Why did it have to be so sad, though?

The DX version on a GBA consolizer is the definitive way to play this. Almost emulation quality.

ive never seen anyone articulate "why" links awakening is so good, other than "mario enemies" and "it was all a dream"

It's a 11/10 for top-down isometric action RPG gameplay. That in and of itself is enough.

combat is way more complex than Alttp, like you can use the shield same way you use it in a 3d game. You also have the feather allowing you to jump, and other neat things like... oh wait, no that's about it.

This is THE quintessential Zelda game. It takes the best parts of 1 and the sequel and puts them in a fun package that's not annoying at all

>This is THE quintessential Zelda game
I would agree, but Seasons actually beats it at that and has better combat and overall balance. Like, Eagle Tower is great, but the Sword and Shield dungeon is peak, and season swapping is one of the strongest environment changing mechanics in the series. LA has better story and atmosphere, but is otherwise beaten.

The Oracles games are the technocrats Zeldas, they're technically good and but they're ultimately soulless, bloated and feel like "paint by numbers Zelda". Just the way NPCs are like WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS just to say nothing is something a real Zelda game would have never done.

i didn't know there was mario enemies in this. must be good.

outside of some cute set pieces like marin and the chain chomp bro I fail to see how anyone would take LA over either oracle game. considering those have better visuals, more secrets, better and unique gameplay, better dungeons, better puzzles...
