SA is a game I like, that more or less does suck.
It's not a well put together game. Sonic's gameplay is more or less fun, but it's ten levels of awkward, and never feels like it plays as smoothly as it should.
The other characters are just tacked on and range from fine to not fun at all.
The intersecting stories gimmick doesn't even work, because they change how scenes play out, depending on who you play as.
The best thing you can say about it is it has soulful Dreamcast aesthetics, and the soundtrack is great.

I just did. It's incredibly shakily put together, and the controls for Sonic don't really work. If you watch anyone play this game for the first time, they'll run straight into a wall. Not great controls for a platformer.

I think that SA 1 and 2 are both fun games but the physics is indeed atrocious especially for a sonic game. The whole brand is built around tight snappy physics. This kind of stuff isn't even hard to program if you are paying attention, it really shows a lack of care at an engine level.
Big picture though they are nice games just weird how they couldn't hire ONE guy who took high school physics to come in and polish it up

Yeah that's basic acceleration. iirc there's a tiny amount of it but the velocity feels mostly constant (correct me if I'm wrong)

The thing about the webm I replied to is that an upward collision is simply halting the upward velocity from moving the player rather than setting it to zero as it should.

Both games are rife with similar errors that make the game feel floaty, clunky and cheap

All the mods is stupid, their goal is to literally turn it into the Dreamcast version. The Steam version lacks some things from Dreamcast, but also makes some enhancements. Rather than adding back the things that were lost from Dreamcast but keeping the enhancements they basically try to turn it into an emulated Dreamcast version unless you manually do the mods one by one yourself.

you only think that because you weren't alive for it. back then every new generation was a massive leap in technology. the only logical way forward was making the most impressive eye-popping graphics possible. that sequence with the orca destroying the pier behind sonic was flooring, mindblowing. a couple short years before that, there was only shitty blocky spiky 3D.

what does this even mean? they were transitioning to a world with a whole new additional dimension. there's no easy way to translate pixel art from the 16 bit era to the early sloppy primitive 3D landscape. it also doesn't help that many of sega's devs didn't know 3D. also i don't even know what you mean by "cartoony". the sonic genesis games were bright and vibrant and really pushed the color capabilities of the console, but i wouldn't call them cartoony. toejam and earl is cartoony. risstar is cartoony.

sonic heroes is not all that different visually from the adventure games. take away the 3 character bullshit and it's basically adventure 3.it's also an inbetween between them and the modern boost era games.
