26yo here (is that considered zoomer? no idea), I can't enjoy Sonic because I don't understand if I should speed through the levels or go slow.
Or rather, I know I'm supposed to go fast and all (it's Sonic after all) but I have skill issues so I end up going slow, and then it feels wrong, like I'm not playing the way you're supposed to and it bums me out

Probably none of them. Maybe a tendie game like LttP, but even that may be a stretch. I bet a lot of zoomers would play that game and get filtered because "there aren't any waypoints". There are waypoints but they are "hidden" on the map screen. The game doesn't have a tutorial that spells out that there is a map screen with waypoints, and a significant percentage of zoomers would never figure it out because they aren't curious people.

Platformers (Mario is the obvious one, but every system has at least ten good platformers you can choose from).

I wouldn't recommend SNES/Genesis to a zoomer at all. Play simple arcade games on NES, Doom and get good with platforming stuff only then you can switch to 16-bit gaming

But ultimately, if you want a zoomer to enjoy an old game, make an e-celeb they have a parasocial relationship with play it first. They're gonna have tons of fun speedrunning Super Metroid or whatever if a random vtuber starts doing it, or if they make it sound like it's the new "in" thing for streamers to do.

I don't think anyone, zoomer or boomer, nerd or jock, is going to give a shit about playing Madden 93 in 2025.

There is a reason you see shitloads of copies of old sports games in retro stores that are priced at a dollar and still never move. I have only bought a couple on Genesis because they were cheaper than buying replacement cartridge shells (and even then, the EA ones would be useless for this since they used their own custom design)
