The overwhelming majority of the time arcades were peaceful happy places literally full of smiling people who were talkative even.
However, on extremely rare occassions, I've dodged/experienced:
>a sucker punch/attack
>an angry gentleman (lol) beating a game to death (gave me a funny look, I walked away)
>and possibly played Polybius
>a guy subtly threatening me with real violence if I didn't stop cornering him in SF II

The usual "tough" in an arcade usually just kicked a game and never talked to anyone. Ooh scary.

I never saw a fight or even an argument but I know they've happened. More in that below.
I've personally witnessed many a drug deal, though. I don't think any were crack. Definitely weed. Possibly pills. Nothing else.
In the 90s, that sorta stuff died down at wypipo arcades but continued at ones more populated by black kids and I know of two in black areas that were shutdown for being nuisance businesses due to shootings. The last one I know of was a black kid arcade and it shut down in 2003-ish? Maybe later. I have pics of some friends playing games in it from back then.

arcade can mean a lot of things really. pizza place, bowling alley, bar, etc. im 40 and i never saw a place that was just an arcade really. aside from the big ones at six flags or something. so i think a lot of people use "arcade" to mean some type of possibly seedy hangout where they also had arcade games

Delinquents did hang out in arcades if it wasn't a great area for such people to be around. They weren't total hellholes by default but yeah, druggie teens and assholes would be there.

Arcades weren't Chuck E Cheese, they were full of teens and young adults, if you don't remember them this is lost on you because your concept of an arcade involves a cartoon mouse, or prize booths/go kart racing

I guess today, the only thing I can really think of as an equivalent is just like, local bowling alleys at night in a trashy area where there's more adults than kids, or if you live in a rural area wherever people drive four wheelers to

there was only one "true" arcade, aka not a dinner place or place for parents to take kids, left in my town when i was in my 20s in the late 00s and yeah they had nothing but a huge arcade cabinet section, and a side area with a bar and pool tables, and there were ashtrays all around near the machines. they had every classic cabinet up to that point you could want as well as some more recently released fighter games from the decade, but it obviously was not a place for children. everything else is like as you said, chuck e. cheese and dave and busters, which aren't arcades they just have arcades, they're family entertainment/dining places.

To be exact, besides the original meaning of repeating columns in Roman times and before, it's an "arcade" if there's rows of games, that way it ever so slightly figuratively resembles an arc, then it's an arcade.

Also gang territory with shoes on wires - Nike's Crips , converse Crips , volleys blood etc

So they beat your ass and tossed your shoes, if they didn't kill you. That's what the shoes were on the power lines.

Never had any problem with arcades, except for cheap owners who didn’t maintain their machines and would reboot a cabinet if you were too good at a game (OutRun in my case).
Some people were, let’s say, a little too into the game to accept losing (mostly fighting games).
Instead, I’ll share with you a good story that happened to me.

>wandering around arcade looking for something to play
>there’s a small room behind a curtain
>+18 area with sexy/erotic games
>at the entrance there’s a game that looks absolutely amazing (Dead Connection)
>try to get a closer look
>feel a hand grabbing my shoulder
>”what are you looking at, this is not for kids!”
>freeze, scared AF
>it’s one of the guys I always see at the arcade, usually smoking and talking to the owner and his friends
>try to explain I just wanted to see the game at the entrance
>be turbo autistic, can’t speak clearly
>he goes to the counter
>grabs a bunch of change
>pulls the curtain open and puts it on the +18 section
>sits at the cabinet I was looking at
>”come on, the game is fun”
>tells me to take 2P side
>we play for like half an hour
>every time I was out of credits, he fills the machine again
>I’m so happy, he just smokes, listens to me ramble
>puts the curtain back afterwards
>goes back to his friends like nothing happened
>from then on I always salute him when I see him
>he always nods or does a little hand sign back

Today I have those games, Dead Connection PCB (and Girls panic trilogy cause I was lying, I was indeed looking at the ero games too)
