Posting that image muddies the issue needlessly. I have never played a single ZX Spectrum game and I love Nintendo, including a number of Game Boy games, but I have always, since the Game Boy was new, thought that its graphics hardware sucked, and I have always, since I first saw Spectrum screenshots online, thought that its graphics hardware was cool. The rainbow coloration on black with oddly limited color mingling was strange but pretty. It isn't perfect but it looks better than the Game Boy does.

None of this has much to do with the quality of the actual games.

There's a lot more polish on the graphics for the NES version, but the Spectrum does have an odd charm to it with its purer color palette and seemingly more detailed graphics.

Are there any universal Speccy emulators that specialize in gaming for the system?

I could care less about emulating its computer package suite, I'm juts interested in the games for it. Preferably an emulator that does whatever is needed after mounting the rom/tape to launch it automatically.

That kind of reinforces my point because I was actually trying to defend the Game Boy. Super Mario Land is a piss poor example to use if you want to showcase its capabilities.
Of course, this is an unfair comparison too because it looks like you picked the shittiest looking ZX Spectrum game you could find, and there are naturally plenty of them since it was an early 80s home computer. I don't consider myself a big Speccy enthusiast, and I'm not even a bong, but I know that system can do a lot better.
I'd like to see a fair side by side comparison, because I feel like the two systems could trade blows.
Anonymous No.11942896 >>11942921 >>11943069
>>11942876
Oh absolutely, I can easily bring up a fairer side-by-side comparison of what each system is capable of. Stunt Car Racer and Race Drivin' are great examples of polygonal limit-pushers for each respective system. (I was tempted to give a shoutout to the Speccy port of Power Drift, but I thought drawing 3D would be a better stress test.)

That's more like it. Someone should do a video on this.
What makes this even more interesting is that besides using a similar CPU to the Game Boy, the Speccy had a lot of games that were essentially monochrome to get around the attribute clash that was common with color graphics.

GBC is effectively the same piece of hardware. If we're going to include Speccy with ram expansion as the same computer, then yes, GBC is the gameboy.
So, what looks better than Shantae or Pokemon G/S on spectrum?
Anonymous No.11942969
>>11942958
If we were to include homebrew? I'd say Castlevania: Spectral Interlude looks the best for a spectrum game. However, it looking "better" than Shantae or Pokemon G/S is a highly subjective matter.
Anonymous No.11942973

I think part of the reason the demoscene flourished more in PAL land is because 50hz is a lower target than 60hz, so it's easier to pull off impressive graphical effects on European NESs and C64s. Interestingly, the PAL versions of these systems both have CPUs clocked slightly lower than their NTSC versions.

speccy looks likes shit compared to gameboy games. I would much rather have a consistent four color palette of green or black and white (in the case of the gameboy pocket) over rainbow vomit. Also sprites were often better designed on the gameboy anyway.
This is like those "thing japan" memes that don't consider the fact that cities are genuinely better planned and designed in Japan than America what with America having shit or no public transportation, "one more lane" that always gets cogested, having to own a car to get to somewhere that any other developed country you could just walk to in five minutes or less, no skyscrapers or high rise buildings just trashed out strip malls and convenience stores with gigantic parking lots and law enforcement too pussy or castrated to do their job.
