It was just too intelligent of a game for the average person.
People were confused by the tiered attacks.
People were confused by the accents that characters have.
People were confused that none of the 40+ party members were important to the main plot.

Oh boy, this again.
It was never once broadly considered a masterpiece. Everything but the music and backgrounds were executed poorly. It's a 4/10 at best and I really like Square RPGs and weird esoteric japanese plots. I bought it both when it released and when the remaster came out, awful both times. I'm sorry, I wanted to like it too.

Right when it came out
I knew it was shit the moment I realized it doesn't matter if you "save" kidd or not.
I then knew it was shit when I realized din this game you are exploring two worlds that look exactly the same rather than 7 worlds that look distinctly different and beautiful.
I then realized it's shit when I realized they completely shoehorned the chrono trigger ties at the last second in the stupidest manner possible when they realized nobody would buy this shit game otherwise.
I then realized the game is shit when I learned the entire purpose of this game is to save schala in a completely useless timeline and they got her hair color wrong because again, they shoehorned the tie in at the last second terribly and with no understanding or respect to the original IP. (In before schala dyed her hair)

Best soundtrack in gaming history as arguably though.

It was graphically impressive, but the story was lackluster and the characters were lame. Couple in that you turn into a furfag early in the game made it even less appealing.

It didn't help that random encounters just took forever to complete because of all the camera swinging and cinematics, similar to ff9.

>It was just too intelligent of a game for the average person.
It was a midwit game trying to be intelligent.
>People were confused by the tiered attacks.
Nobody was confused except you it seems. The tiered attack were stupid because you could easily just do the 1-2 combo and never have to think about it again. Add vigora and then just spam 3's and it gets even worse.
>People were confused that none of the 40+ party members were important to the main plot.
There is a difference between not being important to the plot and finding random flowers as party members. In suikoden you could get away with it because they had a purpose.

it's needlessly complicated but most complexities can be safely ignored because the game is so easy. there are only two or three bosses in the game that are remotely challenging and the regular encounters are a joke.

>In suikoden you could get away with it because they had a purpose.

Suikoden characters are also nicer to look at than the 3D-Zelda-game-worthy monsters of Chrono Cross, and far fewer of them are random walking jokes or cartoon characters who appear to have come from another dimension.

It so funny that Kato had no concept of what alternative world meant. It doesn't mean Hitler is not a vegetarian, it means there might not be any Hitler.
>I then realized it's shit when I realized they completely shoehorned the chrono trigger ties at the last second in the stupidest manner possible when they realized nobody would buy this shit game otherwise.
They didn't shoehorn anything. The entire plot relies on trigger. The problem is Kato made the pacign so bad that 90% of the plot is on the second disc. So it seems shoehorned, but not really.
Lavos absorbed the magical power from schala, thus her hair color changed. This is consistent with his writing in trigger.

>- failed to finish cross while pising on the original game
He did neither of those things. Cross has an amazing bittersweet ending and more Ng+ content than Trigger, and why would he "pis" on trigger when supposedly inflated his involvement in it? You contradict yourself.

They couldn't finish int iem because somebody wrote most of the stuff for a 3disc game while being told it was handled by a new team and that the game won't have 3 discs.
>it's a text based rpg, not a visual novel
It is a visual novel, there are no rpg elements. The best you can say it has cyoa elements with specific choices.
>He did neither of those things
So cross is a perfectly finished game that wasn't rushed? Jesus, cross fanboys are delusional.
>Cross has an amazing bittersweet ending
Ah yes, the very generic fade to black and randon modern Jap footage is amazing. Truly a work of art.
>more Ng+ content than Trigger
Wow, one extra boss battle is something really amazing.
>and why would he "pis" on trigger when supposedly inflated his involvement in it?
Because he wanted to shill Chrono Cross as its own thing and barely connected to trigger for marketing purposes. Even he knew what a shitshow the game was compared to trigger.

cross was considered great upon release except for a seething contingent of trigger tards who didnt like that it wasnt the same game. they have since taken over the narrative. simple fact is that cross has amazing setting, visuals, music and set pieces which is 80% of what actually matters for making a good jrpg. the gameplay and story is flawed but good luck finding a jrpg with perfect gameplay and plot. Youd have to be an absolutely soulless retard (aka most of this board) not to enjoy something that looks and sounds as good as chrono cross, literally the best on the entire console. yes the plot was executed poorly but its hardly game breaking.

Chrono Trigger's combat was getting somewhere with moving enemies, area effect attacks and combined attackd. Chrono Cross dumped it and took the "action points" mechanic from tabletop games, bolted it on to the bog-standard wizardry combat, and threw in a color matching minigame for magic. Typical jarpig example of throwing shit in to make the game different without caring if it's actually fun, treating the combat like padding between story segments.

I always found it to be lacking compared to Chrono Trigger because its practically a completely different story with different characters. A large appeal of JRPGs being if you enjoy the characters or not. CT characters were too good so they overshadowed the cast of CC. Most characters in CC felt way too 1 dimensional and pointless even. Game would have been far better off had it concentrated on fewer characters with much stronger character to each of them.

Very quickly, within a couple years as vesselswines went from the zenith of the console industry to a quasi-embarrassment.

Cross was the crescendo for Square in the west; superlative presentation, novel for jrpg battle system, challenging yet accessible plot. It was reviewer catnip and they were more than happy gush over it as a thank you to Square for carrying the best console of that generation over the top. The next year Square released The Spirits Within and biker bar Meg Ryan corridor runner. They never recovered and it retroactively poisoned the reputation of their 5th gen titles.

During the reevaluation/nostalgia period 15-20 years later it became apparent that Cross wouldn't even crack the top 5 JRPGs of the generation let alone be one of the goats.
