It's a game that just "is". An in-between of FF6's step up in drama but FF8's melodrama, a world that is nature vs. greedy exploitation, and has so many weird little things to discover, minigames that make no sense, a variety of things all strewn about that don't feel out of place besides stuff like the Korean BBQ by name. By having the chibis you have to imagine more of the context even with their enhanced pantomiming over old 2D sprites, but at the same time there's enough detail to create a world that felt more alive at the time. And all the while, it doesn't get super up its own ass about how mechanics and systems and stuff works, you don't really need to know much more than "the lifestream does it".
Combine that with a coming turn of the century in workstation rendering for the pre-renders, where environments are caught in the early 3D style and appeal but aren't super "planned out" like the sequels, and it also produces something of a strange visual of a world similar to and yet vastly different from our own, helping make it even more distinct.

Look at all the decked out top of the line gear and equipment in just one picture. They were absolutely dripped out of their minds, flossing and dabbing on everyone to the point God himself asked them for advice on putting together his setup. Nowadays you have dudes with basic computers and screens and that's it, or they have some gimmick shit that these dudes would never touch. Even the penholder just barely in frame is clearly top-tier for knowing where your shit is and being at the perfect angle to grab it with ease. These guys knew wtf they were doing, of course they made kino.

90s Squaresoft was on a whole different level from everyone else. Look at their output, shit was just gold after gold, yearly releases.

I first played it as an adult and I still got immersed in its world, one of the few games capable of that. It's crazy how good it is.

And to point out one amazing thing about it: the amount of varied, memorable scenes you experience throughout the story. There's a little bit of.. everything, really.
