here in another decade if the site lasts that long. Either way the way the internet has changed this is basically one of the best websites you can go to. What’s the alternative? if anything I would make fun of people who are still using twitter after 20 years which I would argue is even worse for you.

NTA btw but I only started coming here regularly afound 2007 or so, and only came here a few times before that with my friends. back then the internet in general was a lot more easy going fun and light hearted and there were many other fun places to be than here. Today things have changed so much that this is more or less the only place I go regularly. (And even still I will sometimes go weeks or months without coming here) I appreciate the fact that I can read peoples unfiltered opinions here and I can share mine. it’s a good place to learn or teach other people about whatever it is youre interested in. Reddit is fundamentally flawed in a variety of ways like if someone disagrees with your opinion they can scroll through your page and look for some kind of gotchya or whatever because you said this or posted that half a decade ago. Or the fact that even if you are right you can still get downvoted if your thoughts go against popular thought, and the same opinion you have will get a high amount of upvotes posted in a different subreddit which isn’t as biased. I’m rambling I just enjoy the simplicity here it’s the best system.

I understand what you’re saying and I’ve considered this as well but the same stuff happens everywhere else. When some bullshit idea seems like it’s getting major traction on some other website like twitter or Reddit or tumblr or fb or whatever I think it starts with a bunch of people pushing some narrative super hard until people start climbing on a bandwagon and then those people start spreading it until it becomes “new thing” and from there a bunch of NPCs just agree with it because it’s the new established talking point. there is a ton of shit people have gotten super weird about over the last decade or decade and a half that I think all started because some weirdos on tumblr pushed some crap super hard in an echo chamber until it got traction and from there it spread to sites like twitter reddit fb etc and became shit that no one would shut the fuck up about for years

There is a general pattern I’ve seen where a lot of people reposting or climbing on a bandwagon don’t bother doing it until a “thing” has been slowly gaining traction for years that came out of nowhere. I’m speaking vaguely of course because it’s happened with lots of stuff and it’s the dynamic of it that’s interesting to talk about and not a specific incident since its the mechanism or pattern behind it that’s interesting or weird to me. Something is a weirdo talking point or some chronically online opinion for a year or two and five years later everyone is supporting it

Yeah I saw my first opossum when I was 25 or so. It scared the shit out of me at first cause I'd never seen something that looked like a rat the size of a raccoon with a weird bald face. At first it was just the odd one you might see, now they're about as common as raccoons and skunks. Our winters have gotten consistently milder and milder which is why they can survive now.

Which is another thing that sucks, it used to be pretty much consistently cold from December to early March with snow persisting pretty much the whole time and we'd make ice rinks in our backyards and that's pretty much a thing of the past. Sometimes there's a cold snap for a week or two, but generally winters are more green than white now.

It's not that wiping bugs off the windshield wasn't gross, it's that globally there are about 50% less off all insects and a lot of other life that was supported by them like the toads, salamanders, lizards etc than there were when I was growing up.

It's fucking creepy. It's like Thanos wiping out half of all life, but he just wiped out half of all non-human life meanwhile the human population literally doubled. Except it's not a comic book sorty, it's something I've seen unfold before my eyes.

Ancient music is much more poorly preserved than ancient texts, and even the latter are fragmentary at times. There are notable exceptions of course, but for the most part, all we know is that it influenced polyphonic Church music, which in turn influenced Classical.
Anyway, as I was saying, we are much better armed against the sands of time than they were. Ancient sources are mostly transmitted to us via scribes and Christian monks, and we have much more powerful information technology than copying by hand. Even if modern society collapses, modern tech won't vanish, and we might even keep a more rudimentary internet going.

Adulthood has its drawbacks, but I feel a lot of people who long for the past to this extent gave up on life as soon as it began such as longing for their friends, family, good video games, and other things that you CAN partake in as an adult, but forgot how to.

Tinkering, hard copies, redundancy, etc will all help with preservation. As long as there's computers & internet in some form, we can easily keep retro alive, especially since the older gens can fit within a handful of gigs.

This. I use tinkering for all my preservation needs. Hard drives, boiled eggs, used cucumbers. I just toss them in a jar with a bit of tinkering and they're good for decades.

The data will last as long as people are interested in it. It's pretty easy to find data preserved from 40 years ago.

You know what I meant -- dumping roms, creating new cartridges, that sort of thing. As long as we keep reproducing this stuff, we can stay one step ahead of entropy. Because ultimately, that's what all life does.

>pretend "bros" post to drag other people into your gravity well of misery and parasocialness
you've summed it up well

literally anything from childhood can be nostalgic, and if you want to get philosophic, we cannot go back into the past, nostalgia is delusional microdepression resulting from the inability to enjoy the present and refusal to imagine better things in the future kys OP

Zoomers have nothing. They never understand gaming. Most they can do is run around like a retard in GTA and scream into the mic on CoD. They never had anything to go back to.

Everybody and their mother is online now, especially people who you wouldn't be exposed in real life. Everything is possibly recorded, everything is content.
