4>3>1>2 for me. 4's just the strongest game in terms of everything, like name any aspect of King's Field and it's just at its best in 4. One of my favorite PS2 games and one of my absolute favorites period. Okay the final boss kinda sucks compared to even the first game and the turning speed is very slow but that's about it, everything else is top notch

4 has some really fucked up design decisions. Getting a weapon to level 3 to use sword magic is way too grindy, and the opportunity to make it not so grindy with blacksmith upgrades is instead wasted on pointless +1 damage increases. Magic is super limited unless you equip one specific ring which QUINTUPLES your MP for no real downside, even though the description sounds like it's a significant tradeoff. The maps are barely readable and pretty much useless for actual navigation until you get the 3D magic map. Heavier weapons are comically disadvantaged compared to smaller ones, both swing speed and recovery times are so bad that they're nearly useless. The final boss sucks ass too. Good level design and obviously the best production values but I think 2 is better designed overall. Haven't really started on 3 yet to comment on it but reaching floor 4 has just killed any chance that 1 had of being better than 2 in my eyes.

I played and beat kf1jp but got filtered by its sequel kf2jp or kf1us. Got lost around the ant cave and couldn’t figure out where to go and lost interest in the game. I remember making some maps so I put some effort into the game. I think it’s an inherently flawed game because you should simultaneously have
>slow movement speed
>large interconnected world with backtracking and maze like areas

It just makes it too tedious to figure out where to go. I don’t mind slow movement and I don’t mind some mazes and I don’t mind the game being semi open world but if you at some point don’t know where to go you essentially get punished by the game playing it just walking trying to explore and figure out what the fuck to do. While the graphics of the sequel were much better and the core gameplay was good in the sequel the better experience imo was the original game. If you got lost in the original game you more or less knew whatever the solution was, was on the floor you were on. So you didn’t waste your time going to distant areas fucking around for no effect.

How was I supposed to knoooooooow (that the bow could kill the giant ant) maybe I will go back and try it again at some point. I don’t think it was a good idea for them to have the avoidable giant squid at the start because that was probably why I just gave up and started looking for an alternate route.

>>11945386
So how far into the game was I when I encountered the giant ant? I feel like I wasn’t very far into the game which was also probably why I thought it could be bypassed. I thought I could return with stronger gear to kill it.

>>11945401
The reason I had made the map I think was to keep track of which areas I had 100% explored because I was convinced there was something I was missing and there was a hidden secret or something I was missing. It’s easier on paper to just cross areas out you have swept and that’s different than you having walked through them briefly. just because you have been to that area of the map doesnt mean you inspected everything closely.
>>11945438
In retrospect I’m surprised I didn’t use the bow to kill the ant. I’m sure I would have tried so maybe I ran out of arrows or something? or maybe I forgot I had it. No clue. What is it about giant ants in games soft locking you? I remember when I played fallout 3 and left the vault I first went to that city that was populated with giant fire breathing ants and I had no armor and was leveled for melee attacks and got rekt.

>How was I supposed to knoooooooow (that the bow could kill the giant ant)
For me, NPCs implied a kid had a key, was in termite cave, I had nowhere better to go, and the text recommended a bow (which I forgot even existed)

After killing the boss I got stuck in an underground cave and didn't know about the savepoint warp so I had to redo the whole thing.

It goes back further even than that. Japan didn't get BECMI or Sword World or even LOTR til the late 1980s, so a lot of their vision of Western fantasy was informed by texts like Jorge Luis Borges "Book of Imaginary Beings" and movies like Star Wars (Japan had the biggest box office return for that film outside of the US, it was huge).
