They're both too simple and archaic to go back to nowadays. Gaming didn't really start until the PSX, and even that's being charitable.

Very true.
I really loved playing SOTN so I tried out the SNES game Super Castlevania 4 or whatever... it's just too hard for me, and it's boring because all you do is combat. Where's the exploration? It's basically a one-hour long arcade quarter-muncher, fucking dogshit.

It's really strange how people here think that the PS1 is like some kind of turning point of sophisticated gameplay, when in actuality the overwhelming majority of PS1 are nothing mechanically mindblowing or deep, including all of the system's most famous games. We're talking about a console that had a nerfed version of Theme Park, a 1994 computer game.

Oh, sorry, is playing a nerfed version of a game from the launch year of your console supposed to be a good thing? Because I wouldn't exactly call it that. All of the extremely CPU and memory intensive games were on computer. PS1 had nothing like Age of Empires, it had very simple games for its entire lifespan.

I thought it was the NES that was the turning point? Can't wait for this board's next rule change when PS3 games will be the new turning point.

The NES was nothing compared to the 8 and 16 bit computers

Atari 800/600
Vic 20/Commodore 64
Atari ST /Amiga
Spectrum 48 and 128K
Acorn BBC and Archimedes
TRS80 and TI994A
Apple IIe
268 PC
8088 PC
If you really think that the NES was more important to gaming than the 8 and 16 bit computers you really know fuck all. How the fuck do you even think software was even developed for it? Stop with the nintendo bullshit, it's just tedious nonsense. It was not ecen groundbreaking in for,, the 2600 was the design that brought the TV RF connection, the cartridge rom etc. Seriously un fuck your brain from the tendie slop posting. Even when the NES was around arcade machines were way more influential, it was just a port box

OP Can you explain to be why Zork or colossal cave or Pong are not games?

What do you mean, most 2.5d games play similarly to B tier 16 bit games and its not like modern stuff like Uncharted or The Last of Us are that much different to Terminator 2 on snes and genesis. Most modern games are just to walk to a thing, press a button for a thing to happen, they are basically Prince of Persia.

>>11939713
I often find later Snes and Gen games too modern, long unstoppable intros and boring cutscenes interfering with the gameplay. I was playing this game called Metal Warriors on Snes and thinking how while the graphics are amazing that the intro and transitions would be so much quicker if it was on nes, it would probably also start out with hardcore action.

SM's combat and platforming are shit.
It took SOTN's superior gameplay to make that genre relevant, which is why today they're called Metroidvanias instead of simply Metroidlikes/Metroidclones.

The only resident expert in video games on this entire website here and indeed the internet, objectively. The objectivity of this claim is done through peer review, but due to me being peerless I can only ask myself and I agree with my statement.

This is not a video game as no digital computing is being done which, as we all know, is a requirement for video games.

Now let's give Mr. Anon the benefit of doubt and assume he meant gaming. We'll ignore playing as gaming as it's not reasonable defined, but even the lesser experts that are below me agree that play is gaming. The earliest conclusive gaming implements my minions have found are dated as ~5000 years old. I'd say that predates Tennis For Two by some years and we can thus conclude that gaming started ~5000 years ago in the narrowed definition.

You could say that video came up short. I hope you reconsider your choice of video, preferably something at least 4 hours long.

I think emulation hurts 4th gen because it's a refined generation that's mostly about following the leading sellers and tweeking it. You'll find a depth of beat em ups in 4th gen, if you have every game at your disposal it's hard to stick with any game and there isn't a ton of variety compared to 3rd/5th gen. That said who the fuck can really say it's hard to go back to? Just play the shit you like
