Holy shit for a NES game the world map feels huge, in comparison Mother 2 didn't feel anything special compared to the other jrpgs of the time and Mother 3's world is small as fuck even compared to Earthbound.
But Mother 1? Probably has the biggest world in the NES

In terms of world/overworld map, that's probably the case yes. I can't think of any that's technically bigger. With that said it's big only because of the more realistic scale compared to the traditional Ultima/DQ overworld; as far as in game lore is concerned those actually cover more ground

Assuming each of the red squares is one screen, that would be 8192*6240 which yeah is pretty fucking big but probably still smaller than Mother (it's a bit hard to tell because Mother's overworld is not square)

It's one of the reasons why Mother 1 is my favorite of the trilogy. The world is genuinely immersive and fun to explore. Im pretty sure its a bigger map than Earthbound, if it isn't then its all the connecting tunnels and areas you can only get to via teleportation that make Earthbound feel smaller. Theres a lot of cool completely optional areas too and as far as I remember there aren't any in the other games.

The difference is that DQ and other RPGs have an overworld map and submaps for towns, and the overworld map is scaled to be smaller than the town maps. Mother is just one big ass map without submaps for town.

90% of the map is empty space with nothing to find. I remember the north part of the map with the desert there was basically nothing there.

The world map is one of the worst parts of the game imo. Usually in an RPG map, exploring the nooks and crannies will let you find various items and secrets. In MOTHER, the whole map is just empty. There's all these winding cliffs, and exploring them is a complete waste of time. Exploring for exploration's sake isn't even exciting. Within each area, everything looks exactly the same.

The map is too big for its own good. Being large wouldn't be the biggest problem on its own, but coupled with the game's egregious random encounter rate, it makes getting anywhere take forever. Needing to go to a neighboring town before you get teleport isn't "oh, let me stop by there real quick," its "God fucking damn it there goes twenty minutes." At least Pollyanna is a good track... is what I would say if it didn't get interrupted by encounters every two steps.
